• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

id Software shows alternative cover arts for DOOM, are 100x better than the default.

Market analysis/research likely determined the one they used has the best impact on generating a purchase. People need to remember here on NeoGAF we're a niche audience that has more invested into video games. There are people who don't stay current on games, who aren't familiar with old titles, and a boxart with generic Halo looking guy with gun may in fact better grab their attention, and their purchase.

People are stupid :(

It's insane that option B wasn't the default choice.

The art is great, tells far more about the game, and is a nice homage to the original.

How do you look at this work of art...

and go "nah," then look at this...

and go "YES! PERFECT!"

???

B should be the default cover with A being the reversible option. The original cover that they showed just didn't have the punch that these have.

Their market research presumably said that the current box art was by far the best choice.

I'm always super curious about this. Lets say this is focus tested or was done by a group of marketors that came up with this boxart or said this would lead to more possible sales.

Now is it because it looks like Call of Duty? I mean obviously yes, I guess what I'm trying to say is people like familiarity which is probably what these tests prove so they go with an incredibly generic boxart but wont that cause them to ignore it more because as your browsing through a gamestop you see a ton of boxarts you already know call of duty, lets say doom is next to it. Wouldn't your eyes glaze over much more quickly as a result of it being too familiar?

I don't really know what I'm saying here. I need my coffee. It just makes me wonder that an attempt to look like other modern day shooters at face value would probably get you more ignored rather than something bold. Like what L4D did with its very bright green box.

I'm assuming this was made after the main cover was selected because otherwise how in the fuck could this have happened

A marketing department eager to still collect their checks shows them 26 graphs detailing how "lone guy with gun facing the front" sells X amount of copies more than any other kind of cover, and how many markets prefer it, and how they tested in stores and random people look at it for 3.2 more seconds on average and how all TCET related data shows every demographic responds more positively to it.

*TCET stands for Total Cover Engagement Time.

So, that's how that happens basically.

Yep

:(

Cover B should be the main cover and A the alternate. Scrap the generic garbage they currently have for the main cover but I presume it's too late.

Doesn't matter to me personally though as I'll have a steam copy anyways.

It's why we can't have nice things. Though reliance on focus-groups and market research does sometimes lead to something pushed so far into 'Accepted by everyone' territory that it backfires and gets lost in the pile of similarly focus-grouped stuff.

They should totally include B (and A even) as alternative inserts that come in the case.

But it worked so well for FUSE. Hey, remember FUSE?

I dunno, the first one confuses me. Does the game have shooting and dudes in it? I don't see a gun or a dude on the cover, so I'm not quite sure what this "doom" thing is all about.
Better just buy Call of Duty to be sure.

This would be funny if it wasn't accurate.

B as default with A as reverse is the clear answer. Scrap the original entirely.

If they had any business savvy they'd use Option B as a 'Day One Edition' cover and have their generic shit cover for the standard edition.

It would basically be nostalgia blackmail but it would sell copies.
