LTTP in progress: NIER - Because Platinum Games is making the sequel.

It's interesting that you think the game has character issues. That's something that could be cleared up even further on a NG+. Seriously, you'll have to put up with some more repetition, but the story will open up even more.

It's a weird design decision, but at least you're only playing the second half of the game.

Well all right, I started NG+. Seems they'll be delivering backstory in text adventure mode?

And uh there it is, I guess.

I'm actually a little concerned for OP. He devoured the game in almost one constant sitting. Step away from the TV... and then immediately play New Game + because the game is not yet over.

EDIT: He's back at the TV already

How does Drakengard 3 tie into Nier if at all? These 2 games have been sitting on my shelf since they came out and haven't spent more than about an hour in each. I've had such a hard time looking past a lot of the jank in both games but maybe I'll give it a shot now since Nier gets so much praise.

Jank is part of the experience lol

Nier is a follow-up to one of the endings in Drakengard 1.

Drakengard 3 is a prequel to Drakengard 1, and one of the D3 endings goes to D1.

Play those games for the story, accept the jank

Yeah there's something about this game that keeps driving me back to it. I'm not sure what it is. :p

You may have to do it if you want to be able to say "I finished Nier".
NG+ is a confusing term in Taro's games; they are more of a continuation / alternate version of the story than what I'm sure you're expecting this NG+ to be.

Like most of the background, it is sadly not directly in the game, but yeah.
Aside the research documents that Popola gave you (that I hope you read), the backstory is here:
https://docs.google.com/View?id=dgvmkf89_228fxgghgg3&pli=1

Yeah I just regained control of the main character, re-read Popola's documents. I guess stuff will become more clear later on. Not exactly sure what's going on with her and her shade.

edit: oh come on my quest log didn't make it to NG+? I'm definitely not going to bother with any of that shit now.

Best/worst part of NG+ for me was
when I went out onto the field and killed some shades, only for them to beg for their lives and cry

I was like "what the fuck"

BTW, some time I ago I think I read something about Kaine being a dude or having a penis or something. Was that someone making shit up or is this something that will be revealed in another ending?

She's very clearly not a dude, but she is intersexed.

I did some. I just can't be bothered to grind for items. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Did any of you ever grow stuff in your garden? I was at a point where trophy hunting was sort of interesting but those sidequests were borderline insane.

You do the sidequests for the banter, initially its just Weiss ripping on you for lacking the self respect to just say NO to doing this trivia, but as your party expands it gets somewhat more nuanced.

There are some fairly significant storyline enhancing sidequests, most notably one that takes place in Facade that's kind of disturbing.

The fishing quest-line is basically one elaborate, extended joke though. I thought it was hilarious, and worth the relatively small time-investment required if you know where to catch what.

Only the completed quests. I have to re-accept and re-do any other quest that was in progress.

There's a pretty large gaping canyon of a reason for that. You have one last opportunity to take care of some of the stuff in the place I'm referring to before it becomes what I'm referring to.

Prioritize the quests with weapon rewards, I'm sure there's an FAQ. Treat NG+ like a boss rush when you get to round 3, shouldn't take more than an hour or 3 to actually do everything if you're mostly done with quests. Run through the bosses one last time and save at the last save point. You'll get a choice at the end if you have all the weapons obtained. Pick the choice that isn't accompanied by warnings first for ending C, reload, then enjoy the best finale in any video game ever

Oh and for bullshit like the birds eggs, the dlc is a wierd little combat trial that drops them easily.

I actually got a copy from amazon a few weeks before the sequel announcement and put it in the backlog. Platinum definitely moved Nier 1 up in the queue though, to say the least.

(I actually got ending E in Drakengard but never played any of the games after)

One of those weapons requires grinding. Yeah thanks, but I think I'll be youtubing that stuff.

You just have to GET the weapons, not upgrade them. Honestly it's not anything that should really take all that much effort.

You need to grind machine oil to finish that quest according to this faq. Is there an actual difference between doing this stuff and just watching it on youtube? Getting all weapons is going to require lotsa money too. That's more grinding.

Yeah, a specific part of the ending will lose all of its impact if you just watch it somewhere.

Some people will hate me for saying this, but if you really can't be bothered to do sidequest, just youtube ending C and D. Be warned it contains an extra boss and a new ending, but other than that the run is the same as ending B.

You MUST do ending B though, because there's changes from start to finish. It actually add things to the story.

EDIT: That being said, now that I think about it, I dont remember much grinding for weapons. There is 1? quest weapon. The other one (the pipe) is awarded to you after ending B.

I think there is. The things the game makes you do as part of the ending are pretty powerful.

I've read about it.

There's zero chance I would ever
let a game delete my save file.

I will do run B, the other two eh most likely won't be happening.

Yeah so you gotta do some grinding in Beepy's home to get a weapon or two but I did the grind for all weapons and it wasn't nearly as daunting as you might think. Ending D is quite important. I promise it's not nearly as annoying as some sidequests.
You'll likely have most weapons by then anyway.

Telling people what's coming in ending D should be considered a spoiler. It loses a lot of the impact when you know it, even if it's just that bit.

I knew, so I backed up my save right after the last save point
. I'm cheap.

And you just spoiled yourself one of the best ending ever. And then yeah, just youtube it if you've already spoiled yourself that.

I start to think Nier will be one of those rare games that will become much harder to appreciate. Every time I recommend this game to someone, they eventually youtube the ending or go read it somewhere else, effectively destroying the whole point of the ending.

(Never mind, I misread your post.)

Though in regards to Ending D, it's arguably more to do with the execution rather than the surprise. Just knowing the game
deletes your save
doesn't provide much of the context that makes it meaningful. Though I could be biased due to being spoiled on it when I first played the game as well...

You can back it up to a usb drive before you do it if you want. But you get a special title screen and system data save if you let it happen.

Agreed. It's all in the execution. It's also not like the game doesn't explicitly tell you what's going to happen, and warn you. The actual things you must do to confirm and the way it visualizes the whole thing are amazing though.

Holy shit, I didn't know about the PSN status stuff. Possibly because I have no friends :p

Despite thinking it'd be the jankiest part of the game, I actually enjoyed the combat the most. Has a nice feel to it. Funniest thing about htat is that it's probably the one part of the game that will be completely tossed into the trashcan by Platinum Games, who's involvement is what made me play the game in the first place!

You're blowing my mind here, sir

I thought combat was enjoyable, too. There was awesome variety. I think the jank is sometimes overstated. It was never a hindrance. Combat was responsive and worked the way you wanted it to. It just looked lackluster. That doesn't mean that it can't be better. We have the studio to handle this part so it'll be better for sure.

But yeah, I wonder what sidequests you did. The tavern and lighthouse sidequests are very memorable for the right reasons.

Copying your save file somewhere else before getting
ending D is some week shit. It loses all meaning if you're not willing to do the sacrifice

I liked most of the sidequests. The banter you got after completing them was so good. Compared to fully upgrading all your weapons for the platinum, whatever grinding you had to do was pretty much insignificant. The only ones that were a pain in the ass were the ones that required gardening, and the fragile deliveries. If you did them blind, the fishing quests were probably a pain too, but with a guide they were not too bad

I agree, there is a meaning as to why it happens and that is what gives the impact.

However, many people will only read what the game actually does and ignore the whole context. So, this causes the person to love the complete experience of what is the ending D, which is a shame.

I guess it's kind of interesting to contrast something like Nier where the simplicity and weight of the combat blends well with the variety over quality approach (intentional or otherwise) of most of the gameplay, whereas something like Witcher 3 is supported by a more complex and layered system throughout but the combat usually feels spammy and like you're swinging and throwing stuff through empty space. Neither would be things I'd recommend for their combat :p

Well I didn't spoil myself on purpose, was looking for any secret weapons I might miss and that's the only "secret" gamefaqs had. :p

Yep that hit me hard once I noticed that... :X

"New Game +", more like "feel like an asshole" mode.

Anyway, this is actually pretty awesome, glad I stuck with it.

I've also found myself doing a bunch of quests LOL. This fucking game. What is it with this game.
