New XCOM 2 enemy revealed: the Andromedon

https://xcom.com/news/en-dont-get-in-the-andromedons-way-in-xcom-2

andromedon_screen_20.jpg

Each Andromedon sits inside of an advanced Battlesuit, which our scientists believe helps them survive Earth’s atmosphere. The Battlesuit provides tactical benefits to the Andromedon: it can tear down most walls with ease and devastate XCOM soldiers with powerful melee strikes. Rangers, take note!

Our observations have also revealed the Andromedon is immune to fire, poison and acid, so don’t bother wasting your enhanced ammunition when encountering this elite alien unit. We’ve even heard sporadic reports that the Andromedon’s Battlesuit can act independent of its host, though we’re unable to confirm at this time.

For those who haven't been keeping up, the previously shown enemies:

Shit, the enemies look fantastic and terrifying at the same time.
I can already imagine several squads getting wiped ;-;

One thing I'm not liking is that the aliens seem to lack consistency in terms of art direction. Looks like a bunch of random monsters from different games.

Looks very big daddy-esque, sounds like it soaks up damage too, some of these enemies combinations together are just going to be a nightmare to deal with.

I believe in the lore they explain this by having an overarching alien species (Ethereals) that have dominated other alien species and mutated them to serve different purposes, so it somewhat makes sense why they look nothing alike. They are all from different planets and ecosystems.

BIG DADDY HAS ARRIVED

edit: Archon is like right out of Final Fantasy, final boss phase 7 or something rofl

I'm not entirely sure why, but as soon as I look at the Andromedons I just start hearing Big Show's theme song in my head. I can already picture myself hearing "Weeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllllllllllll...." every time I think I've won a mission and see one of those popping out of nowhere haha.

Yeah, it's a interplanetary empire of multiples species conquered and genetically modified by the ethereals, so it makes sense why they are so different. Just noticed I just write the same thing you did, man I shouldn't stay awake till 9 AM.

Whoooow. Upon the release of the first trailer I wasn't impressed AT ALL by what a saw... but since then (I haven't been keeping up) it seems like there is a TON of variety and they really improved the graphics quality. This went from a "wait" to a buy on day one.

:)

While I like the design I think it kind of goes against that idea though. If whatever is in there can't survive the atmosphere, why didn't they just change it to be able to. A minor nitpick in a game that has little story or need for one, but since we're on the topic...

But hey if they can put tiny sectoids into giant mechs why not? I'd rather this thing than fucking psychic shielded mechtoids. Personally my most hated enemy.

I spoiled myself too much on the first game because I kept watching every video with Jake Solomon in it. XCOM is much more effective if you don't know what you're going to be facing, since they are relying less on nostalgia and classic designs this time around I really want to avoid information on this game. But it's haaaaaaard (hence why I'm in here)

Lots of emphasis on the suit, wonder what the alien within (or elsewhere? They seem to hint at that as a possibility?) looks/acts like.

Would be interesting if the suit could be near-invulnerable but could be easily taken out if you removed the commander from elsewhere.

I hope they change the autopsies so they are as graphic as they used to be in OG X-Com. The new ones were kind of meh.

Maybe their original habitat is so radically different from Earth that not even the Ethereals can make them survive in our atmosphere?

To be honest, I always found the original autopsies a little bit of a mess.It was just too much 'a pile of blobby organs' without much in the way of a frame of reference to make them look truly like autopsies.

The floater there's a good exception, though, with the inbuilt floating device.

I wasn't expecting so many new enemy types going into this, but Firaxis has pleasantly surprised me so far. A glorified expansion pack this is not.

From these screens and gifs it's easy to see how Xcom 2 is impossible to play with a gamepad.
Honestly, I feel the opposite. To me, the UI looks pretty much the same as the old one, which you could use just fine with a gamepad. You just need to up the text size and get somewhat clever with remappings here and there.

Man, this game looks fantastic.
Still reminds me I need to beat the first.
Technically, you don't need to, since XCOM2's story assumes you lost the first game.

Honestly, now I'm even more hyped about the eventual Terror from the Deep reboot. With so many amazing new enemies, I expect Firaxis to get Lovecraftian AF.

I cannot wait to try this shit(and see what the modders come up with).

Jake Solomon has said that TFTD isn't likely in many interviews.

Wait wat? I thought you won, but still got hosed in the end.
Jake Solomon and the producers have said in many interviews that this scenario is based on the assumption that you lost your XCOM: EU campaigns.
