DOOM |OT| Rip and tear, until it's done

I doubt anything will top DOOM for a while if you like old-school shooters (i.e. no ADS, no cover, no health regen, no reloading, minimal story, super-fast movement, double-jumping, enemy fire you can see and dodge, huge complex maps, smart backtracking, loads of secrets, etc, etc, etc). The best part is, calling it purely "old-school" sells it short, since DOOM also modernizes the formula in all the right ways.

I bet everything that nothing will top this in quite sometime.

Gameplay wise before anyone jumps at me lols.

Well after thinking about whether to buy or not I said fuck it and brought it earlier today. Main reason I held off was I wasn't sure whether I could get decent performance with my system (GTX 760, AMD 955 BE, 8GB RAM), but game looks and plays really well. I'm running mostly high at 1080p and I'm averaging around 50fps. Very happy with the performance, looks great and plays amazing.

It would be a triumph over the odds, because boy, do I ever hate the Battlefield 3 and 4 campaigns.

Yea they were pretty poor, I think they were just hell-bent on competing with CoD feature-for-feature and had to churn out a modern military FPS campaign - a genre that had been done to death at that point.

I don't think BF1 had to have a campaign, so I'm hoping it's relatively original setting has inspired them to want to make something better.

I'm playing on ultra violence. Game has just taken it up a notch and you really need to be on it to get through each encounter. The overwhelming feeling of relief when that checkpoint finally hits is something else. It's almost like defeating a boss in bloodborne. Feels amazing and I'm left wanting more. After finishing U4 I think I might have to say this is the better game. I know they are different genres but it's about excitement and I feel more excited to dive into Doom and probably replay it once I'm through my first play though. I doubt I'll re-visit U4 apart from some small amount of MP.

HELP! I got to the level where you get the BFG a few days ago and stopped. Tried to start up the game today and I'm spawning in a room I have no idea how to get out of.
I have the BFG (I'm pretty sure it's right after you get it and it's a circular room with a big door to the Lazarus elevator and a rune hidden through a green door on the side. What the hell do I do?
I'm almost convinced the game is glitching because I genuinely cannot find ANY way out. There is a red door I'm convinced I have to lift but the game won't let me. There is no way in hell I'm restarting this mission as my gaming time is very limited and I spent so long getting every collectable and doing all 3 missions. If the is broken and I'm stuck I'm gonna have to just drop the game :(

one, I find myself only really using about half of the weapons. This isn't fully the games fault, but I really don't see any reason to use the chaingun, pistol, or even rocket launcher much (if ever)

Chaingun is awesome once you fully upgrade one of its paths. Rockets are awesome in general, and more so if you go down the remote detonation path.

My problem is how big the gap is from being able to shoot someone to oblivion and being able to just press F to finish them. The difference is fucking staggering (no pun intended). I need to either shoot them for another 5-10 seconds with something like the rocket launcher or even machine gun, or hell, even another 5 shotgun blasts, for them to die.

Stagger range should be ~20% of the remaining HP or so. I don't think there's anything that stands up to a single super shotgun blast or rocket once they go down, save for maybe a baron of hell.

second question: wtf are the red and green pill-bars under your weapon in the HUD?
Red is chainsaw fuel, green is BFG shots.

The first level or two don't do much for the game IMO. I started to become underwhelmed until the levels opened up into the multi-tiered mazes that they become. When that happened and I found my first secret (a classic Doom level) I started to grin.

Yeah right? The first few encounters are pretty stale.

So where do I find that secret? Sounds amazing.

Just finished the game, and i really liked how the game expects of you that by the end you have learned the fundamentals, replaying some of the first levels after finishing the game with all the toys at your disposal is strange because how easy they feel now, i´m gonna start another playtrough in nightmare difficulty to see how i fare

Ran into a weird bug on what I think is the 2nd to last level. You have to
shoot 4 core things
and there's one of those red force fields blocking the exit until you kill everything. I accidentally mantled the red force field and was able to proceed before finishing the area.
I had only shot 3 of the 4 cores.
I was able to advance to the next level and everything.

One underrated feature I absolutely love is that enemies will follow you nearly anywhere. You can't just hide behind a box and pepper enemies till they die. Even Mancubi and Pinkies will leap 2 stories just to find you. Stuff like this is just great.

Totally, it also makes the encounters feel more alive than just hunting down a set number of enemies. I remember being frustrated with parts of Serious Sam and Painkiller because there would be one or two enemies running around a part of the map I couldn't find.

I'm stuck in a room in that exact level and can't progress. Game is way buggier than it should be (but it still rules).

Okay. Today is Friday. I took a half day at work as I am off to see Louis CK tonight.
So being I had a few hours left until I am leaving and also since it is the start of the weekend I decided to hang with my good old dear friend Mary Jane. We have been friends for 23 years now. Over half of my life. We have had an on again off again relationship but in my early 20's we were inseparable. For the past 4 or so years we have kept to just seeing each-other only on the weekends and it has worked our incredibly well, especially for myself. Just a clear head. It is at the point nowadays sometimes we do not even see each-other on the weekend. So when we do hangout, her effect over me is much stronger than it used to be. I just cannot help it.

And when I say I am not sure if I can play Doom while hanging out with MJ, I am not kidding. And that has NEVER happened with a single game in the history of games. I am here sharing my story as I had to stop playing. All kidding aside this is seriously a first in my life. And although I do not partake a lot it is not like I am bugging out right now otherwise. It is just the game gets that damn intense.

Kudos once again id. Kudos.

Has anyone made any custom Doom covers with the PS4 banners on it? I love the inside cover art but it drives me crazy it doesn't have the official PlayStation banner stuff on it. I like consistency.

Best combination to use online? Currently using the combat shotgun and rocket launcher but the rocket launcher seems so useless to me as I can't use it for shit.

I think this game turned out as well as it did because it was scrapped. They got to start from zero with everything they've learned from what they had previously. Kind of similar to what RE2 and RE4 went through. Except in this case I don't want to play doom 3.5.

I've been working 9 days strait, with all kinds of stuff going on outside of work and not much time to game. Looking forward to finally dig into Doom this weekend.

Having a blast so far.

The only thing I've loathed is the platforming sections but thankfully they don't seem to prevalent.

Can anyone tell me how far into the game I am?

Random lady just opened the portal to hell or something. I saved and quit but I assume i'm in hell now

Sorry for the shoddy explanation. I have no idea what's going on in the game but that's absolutely fine. The game does not need a good story to be captivating.

Maybe like a third of the way through? Not far, I'll tell you that much.

The thing I hate most about this game is googling it. I keep finding stuff about the older Doom games.
I'm having an issue where the loading doesn't start. It shows the red symbol and then should continue to 0%. But it is stuck on that red symbol.
It happens when I die and have to reload from checkpoint. And it also happens sometimes when I finish a level.

So if I could just google that issue I would be so happy :D

Reposting for this new page but the game has glitched in the BFG level and I am stuck in a room with absolutely no way out near the end of the mission.
If I restart the level do I lose all my collectibles and challenge progress (I have every rune, secret and collectible in the mission and have completed all challenges)?
If I don't want to restart mission am I stuck here forever?

In SnapMap, is there a way to edit what weapons or equipment the player starts with? I can't find it anywhere.

The Loadout and Inventory objects are in the Player & Team tab.

If you place a Loadout object in the map, you can set what weapons and equipment you want the player to start with in its properties, then connect some logic between the Loadout object and a Player Proxy object so when a player spawns it gives them the loadout you chose.

It works similarly for equipment with the Inventory object if you just want to set what equipment they start with, but instead connect the logic from the Player Proxy (on spawn) to the Equipment object (give equipment). You can then set what equipment to give in the "give equipment" node in the logic chain.

Kind of a long-winded answer, I know, but I hope it helps. :)

Ugh, ultra smooth G Sync, 100+FPS, 1440p and instant mouse response.

Causing me huge nausea problems, never had that before. Feel sick after 10 minutes.

Anyone know what that big open room in the upper part of the labs is?

Never could figure out how to get there, and I have 100%'d that level =\

AFAIK your collectibles are permanently saved on contact.

That said, you can just blow yourself up and replay from the last checkpoint if it's only a fluke scripting error.

This game is amazing on nightmare mode.

Also, I loaded up Doom 3 for kicks and, man, it feels so weird coming from the new Doom. I love Doom 3 but it's so so SO slow and suddenly feels ancient in a weird way.

Great, thanks. It was driving me crazy. I'll try this.

I love the potential of SnapMap, and there's certainly enough there right now to create some great multiplayer maps and horde levels, but what I'm really hoping for is for id to update it with more content and tools to tie it closer to SP.

Everyones already pointed out the restrictive two weapon loadout limit or lack of pausing/automap when playing solo, and that definitely needs a sortin', but it would be great if they could go a step further and add in stuff like; weapons or health/armour pick ups that plop onto the ground directly, boost pads, adding in the missing weapons/power ups/enemies, the HUD/crosshairs from SP, more indoor templates closer to what we see in the story (Surprised there were no gore props or gory environment options considering the SP revels in it), the choice to start user created levels with a title card like in the campaign instead of "STARTING MATCH" and so on. It's a lot of minor and nitpicky stuff for sure, but it would be at least a decent half step if we were to never see any single player DLC in the near future.
