Dark Souls 3 releasing tomorrow in Japan is the worst

i totally forgot this was coming out earlier in japan. oh well, i can wait a little longer this time. it's not like i haven't played a ton of souls games to death before.

I didn't even know the SoulsBorne series had Japanese voice-acting until I saw this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWFcoxdf0pA

It actually didn't have it in the initial release of Bloodborne. Only came as an update alongside the expansion or in the new retail version of the game that included the expansion content.

Sort of a similar story to Dragon's Dogma, which launched with only English voices, but later got a Japanese option in the Dark Arisen version.

Anyway, I was going to buy the Japanese version anyway, so I'm personally happy that it's coming out so soon. Life will be getting extremely busy mid-April for me, so I probably wouldn't have much time to play if I needed to wait until April 12th.

For all the reasons you mentioned and the ease of importing it, I'm simply going to import it.

It's all set!

Pros:

  • Was very easy to do; Make a JP PSN account, buy some Japanese PSN money from Play Asia, preorder the game, download it, done!
  • Avoid all problems you said; Be in the first wave of people discovering game
  • NPC voiceover is in English
  • Souls games not heavily reliant on text
Cons:

  • Japanese text will need to be interpreted, Google Translate on my phone is pretty good at this though and should be effective at assisting me in determining what menu options are and what items/spells do
  • Google Translate App may be insufficient for really getting the flavor and full meaning of the item descriptions, but I'm willing to live with this and get more into the lore later in the NA release
  • Likely trophies won't be compatible with my USA PSN account but I could be wrong

Later on I plan to get hte PC version for dat 60 fps, and that'll be my NA version.

I almost did this exact thing with downloading Jap PSN and buying on PC later on but with hotels for work conferences and tournaments and not getting the rest of the week off work, I don't see the point.

At least my R9 280 should run this pretty damn well if I tone it down a bit.

You guys are so evil with this thread, I've got Play-Asia open looking at the PSN cards and everything!

I'd do it, but I'll be stuck with the Japanese text until the game comes down in price over here because I'm not buying it twice at full release price, that's really the only thing stopping me doing this, because I know it will be months and months of playing with Japanese text until the english version falls to ÂŁ20 or so. It's tempting though!

I'm not really that upset even though Dark Souls 3 is among my most anticipated games of the year. Gives me more time to finish Twilight Princess HD and The Day of the Tentacle.

So impatient....

You will die a gazillion times.

And I will enjoy every death for the next 3 weeks.

Is crazy, and is the first time (and hopefully only one) I did something like this, but is DS3.

Thanks alot! That's going to help a ton. I kinda regret buying the Japanese version, but hopefully i'll be able to go through it.

Same, is a feeling between regret and excitement.

Hope I can manage with impatientGAF as help.

As long as the delay is shorter than the wait Europe had for Demon's Souls I can live with it. Just look at it:

February 5, 2009 (Japan)
June 25, 2010 (Europe)

That was true suffering.

Just 1 more GB to go and the 19.something GB will finish downloading :)

Can't wait for it to come out.

it's an app.

  1. take picture of screen
  2. use finger to highlight japanese text
  3. google spits out english translation in real time of whatever you drew over with your finger
try it. only takes a few seconds to do.

Is there a way to do something similar on PC? I don't have a smartphone :>

I don't think I'll need it just to finish the game but it'd be nice to have that just in case.

Waitttt a second... Is trophy compatibility a thing when it comes to JP games?

I've played tons of US games on my NZ account and got trophies for them. Some games have different versions for different regions (e.g. Binding of Isaac), so you get 1 trophy list per version of the game you own, but I've never heard of trophies that were straight up not compatible.

I was going to wait for the 12th April, but as GAF showed me, there are plenty of resources for the Japanese version if you don't know the language.

From the other Dark Souls 3 thread(links contain spoilers obviously):

I'll probably grab the Japanese version tonight or tomorrow and then double dip in April. Forgive me Velka, for I have sinned.

Also anyone importing and worried about not understanding Japanese, there's already quite a few guides in the making for DS3. And thus, I shall provide:

The Wiki!
Items!
Menus and such!

These will all be updated as people progress in the game. If worse comes to worse, there's trial and error. I've imported quite a few games with little knowledge of the language and I don't have too much an issue.

Edit: Should probably mention that those links may or may not have spoilers! Click at your own risk!

This combined with the Google Translation app, the menus being somewhat similar to the previous Dark Souls games, and people here helping each other out made me change my mind about waiting, and I'm in for the JP version. I can't wait.

In that case you'll need to turn to online resources for the game, of which I'm sure there will be some

I have no idea, I'm trying to get confimation on this myself

Yeah, that was what I was going to do in the first place but the google translate option could have been nice and convenient for translating item descriptions to check for special effects. As it is I'll just play the game ignoring those (or testing them experimentally) - I'm too scared of spoilers to look up anything other than the basic menu translations :P

maybe if you really needed to you could take a screenshot from your ps4 and translate it on your pc -- that's a lot of steps though

Watching people stream the Japanese version is what got me to buy dark souls 1. Sucks we don't get it at the same time but I can manage. If you don't want to be spoiled don't watch or read about it lol.

The fact that I KNOW I'll end up caving and watching streams (at least to a point) is one of the reasons I'm importing. It's happened with each game since Dark Souls 1. Each time I say I will go in dark, but at some point I end up caving and checking out the inevitable pre-release streams. Happened with Dark 1, Dark 2, and Bloodborne. I was pretty familiar with the areas and bosses up to bloodstarved beast by the time I played BB, and that's a shame. All this would surely happen again this week if I wasn't importing. I'm a weak man.

I don't think it's been 100% ruled out that the game data won't have an English language option. It's not unheard of for some games to either have an in-game language option or just determine the language to display based off of your system settings.

I wouldn't count on it, but it's possible considering all versions of the game will already be done.

Apparently, some twitch streamers are getting English PC copies of DS3 on Wed. Lirik confirmed this a little bit ago.

Annoying because I paid extra to play a version I can't understand just because I don't want the temptation of their very streams to spoil things for me

A universal release date woulda solved so much.

So you're upset because you're not going to be the first person in the world to discover something? Gamer expectations are going out of control

Trailblazing is fun. Playing Dark Souls 1 in the first few days of release when most people knew absolutely nothing was really exciting. That experience can't be replicated.

I'm so proud of myself for having avoided the press on this game. I have some vague memories of the E3 debut trailer and that's about it. Can't be more excited to experience this thing.

It's a valid point. Exploring the unknown as a member of the "Souls" community can be a very unique experience. It's like unlocking an ARG or going to a movie opening night before all the spoilers are out.

No, I think the reason is something else.
The game comes out in the west on the 12th April, Twitch streamers can already stream and play it on the 23rd March.
That is 4 weeks away from actual release, I could understand if it would be 1 week before release but so early already?
This reeks even more that the game is basically gold, with the release in Japan, so why not release it for the west too? That is the thing which itches some.
Also spoilers will be huge on reddit or other places, also here I guess.

I would be distraught, but I have a midterm and several assignments due do I won't even have time to play the Japanese release. I can wait for the U.S release.

Edit: But apparently the game can be played in English already WTF.

if you care so much you could always just play the japanese version. Well, unless youre on PC >_>

God, that really pisses me off even more :lol So the English version(on PC at least) is essentially finished and we're waiting because? From needs to stop partnering up with Scamco.
