First trailer then 6 months later a gameplay trailer, they are moving pretty fast. I am beginning to think they are prioritizing this over ff15 lol

"Impossible" to make it one game? I don't understand this. The original wasn't even remotely one of the largest RPGs to be released all in one go; even if they double the size of the game and take into account all the enhancements, it'll still be smaller than something like Witcher 3 or various other RPGs, possibly even including FFXV.

As a rough example.

Episode I: Midgar to Junon. You would only be able explore one continent. Just like the original game.

Episode II: Costa Del Sol to Rocket Town. Another continent is added to explore. Just like the original game.

Episode III: Wutai - Nothern Crater. The rest of the map opens up and you'd finally be able to explore everywhere with Highwind. Just like the original game.

I've gone through the five stages of gaming grief very quickly today! I've now reached the acceptance stage where I'd be happy with this breakdown.

Yes, but this:

Does not scream "ARPG" to me, nor does the presence of a defend command.

The translation is poorly phrased. What he is saying is that he wants a more tactical action battle systen rather than one which relies on complex player input. So maybe positioning and using the right spells and attacks would be more effective than trying to melee DMC style with dodging and reflexes.

He specifically says it is an action battle system multiple times. There is no ambigiuity in Japanese.

lmao what is this thread? Folks suddenly now have faith in SE? After all the endless shitting on Square Enix ability to develop games in pretty much every single FFXV thread. All it took was a pretty trailer about FF7 to make you all quickly change your tunes and want to believe whatever they say with no real questions asked.

You guys are so damn fickle holy shit.

They seem to be approaching this like it's an entirely new game, rather than a simple rebuild. If that's the case I can somewhat forgive them for going episodic.

Some of us never shit on SE, actually. So quit with the generalisations.

They're talking as if these episodes will have the scope and detail of a full priced game.

Each episode being a 60 dollar game...I think that's a great way to approach being true to the original's scope

Some people won't like it, but this feels like the only way it could be done, while still making a profit making the project worthwhile

I think it all depends on just how much content is in each episode, if it's split like Starcraft 2 I'd have no problems paying for each one individually because they felt like they had enough content in them.

Yeah. Short term it's a disappointment. On principle of not being one big game, it's a disappointment. I feel that too.

But the fact that it's multiple parts means that I can actually see them deliver the full story of the game. I was really having a hard time believing that they could make the full game of FFVII into a modern AAA game, and I was thinking masses of it would have to get cut. Now I could see them giving us the whole story.

I'm curious to see how they do the ending of each game.

Gotta ask about the adjusting the story line part. Does it mean they are going to change some characters' fates here?

They'll probably flesh out Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie some more and probably make their deaths more impactful. They'll also integrate Yuffie and Vincent into the main plot and not make them missable. Maybe some Crisis Core flashbacks with Zack.

Think about it.

When a town was a tiny room (a pre-rendered jpeg) that you could walk across the entirety of in 5 seconds, it now needs to be a full 3D environment with the scope that we would really believe is a town.

When a cutscene was 5 polygons and 10 dialogue boxes that you could mash through in 30 seconds, it now needs to be a 5 minute, fully voiced, 3D modelled real time animation.

When a battle was a cut to the same generic "factory" background with less polygonal detail than one strand of Lightning's hair, it now needs to be a unique full 3D environment set piece with spaces to allow for combat interactions that feel satisfying in the modern context.

Making FFVII with modern detail means inflating the size of the game significantly. If people don't yet understand that... think it through.

We only get to explore like... 10 screens of the Midgar slum in the original game, and that's with a fixed camera. Recreating Midgar alone - with the scale and size of what the we expect from a new high-profile-high-budget game - would be a massive undertaking.

No real questions asked? Some people rightfully waited for more clarity and we got that. People are still voicing concern in other areas but they should have said this info first instead of that vague ass statement.

Also this is coming from the developers mouth. I'll be fair and let them do what they do first.

It's the opposite. The fact that it's episodic means we will see it sooner.

Or are you seriously going to wait for all of them to be released before playing? That's like refusing to watch the new Star Wars movie until the whole trilogy is out.

Yes I would wait because our luck SE will be kickstarting the last few episodes in 2030 because they lost too many sales selling the first 5 episodes 3 years apart.

Any other company I'd have some hope but these guys /facepalm ya... this will end with a "please understand" speech in a few years no doubt =(

I think I'll play it low and avoid being disappointed until it's all actually available.

All it took was Nomura's involvement.

Maybe have something like a top down view of Cloud running around on a more detailed world map like in the original game?
So people can complain about it being half assed and we can all start begging for another remake in ten years with the overworld at proper scale?

They need to go all out with this. Any part left out will be disappointing. Any part compromised will feel disappointing.

If an episodic release is the solution to making the game at the same scale and density we all want then so be it.

I'm starting to fear the season pass syndrome. I REALLY hope that they don't go overboard with the prices for this episodic content. Square don't crew this up...

GAF is like a pancake.

It flips and flops and it don't ever stop.

So it's multiple games so they don't have to cut anything, but they still are cutting things and stretching out midgar. Uh huh.

Id expect something like FFXV world map

Season pass? Episodic content?

Square Enix in Japan doesn't fuck with that shit. Let's get your disappointment out of the way right now. Each one of these "pieces" of the game is actually going to be a full-priced product.

They will each be more like a movie in a trilogy, rather than an episode in a TV season.

You think any of this mattered in the FFXV threads? No matter what SE said, folks used it as a way to continue to mock them. The change in attitude here is hilarious and I hope the FFXV defenders are getting a good laugh out of this thread.

They never have said that the entire city of Midgar will be explorable though, just areas that weren't in the original.

And even if it is, there are still RPGs out there released in one piece that have a hell of a lot more explorable areas than that. Keep in mind that the entire rest of the FFVII map is pretty sparse.

Not only is it huge.It so complex and uneven geometrically.

If they deliver a truly uncompromising version of Midgar in HD,then the multi-release would be justified.

FFXV will definitely win many people over, I expect when they show it in March people will be really impressed.
Though I can understand some of the frustration people have had with it, as the whole ps360 era was a cluster fuck, relatively, by SE's standards. But we're over the worst of it finally.

If I would have to guess. Episode 1 (or desc 1 or whatever they would call it) will be just Midgar until they get out after the fight in Shinra HQ.

Sounds like a cluster fuck.

They've remade previous FFs without butchering them, but the most famous one they have to change things to surprise players and divide the game into episodes. It's ridiculous and meant to grab as much money as possible.

If 4 guys in a basement can make somehing as expansive as No Man's Sky, a whole company can't remake a game from 1997? Amateurs.

Verendus, he was right,

But yeah.. season pass, collector's editions, 7 episodes,,

Day one, fuck it.

People are repeating the 7 episodes thing a lot...

....sometimes mod joke edits of thread titles actually contribute to misinformation :/

It's funny to think that I'm not so much a Final Fantasy or Square-Enix fan, but instead I'm a Nomura fan. I LOVE everything he's involved in, and the announcements and trailers from the game's he Directs get me the most hype. The only reason I'm even into FFXV is because of him obviously.

On topic I think the people saying episodes are wrong. We're gonna get 2-3 full priced games. The scope of this project is HUGE and since they want to satisfy the fans and cut minimal content out they're going to split it. The thought of "Episodes" of a JRPG that are like 4-5 hours is RIDICULOUS.

I've always been a SE fan and I even like FF13. So I ain't backpeddaling on shit. You might not agree with my opinions, but I stand by them.

Which FF remake was as ambitious as this?

I kinda feel itll be every 18 months from 2017 and itll be the storyline of each disc.

They are not that comparable at all...
