Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward |OT| The Midas Touch

Looping back to this for a second:

- It will never cease to amaze me how secretive they are about things that not only aren't spoilers but would actually be really useful information to have in advance. Why is the Midas Normal iLevel requirement a secret?

1 could be due to the fact the page was written while they're making last minute measurments/adjustments to the raid. I mean, it's XIV devs. Or they don't want to spoil new gear level information in any way which is... really god damn dumb.

The clases/job system of this game needs to be the standard in MMOs going forward. I just switched to Gladiator yesterday just to try the class for a bit. No penalties, no need to roll a new character, no need to respec etc... Amazing. I don't think I can play any other MMO now.

I think newbie tanks struggle to learn how the enmity system works in the game. That's the only real trick, I feel. Most of the time the tanks I encounter who tank poorly don't quite understand how to keep all of the enemies on them at once.

Also some of them don't seem to understand how combo actions work in the game. Or which attacks boost their enmity.

People eventually figure out these mechanics
or switch to dps
, but I think that's where a lot of the "difficulty" of tanking arises. Learning how threat works, how to hold and keep threat, and how best to use your enmity abilities on packs of mobs in dungeons. Also to use Tomahawk/Shield Lob/Unmend and not face pull every group. That too. Or using Flash in a way that actually hits all of the enemies. And not to prepop literally your entire defensive cooldown armory before you pull the boss.

I've seen some shit, man. I've seen some shit.

As a new player who happened to pick Gladiator without knowing anything about the Tank/DPS/Healer roles, I think I did an okay job holding enmity most of the time. My problem was not knowing my way around dungeons with my party expecting me to lead. I switched to a DPS at level 40 when dungeons/duties started involving more complicated mechanics.

I'm pretty sure there was no explanation of roles when I created my character, which seems a little odd for a game that revolves so heavily around them. I definitely wouldn't have picked a tank; I just like sword users.

I know what you mean completely. In beta I picked Gladiator because I like sword users as well. Tanking was rough at the start because you're kind of just... thrown into it with a handful of skills and you're expected to just figure it out. I got that character up to 40 I think before I stopped playing it. When I made my second/current character I decided to roll a dps because of the same things you said. I didn't know the dungeons or how to traverse them and people really lean on the tank to be the party's leader.

Now that I actually know the game and played all of the roles I really enjoy tanking, but I still get that nervousness when I go to tank a dungeon or a boss for the first time even if i've run that dungeon a ton before as a dps. The game doesn't really give a clear tutorial on enmity and establishing it. In my opinion the most important thing they could add to tanking that doesn't exist is an icon or a color for the enmity list for a target you're about to lose hate from. It's a pretty shitty feeling as a tank to see everything in the red, then suddenly you lose a mob to some dps or whatever and had no idea it was happening.

- Is there a PLD skill that involves poking enemies in the nose with the edge of your shield? Because that seems to be what that PLD is doing.
HW saw a lot of new PLD skill changes no one talks about, that is probably Shield Boop but could be Rage of Boop mid animation.

They probably hadn't finalized it yet when the post was written.

Does anyone play in Excalibur? I moved from Ragnarok (EU) since the time zone doesn't work for me anymore and I'm going to play with a friend there in Excalibur, but this server seems dead. Is it maybe a pre-patch lull or something? Ragnarok was certainly livelier, the PF busier, hunt linkshells, more people doing FATEs.

lol just came from Ragnarok but Ragnarok is much bigger population wise than Excalibur so there is that. I think it's just a pre patch lull

Meh, I don't know if it's just burn out, but Bard and Summoner just have not been that fun for me for the past several weeks.

Maybe it's time to go Melee DPS and see what the fuss is about to change stuff up.

I'm on Excal, normally it's super lively but everything is super ded af. Even our raid group has deteriorated to the point of having to find a healer every week before just saying fuck it and playing something else together that night. Patch pls

Well. Ragnarok was the server to be on if you're EU since 1.x, even with the new servers at the beginning of ARR, many new players joined Ragnarok, so there was never shortage of people for Fates, shouts, PF, or w/e.

I'm also on Excalibur. Was busier a few months ago so I think people are just waiting on the patch.

I hope that's it and that it'll pick up at the end of the month, because right now it's somewhat boring (and slow) doing open world stuff, specially not knowing anyone else here.

Ultros is always pretty busy IMO, good thing the gaf fc is here.
There's enough "big" communities from elsewhere on the internet that that tend to draw people in. Giantbomb's unofficial FC is here, one of the guys from Two Best Friends Play started a FC back in April and I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting.

Cerberus still very lively .

nothing but a sea of blue names inside cities .

I wish I could say the same but people on mine only really hang out in Idyllshire. Nobody cares about Foundation or other beautiful spots in Eorzea much anymore. I think we also have a shortage of tanks to make things even worse. :p I need to see what a big server is like someday.

Okay, full PVP armor, just need one more level to get the weapon, buuuuut I need a break from PVP so, guess I'll just finish up that last level with just the daily roulettes or something.

Guess it's time to level something. <_<;;

Looks like tome caster gear is based off of Shiva. I can dig it.
Since he didn't link it:

Dragoon

BLM/WHM?

Monk and Dragoon have the same primary stat but Monk gets Ifrit and Dragoon has Garuda, so I guess there really is just going to be one for every job.

And then the Gnath have their shit together: We got your bug people quests, we got your bug people accessories over here at Gnath Mart!

Not one for every job, one for every type. Dragoon and MNK always have different gear aside from accessories, Maiming/Slaying versus Striking, Scouting vs aiming etc. Tank armor will be useable on all 3 tank jobs, healer set on all 3 healers, caster on both casting etc.

Oh yeah you're right. I'm dumb.

Also to clarify based on translation, the Shiva set is casting gear, Garuda is Slaying, Ifrit is Striking, Leviathan is Scouting. That leaves fending, healing and aiming sets left unaccounted for and 2-3 primals from 2.0 left (not including enkidu), Moggle Mog, Titan, and Ramuh. Based on Shiva getting caster gear, unless there is a reskin for healer, my guess is Healer is Moggle Mog, Aiming is Ramuh and the most obvious titan as tank.

Yeah that's BLM/SMN according to the site. They also had ninja

finalfantasyxiv_22_cs1w1_400x.jpg

So that just leaves ranged, tank, healer to be revealed. Tank being Titan probably safe bet. Ranged Ramuh? I don't know healer, but I'd laugh if it was mog.

oh forgot, they also had more Midas gear shots, this one is tank

No crazy arm flap gear after all, the rest seems same as previously revealed.

Healer being Mog will make me quit the game forever.
Phoenix or go home.
I'll take a Shiva reskin.

Of course they could always assign Ramuh to healing but then...

I would absolutely love it if FATEs were changed so that you need to both have contributed a portion of damage and be present at the completion of the FATE to get credit. Every time some schmo tries to tag a FATE and leave me to finish it off I just leave it and let it reset. It has gotten to the point where I will purposely tag enemies before they can get to them and AoE burn mobs to make them sweat if I see the same people leaving early.

Healer has to be Ramuh. It only makes sense.

Then again this is FFXIV...
Well I didn't expect Dragoon to be Garuda or caster to be Shiva, but there they are

Right now
MNK Ifrit
DRG Garuda
BLM/SMN Shiva
NIN Leviathan

We have
PLD/WAR
WHM/SCH/AST
BRD/MCH

And
Ramuh
Mog King
TITAN

Left if we're only considering ARR primals (not including Ultima and Bahamut).

What if BRD/MCH is Ramuh? Healers are going to be Mog! lol

iammeiam

Dammit, game. I wanted to be Shiva!

I will accept Ramuh or Mog though, I guess. Although there's no way they're topping the current Mog gun.

What is your definition of 'better'? They're similarly populated, mostly English-speaking servers with an active raid scene. Odin has EU first A4s I think if that counts towards being good.

Oh okay so they're pretty much the same.
