Absolutely cannot wait :D Looks stunning, and it's in good hands with Christian Whitehead and co.

It's basically the Mega Man 9 the series has needed for ages.

Now we only need the game in high quality (I'm NOT a fan of the "low res" look).

Opposite of me, to be honest. Visually this is exactly 100% what I want Sonic to look like. It's classic low res sprites, but not held back in the way of many 'retro' style indie games. This is full on, wonderfully animated, beautifully coloured and expertly pixelled sprite and tile work that is perfect for the 2D Sonic formula.

I literally couldn't be happier with the visuals. Much, much rather this than graphics like Mighty No 9, the Rocket Knight sequel or Sonic 4.

Ok this is a Sonic game I can get behind. Count me in. I love that they didn't use the ugly Sonic 4 graphics.

Yeah I much prefer this style over the Sonic 4 look but at the same time I'm disappointed to see that they didn't do something to retain the art style but make the game look less like something made in the 90s.

Couldn't they have put a little bit more into the graphics to make it stand out from any other fan project/hack?

Absolutely. The chances with an overhaul are that its going to feel and look completely off like Sonic 4 did.

Now I did like how Sonic 2 Fan Remix looked, but it might've been too bloated and also felt a bit off. Still, nothing captures the Genesis feeling better than the style they went with for Mania.

...but the game looks fantastic.

Do you honestly want something that looks like sonic 4?

I'd love for it to be high res pixelart.

On a low resolution CRT screen it probably will look great (or a HD-CRT), on a 1080p+ pixel based display it will IMO look "bad".

Personally, I don't want that at all. Not right now.

1. The original graphics are appealing to me as an old schooler, but more than that, they communicate to me that the physics and gameplay are intact to the originals. In that sense it does the exact thing that Mega Man 9 did. I look at it and instantly know everything about the intention of that game. It aims to give me a classic experience that plays as the originals did.

2. Modernized redrawing of classic artwork can work in a classic game revival, but it almost never does. The gaming landscape is littered with HD Sprite redraws and 2.5D reimaginings of classic games, and they're almost uniformly terrible. It's not that they couldn't possibly nail it, but it'd be the exemption to what 20 years of 8/16-bit updates have tended to deliver. We have examples of what happen when they try: Sonic 4. Street Fighter II HD Remix. New Super Mario Bros. At best, it's serviceable. I'm certainly NOT hoping for another effort like those.

It's not a rule for me. I'd be open to seeing an HD update try. But to immediately lament that this is classic style and not an update? You're not in the same world as me for hoping that. I'm actually grateful that for once, they didn't bother with their shitty graphical "update". That's the norm for revivals like this actually, and they're usually awful.

What happened with Dimps? Up until Sonic Rush Adventure (2007), their Sonic was output was solid. Other games too. Then everything except for Colors DS was pretty bad, including non-Sonic stuff until like the okay Xenoverse.

NSMB is far more than serviceable, the others, sure.

Yeah, I kind of agree. I loved the look of the original Genesis games just fine, but like you said, with the new animations and such, it does feel like a rom hack almost.

240p pixel-art goodness for ever.

Now if SNK could release a new KOF in the old Neo-Geo style, that would be perfect. Time to revive those old sprites !

Let's go with just "serviceable". That series is not generally regarded as a looker (outside of the underused Van Gogh Starry Night aesthetic in that Wii U level)

I think they're trying to evoke the 32-bit Sonic game that never was. Judging by the Knuckles Chaotix colour palette and additional animation frames.

Not to defend the NSMB aesthetic per se, but NSMBW (with a good, scalable T.V.) and NSMBU are actually quite decent looking.

wtf is this shit?

That's the worst thing i listened to for a wile.

God, i hope the level themes are not as cringy as this...

That's a joke based off of the rather disastrous reveal stream. That's not going to be how it sounds.

(When anyone links you a youtube video by Silva Gunner, always check if its a lower case L or an upper case i)

Looking forward to a few years from now when everyone says that Sonic Mania is also bad, and that (upcoming retro inspired 2D sonic) will finally bring Sonic back to prominence... So many Sonic fans chasing a dream game that doesn't and never will exist.

People loved the rest of what Taxman has done with the franchise so far and the reasons why the 2D Sonic's post-Rush aren't good has repeatedly been explained.

Mania bar some sort of weird interference by Sonic Team this is going to be tits.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here.

Taxman and Stealth's excellent offerings in both the Sonic/Sonic 2/Sonic CD ports and modding community have, in my eyes, made them the safest pair of hands for delivering a Classic Sonic game fans will enjoy. They know Sonic inside and out, from both a technical and creative perspective.

Too bad we probably won't see definitive 3&K until the year 2080 due to public domain rules.

Will any of us still be alive then?
I believe Taxman has already created Sonic 3 & Knuckles in his engine. For whatever reason Sega hasn't let him release them on iOS or Android. It's been said over and over, but Sonic 1,2, 3 & Knuckles remasters should be on console and PC. His Sonic CD remaster made it to console and PC, but the others have not yet. So after Mania comes out they need to reconsider releasing the original trilogy to console and PC.

Nintendo fans should stop worrying. NX hasn't even been announced!

Moreover, this is just original game announcement. Relax, brehs.

Because Nintendo specifically paid for 3 sonic games that turned out OK at best, then they appear to not be getting what might be the best 2d sonic since 3 & knuckles, while everyone else is.

I have to imagine the pool of people who wouldn't trade boom, lost world and a olympics game for this is small.

That's Nintendo's problem, not Sega.
