Canadian Gaming "Deals" and Discussion Thread 6: Sorry, We Can't Afford a New Thread

On a related note, Kobo is being so stingy with their coupons lately. I remember when they gave out multi-use use coupons that would work for weeks.

Anyone have any opinions re: Kobo vs Kindle? Any reason to go with one over the other?

Is Kobo tied to Indigo? My worry with them is how long Indigo actually remains in business....

I don't think it's "tied" to Indigo, but I don't believe that the ebook files you buy from Amazon are compatible with the Kobo. You should be able to convert them though.

If you have a friend with a student account, I think the Kindle Paperwhite is $99.99 on Amazon.ca so that's probably the best ereader value right now.

I have a Kobo Aura HD, and love it big time. I haven't tried out the Kindle, though. Kobo format is ePub, though it does read PDF as well, whereas Kindle is the MOBI format if I'm not mistaken.

But yeah, ebooks can be bought anywhere for the Kobo, as long as you have it in ePub.

There is a program called Calibre that is able to transfer between formats, though, and works really well if you happen upon deals and can then make them MOBI or ePub.

Kobo is now owned by Rakuten, a major Japanese retailer, so its fortunes aren't really tied to Indigo anymore.

Thank god for my pre-orders. Won't be buying any new games in 2016.

Prices keeps going up and I keep making the same money... food is starting to get pretty expensive... must be rough for people who makes below 20$/hour.... can't even think about minimum wage.

Was planning to buy a new smartphone (would like to thank those who tried to help me out a few pages back) but I'll wait for a decent deal to show up on RFD before I make a decision.

I just bought another year of PS Plus at $49.99 in case it goes up soon. Would kick myself otherwise.
Bought many games during the last four weeks, so I'll be good for a while

You at least got it at Amazon or Costco and saved yourself a toonie more right?

It's $47.99 at both.

I already had to cancel most of my pre-orders because it was going to be too expensive, but at $84.99+ I just can't imagine buying games day one anymore.

I think it's $46.99 if you get it at a Costco warehouse :)

Locking in a couple of years isn't a bad idea. Might be worth $30-ish if things keep going as they are with the loonie.

I had an old kindle that I liked but I can't say anything about the newer ones. I still sometimes buy ebooks from Amazon because sometimes books are slightly cheaper there or exclusive to Amazon, and of course, their customer service is pretty good. The only thing I don't really like about them is that I tend to buy a lot of digital manga, but Amazon doesn't actually allow you to download manga/comics, which means you can't remove the DRM and read it in another program.

These days I have a Kobo Aura, which has been my favorite ereader yet, so I tend to buy most of my ebooks from Kobo when I can. Sometimes, depending of the publishers you even get drm free books that you can read wherever, and you can actually download manga and keep backups through Calibre (have to use the apprentice alf plugin). They use to hand out a lot of coupons, but now they focus more on their rewards program and their contests coupons. I don't bother with their contests usually but I follow this thread since they post tons of normal/contest coupons.

Brehs.

$84.99 is only the beginning, I'm predicting we will see $94.99 before the end of the year

Ahahahahahahahahahahah. God, I'm glad I 30% amazon.ca everything I needed to keep me preoccupied for the next 3 years.

Did anyone else get a free $5 credit from Indigo this morning? I think it expires in a week or so.

I just ordered a Game of Thrones t-shirt that was on sale for $6.25 lol

Right now, im 19 and i live at home and this is starting to look like the end of buying new games every 6 months :/

Wouldn't surprise me at all, a lot of the economists I deal with are calling for less than that. Bottoming out at around 60 cents.

WTF?! 60 cents!!!! Shit, I though 80 cents was bad enough. I don't think I can handle this. If it does reach that low, I'll have to say goodbye to all those limited edition/print games that I import from US.

60 cents? Fuck. I don't think I was alive when it was that low.
It's never been that low... ever.

All-time historic low was 61.79 cents US set on January 21st, 2002 in mid-day trading.
The lowest amount it has ever closed at was 61.98 cents US three days prior to that.

Yeah, I've had to stop buying NISA limited editions because the exchange rate + shipping cost is insane.

Try being a fan of series that Aniplex owns.
I'm going to be sorely tempted by Your Lie is April on BluRay once the dub is complete and it ships and I'm going to be sorely conflicted about the amount of money I will undoubtedly spend on it.

I'll never complete the Persona 3 movie set.

I'll never BUY a Persona 3 movie, based on the price I saw for the initial release of the first one. It was something ridiculous like $60 for a single movie. I know anime is expensive but holy crap.

Lol tell me about it. Every time Aniplex picks up a series I'm interested in my heart sinks cause I know I'll never own it. Never gonna pay the ridiculous prices for Aniplex licensed series no matter how good they are.

I bought like $200 USD worth of Rightstuf gift cards in July specifically for this purpose

should have bought more

They gave me a points top up to reach $20 worth of points that expires on Sunday. Not as great in comparison because I was already pretty close to it, but ok.

To think back then that less than six years later it would reach a modern-day high of over $1.10 US during mid-day trading on the 7th of November, 2007. Modern-day closing peak of $1.08 that November also.

The Canadian Dollar is one hell of a ride...

Not a gaming deal:

I was looking at my Microsoft subscriptions and there was an offer for one free month of Office 365 if I turn on auto-renewal. I was planning to turn it on anyway, so yeah, if you have Office 365 and plan to renew check your Microsoft account.

anyone know where I could find a copy of Game & Wario for the Wii U? or anyone have a copy they dont mind selling? can't find it in stores anywhere

Goddamnit, another rare and expensive Nintendo game this gen? :/ The prices don't seem that jacked up on eBay for used copies yet. Local stores and Kijiji are other options.

I'm gonna start eyeing the used games on BB, EB, and at local game shops. These Austranada game prices simply aren't worth it. We haven't even seen what future first party Wii U or NX game prices are like yet.

If you haven't preordered TLoZ Wii U yet, you might want to do so by next E3.

Looking forward to posting:

Call of Duty: <Subtitle Here> Standard Edition is $59.99 ($40 off) @ BestBuy during Boxing Day 2016.

LOL stap.
