iOS Gaming January 2016 | Should old applications be forgot?

So I am looking for some games (maybe some of the books?) where I can play without sound.

I am finding that I play a lot without sound because most of the time lately it is in bed after the wife has fallen asleep, or is trying to sleep. At this point I do not feel like dealing with headphones/cables etc.

Any good suggestions? I played Monument Valley and Lara Croft this way and it was good.

I usually listen to podcasts while playing so in theory:

Any of the interactive fiction games (80 Days, Sorcery, Heavy Metal Thunder)
Perfect Paths
Card Crawl
Hero Emblems
Blockwick 2
99 Bricks

jon bones

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
podcasts are 100% the thing to listen to while iOS gaming

Crashlands is the best mobile game in ages, def check it out!

Depends on the games of course. I wouldnt listen to podcasts while playing Monument Valley or Dark Echo or This War of Mine. But Door Kickers, Crashlands, etc., sure

But honestly I dont listen too often because I tend to miss parts of the podcast due to focusing on the game

How soon we forgot The Room 3, Subterfuge, etc. :p

Being a sound designer for mobile games is sometimes not the most rewarding job in the world. lol

LOL.
If it can be of help, I'm the contrary...I can't play anything without the game sound/music/the whole experience.
On the contrary....often sounds do for me much more than graphics, immersion-wise.
Sound design imho can do or break a game, it's too underrated.

I 'solved' the wife problem with a pair of BT little headphones after having used the normal headphones till I played Device 6 and almost strangled myself.

The light problem still remains tough...expecially on iPad.

Hah! Nothing personal. Whenever I play not in bed I have the game sound up. It is just in situations like this!

Hey guys..my kid is pretty into pokemon. I know they don't have an IOS game, but what is the 'best' game where you can basically do the same things as in pokemon. (Fight monsters, get new monsters etc).

I know there are guides out there, but looking for personal opinions.

Does anyone have any suggestions for good tower defense or strategy games on iPhone. Something level based. I'm looking for something to pass some time.

As background I've played and enjoyed all of the following: Royal Envoy 2 (and Campaign for the Crown), Kingdom Rushes, Fieldrunners, Cursed TD2, Carrot Fantasy, Bloons, and my recent favorite, Artificial Defense.

Really wish they would put out Royal Envoy 3 on ios.

Sleep Attack is cool. It has a unique mechanic of manipulating the paths themselves

Have you played any of the Anomaly games? They're all excellent. First three are reverse tower defense. The last one, Anomaly Defenders, is straightforward tower defense but is still a great game. The Sentinel series is also good, even if older (for reference, last one Sentinel 4 didn't get quite as good reception, but I think it was mainly for not "evolving" the series much).

And, yes, I'd also recommend Sleep Attack. OTTD is also another good one.

Oh, and Tiny Guardians is a unique take, mixing tower defense and RTS.

While loving Crashlands, I played Chaos Rings 3 some more (in my rotation) and just finished Episode 1 after over 11 hours of gameplay. Wow, what a great RPG and perfectly made for mobile. I honestly didn't know their were separate episodes (think there are 4) so looking at 40+ hours and I haven't done hardly any of the side quests, except the minimum needed to bridge between the main story quests.

Any self respecting JRPG lover needs to have it in their iOS collection. And I know some say it doesn't work on iOS 9 but I've had no issues on my Mini 2 running 9.2.

Sorry for the triple post, but since they're different subjects....

Anyone playing Lost in Harmony? Folks over on TA seem impressed and that PG review may push me over the edge (because I need yet another game in my backlog ;) ).

Thanks for the recs. Definitely will try these, especially Sleep Attack.

I think I played at least one of the Anomaly games. It didn't click with me at the time but maybe I'll give it another shot.

Starting today I'm joining More_Badass as part of Pocket Gamer's team:

Pretty excited about that :)
Congratulations!

Just to join in the discussion on playing iOS games, I usually play mobile games while either watching Netflix in the living room or while in front of my computer watching twitch streamers. I've lately got addicted to watching CSGO streamers while playing Power Hover, it just feels so relaxing.

Oh man, Lost in Harmony is the best rhythm game I've played since Ouendan and EBA.

EDIT: Made a terrible OT that is in no way reflective of how great this game is.

Cool. I just bought it too. Downloading as we speak.

Edit: Hoiy crap is this good! Love the story and mix of gameplay. Music is phenomenal. Buy this!!!

And we need like 11,000 buyers to unlock another story mode...sadly only at like 385 so some self interest there ;).

Crashlands and this are likely to be on my end of year Top 10. It's that good!

So I see Saturday Morning RPG is getting a physical release on Vita. Does anyone know what the current status of the iOS version is? If they're still working on it?

I remember liking the game when it first came out but then never knew if the other chapters would come.

Looks like it only has four chapters on iOS but I thought the full game has five. So did they just abandon the iOS version?

Glad to hear it! I think mobile games got kind of stuck in this unfortunate loop of low effort in sound in popular mobile games resulting in people being even more turned off by the sound in mobile games. Speaking of loops, I still remember that low quality looping music in Candy Crush Saga that didn't even loop correctly... and I think they still have that problem in their newer games. I dunno, it just irked me to no end. lol
But there are definitely some mobile games with great sound design as well, usually aimed at crowds that are willing to appreciate it better, I think.

Hah! Nothing personal. Whenever I play not in bed I have the game sound up. It is just in situations like this!

No, it's completely fine. I've played mobile games with the sound turned off too (but don't tell anyone)!

I just started playing lifeline (that I got for free), and I'm pretty surprised it got such a good reception. The concept is clever, but the writing makes it sound like you are conversing with a twelve year old, written by a twelve year old.

Is one button travel any better?

I had exactly the same reaction with that game. I did want to like it in theory but the goofy nature of the main character clashed with the horrific event they were stuck in constantly.

Same here. Not that I've ever been an astronaut (one of my NY resolutions though) but If I was stuck in space I hope I wouldn't sound like I was handing in my English essay in the 5th grade. No urgency to it and was just annoying to read. Deleted it after 5 minutes. Interesting concept however.

Ahaha, I agree with you guys completely. If astronauts are supposed to represent the most adventurous, intelligent and fearless of mankind than the protagonist of Lifeline comes across as an incompetent moron.

If I recall well, Taylor is NOT an astronaut.
He is simply a
chemistry young student that won a prize to be in space
or something like that.

Thats right.

I just finished the Silent Night Sequel... So we are getting a third game with Taylor or not? I would love to see what happens next.

Even though he isn't an astronaut, to me the tone of his dialogue is just completely off given the situation. I don't know if it's trying to ape the Martian or something but it comes across really weird.

All this talk on iOS music got me wondering, what is everyone's favourite single track and/or soundtrack from an iOS game? I still find myself humming the Tiny Wings main theme from time to time, years after I have finished with that game.
