Fighting Games Weekly | July 27 - Aug 2 | Beta luck next time

There will be a fully free-to-play version of SFV within a year of the game's initial release. Probably LoL-style, with a rotation of free characters (maybe 4 at a time that changes every 2 weeks). Anybody wanna bet this won't happen?

Prolly. After discs stop printing and it's time to discount stuff, I'd bet a f2p version pops up, the original 16 become a bundle you can buy for cheaper (similar to LoL having their starter Champ bundle), etc.

Unless they can keep pushing the retail version as entry at that point, which seems quite silly.

I was going to answer this but enzo summed it up pretty nicely:

I'd bet against it considering how much they've played up "the only disc you need to own." You don't need to go fully free if you can get away with this much guaranteed income from the jump, the StarCraft method. Especially not in the first year because they'll still be making sales then. Kind of surprised everyone thinks the game will go the way of a struggling MMO in the first year.

Having a unique retail disc helps you a lot and changing it would be risky. First your return on investment is faster and helps you not rely on the F2P shitty economy. They won't need to make quick money and lock things behind a paywall to pay the development cost. Then not doing a Super Edition disc makes the first disc keeping its value, just like Nintendo games which are still at full price years after being released. Adding content to the game makes people also keep the disc, meaning there will be less used copies in stores. It will force newcomers to buy a new copy so why lower the price of the disc or do a F2P version?

A thing they could do is update the disc every two or three years. Keep the same name and price, the same disc, just add a discount code inside the box that gives you characters to download so it's more fair and balanced if you are late coming into the game as it removes the "I have 12 characters to buy".

I'd make an avatar bet or something, haha. Of course they'll sell as a full price game for a while, then lower the price gradually. Then, as Anne said, probably end up going f2p with the initial game with it's 16 characters being rebranded as the SFV starter pack.

Not saying it's a bad thing! Actually- I think it'd be successful and drive a pretty significant leap forward for fighting games.

This is definitely what will happen eventually and it's the best thing that could happen to SFV. Fighting games aren't really getting much easier to play so if Capcom lowers the monetary barrier to entry then we will get a larger player base. Whenever I play the Arc System games or USF4 now I miss how incredibly quickly I could find matches in vanilla SF4. Also, F2P SFV would probably fix the problem USF4 has now in that the lowest skill level player base is barely there.

Even if Ryu is the free character it's not like anything would change. 50% of people play Ryu anyway.

rip yams pretty much

rip dahbomb as well then lol.

Did any of you import Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax? If so, how is the netcode?

I'm asking because I'm on the verge of making a deal with an old fighting game friend. He's gonna buy me Dengeki Bunko if I swear on my honor to put at least 100 hours into it if I buy him SFV and he puts at least 100 hours into it.

All this shit is moot if the netcode is awful, but I have more hope for SFV than Dengeki.

Uh... 100 hours is a bit excessive to take for a bet if you aren't sure whether the game is worth it or not. I would shorten it to at least 10 hours. lol

The netcode is stellar at max quality connection. Anything else and it's pretty awful and you'll see netplayers begin to perform weird tactics to account for the netplay, such as 4AB on wakeup and lightning projectile nonsense.

I like anime fighters (ps2 GG, vanilla BB, BBCS), so 100 hours for a fighting game doesn't seem like a huge investment to me. I wasn't going to buy Dengeki Bunko on my own because no one I knew was going to play it. He's the one who offered to buy it for me. I knew he wasn't interested in SFV, though, so I jumped at the chance to at least get him to try it.

I won't hold him to the "100 hours" thing if he just absolutely hates Street Fighter, of course.

Thank you for the response though. I read in the Dengeki OT that there's literally no way to make a private lobby, though? Is this something that was addressed/patched later?

So what are the major PR events left until SF 5 is out? There's Tokyo Game Show and I assume they'll show something at the big Capcom Pro Tour event (I'm not calling it CPT...). So what's left?

There's 8 characters left to reveal. I'm guessing they're going to reveal 2 at TGS and another 2 at Capcom Pro Tour Event or maybe 1 per big event or something. Then reveal the rest and the future DLC character(s) a month or two before release.

There's also Paris Game Week and PSX.

I can see them doing something like:
-Sell disc and download versions of SFV for $60 for the first couple months.
-Price of both versions comes down to at least $40 by the time the game is 6 months old.
-In the fall/winter of 2016, they lower the price of the disc/download version of the game to $20 and re-brand it as the SFV starter pack. Simultaneously, they create a f2p version of the game with a small rotating roster of free to play characters. You can purchase/earn individual characters or buy the starter pack with all 16 of the introductory characters for $20 whenever you want.
-Maybe release a $60 disc of the game after all this where it's basically the original disc with the 16 characters plus a bunch of in-game currency so you can buy a bunch of characters and cosmetic stuff etc.

tl;dr: I bet they sell a ton of the copies of the game at $60 and then within a year or two transition to a f2p model similar to LoL.

The Hayabusa is dropped down in price from $200 to $165. That's only 15 more than the Kai.

But I play ibuki.

I think he was upset about getting hit by Ibuki's EX neckbreaker whenever he threw fireballs.

and then the wakeup ultra to finish him off when he kept throwing fireballs at close range.

I've been working on my fireball game the past couple of nights, and I find most players online have no idea when and where to throw fireballs.

As long as the game is selling good at full price they don't need a F2P version, but they could make one for certain markets (China in primis).

Why would you buy that stick over the Kai?
Teyah said there's almost a full frame less lag for input.

Hayabusa: +4.80ms
Kai: +15.10ms

Forget what I said. It was the Hori V4Pro that had the better input response. I'm dumb.

Edit: Don't forget what I said, the amazon listing is the Hori Pro Hayabusa. It's the next stick in the line. So it should still be good.

The most hatemail I ever got during the street fighter 4 series was when I played Ibuki. People absolutely loathe fighting her it seems ^.^;

Let's go Team ASS

Thinking about that team today it's actually pretty decent.

Yeah, I think the team would work. Build meter and gold armor up DHC storm to safety You have two really good hortizontal assist ( or OTG Sent punch/Sent Bombs). Even Point Sent with Gold Daggers would be great. You also get XF3 Sent/Arthur. Chips Ahoy!

I used Doom/Storm/Sent as my day1 team.

But Ibuki is the best.

I dont even go for vortex..because Im very inconsistent when I do. I mainly go for resets, resets, resets.

Since everyone plays Ken/Ryu it's fun to have a character who has a ton of options against fireball spam.

Its also fun when I manage to get dizzies when people dont know how to punish the cr.HK stun reset loop.
