Bloodborne Load Times are Getting Patched. Along with other performance optimisations

I honestly can't find that to be meaningful. It could not be there, and I wouldn't notice a difference. :/

I hope it gets added as a toggle for those who don't like it though.

It gives it a bit of a blurry effect to put in layman's terms. I didn't know what I was looking at but I noticed it in BB as well. I honestly thought it was my TV or something, as I don't remember that effect in the alpha/beta and I've changed TV's since then.

Now that I know what's causing it I feel better that it's not on my end, but I would really like to see it corrected if it's possible.

I also noticed the frame rate issues, but there's no way in hell I would have known what the real problem was- I didn't even know such a thing as frame pacing. This is the first I'm hearing of it.

If you don't like long load times, just don't die

Never heard of frame pacing before.

Edit: brief googling seems like it's more commonly a problem with multiple-GPU setups... Obviously not the case here. But frames

The obvious question is why didn't they just fix the load times before release?

They had to have known they were excessive and would annoy people...

Good point - to me the same applies to the loading screens being complete void of any interesting stuff to read...though these might be as they are because FROM always planned to have the loading screens be very short after the patch...?

Thought it was around 30? I timed it a couple of times during Patrick Klepek's livestream last night and I never got in the 40s.

It's less than 30 when warping back to Hunters Dream.

The loading times hurt worse than the deaths. I love this game, but this is a huge oversight.
I'm glad they're working on fixing it.

what's the best case scenario for a patch?

suppose the average load time is 45s, dropping it to 30s would be a substantial improvement but still far too long.

Why? Stuff like this should be fixed before the game is released.

I've been thinking about this recently and have come to the conclusion that Publishers might not really have that much choice. At this late stage, it's hard to put the release back, as millions of dollars worth of marketing will be out there doing it's thing. I think the plan was most likely to have the game go 'gold' 3 or 4 weeks before release so that the discs can be pressed, then they have 3 or 4 weeks to do their last minute optimisations and hopefully get the patch out for launch day. Not saying that's the right way of doing it, but when release dates have to be planned ahead due to the marketing, they'd be taking a hell of a risk delaying it.

When do you see this happening in the game?

I haven't gotten very far, but just in the first hour or so into the game I haven't noticed any frame stuttering or dips.

I'm curious to know what exactly it is and where exactly in the game is it really noticeable?

I have not noticed any dips either, but frame pacing is off everywhere in my opinion.

You see, with perfectly paced 30fps we already have to deal with the problem of "new frame, duplicate frame, new frame, duplicate frame" where our eyes track the repeated frames, and our brains have to adjust to the "tiny pauses" in between frames. I mean, some of us will perceive the duplicates as pauses, but if they're constantly displayed in a timely fashion every 33.3ms, our brains will eventually regard the experience as being acceptably "smooth." Now, when any pair of "frame + duplicate" remains on screen for considerably longer (or shorter) than 33.ms, the illusion of "smoothness" is broken, and there are those of us such as myself who will be extremely bothered by it. It can quite literally look like a "slide show" at times. Really.

Anyway... I just felt like sharing. :P

So sick of things not getting pushed out when they're actually ready.

When is a game ready? optimisation is a question of spending time. Maybe the loading issue can be improved upon, but it might need more research and some more testing. Would you want the game to be delayed for another 5 months (this is just an arbitrary number) just so a developer can improve factor X in their game? Most software is never 'finished'.

anyway; I hope FS can fix stuff, it's good that they already acknowledged this.

Hopefully my copy will arrive tomorrow.
I can't help but feel that the game was pushed out slightly earlier than FromSoft would of liked. For example, them loadscreens just seem unfinished. I can't really speak about performance but I know what I am buying into with these games. Looking forward to playing it!

What is frame-pacing?

The game is 30 frames per second, so every frame should be displayed for 1/30 of a second. If a frame is displayed for too long it will look like a micro stutter, or if a frame isn't displayed long enough, the NEXT frame will be on for too long, causing the same issue.

Basically all the frames should be displayed for the exact same amount of time to look smooth.

(From my admittedly weak understanding of it)

Oh okay. So is it a big deal in the game or hardly noticeable?

This and circle + L3 jump being omitted is really damn weird to me

The direct quotes from FROM make it sound like it's more of a longer term investigation than an immediate patch.

I honestly wouldn't expect to see anything for at least a few weeks.

Bad frame pacing makes the game look as if it stutters or drops frames often. It creates the illusion that the framerate is lower than it is.

It's not *too* bad in Bloodborne, but it's noticeable.

Oh, so it's not actually slower, it just appears to be slower. I'm assuming that means it doesn't affect gameplay or combat

Great! Hopefully in the four years it takes for me to be able to afford a PS4 and Bloodborne the game will be considerably better and cheaper than it is in its current state. Not to say it's bad or anything close to that right now, but I'm hoping to get a more finished product by the time I can play the game.

man so many people who can't deal with a little loading and I'm sitting here having a blast. Oh well I welcome the patch.

Let me put it this way: The load times are long enough for aliens to take a prolonged turn in STEAM, a game that got hit hard during the critical review for having too long a period of time during which the player is not doing anything but waiting.

Good to hear. Across all the reviews I read load times were the only persistent complaint. Does that mean patched BB will have no discernable flaws?

I was just looking through the "Show off your Bloodborne Hunter" thread and the amount of CA in this game makes me want to vomit in terror. Why do devs choose to continue to push this garbage on us??

Yes, frame times need to be improved if I'm ever to play (and enjoy) Bloodborne for more than 20-30min at a time. I don't know what it is about uneven frame times and eye fatigue accompanied by a slight headache, but I definitely felt it last night.

Here's hoping they'll manage to sort it out soon.

Yeah exactly, I've been put off of Dark Souls + Demon Souls because of frame rate on last gen.. Graphics have become less important for me as I get older but stable frame rate is a must in games for me.

The game is great but damn why didn't they allow fast travel from any lantern if they knew load times were going to be that long...? it simply baffles me.

Sad to hear about frame pace issues. Studio Japan's involvement in this kinda gave me hope that Bloodborne would be technically more competent than From's previous games (not talking about visual fidelity).

Well outside of load times and frame pacing, the performance is absolutely the stablest its ever been for a Souls game on console. Frame pacing is patch-able and seems like a minor fix from other games that have had it on PS4(like Diablo 3 and Need for speed rivals).

What's a bit more uncertain are the load times...but apparently those are reduced by 30 something percent with an SSD... (nice slayers avatar btw)
