I'm buying Bloodborne basically blind with barely seeing any media. Ever done this?

This seems like a recipe for disaster.

Yeah Bloodborne is probably going to be great to perfect, but IF IT WASN'T? The backlash and finger pointing would be devastating.

Your experience is not going to be ruined from watching a few trailers and gameplay videos, if it were so easily ruined then it probably wasn't that good to begin with.
 
You're in for a treat I'm sure, going in almost blind too (watched the official trailers) and the wait is harsh.
I used to do this more when I was younger, buying games based on how cool the cover was, never regretted it and I got to enjoy great games like Shinobi on PS2.
 
Hard to do it these days,especially when they release a new trailer and you see the posts saying "shit just got real","day one" or "amazing trailer"
and you´re like: "hnnng,fuck it..i need to watch this"

Did this with Red Dead Redemption. I have never been a fan of Westerns in general so I never bothered to do any research on it. I got drunk one night and made my GF drive me to the midnight release just because 'Rockstar'. She thought I was crazy, turns out I was a genius.
 
I recently did this for DA:I. I regret buying it. Played it for about 30 minutes. Sold a few weeks later after trying to play again.
 
I'm doing it, yeah. I found Dark Souls 2 to be pretty middling, compared to DS1, but some of it was my fault for eating up all of the pre-release media. I think going in truly blind for a Souls-ish game, Bloodborne in this case, is the best way to do it.

Can't wait.
 
Nearly all my DS and 3DS purchases were made blind, thanks to the fact I completely missed the train of Nintendo portables. The game that paid me the best for it was Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros.
 
I try to do this with most games these days, but sometimes you get spoiled on stuff by accidentally wandering into a thread. Either way, outside of the original trailer I haven't seen anything on Bloodborne so I'm pretty curious to see how it turns out.
 
I buy many of my 3DS games without watching footage because it usually already has a reputation of being a good game. I'm thinking Kid Icarus Uprising, A Link Between Worlds, Resident Evil Relevations, etc. I mean I saw screenshots here and there, but I never sought out previews or hands-on impressions. I only really do that for games where I'm on the fence, like Codename: STEAM.

Unless we're talking about day 1 purchases. I don't make those.
 
Buying a game off of "hype" alone and knowing nothing about the design, whether or not it appeals to you, whether or not it even maintains quality throughout the length of the game, etc, is basically gambling.

If you're comfortable with dropping $60 on something you might hate and regret immediately, go for it, champ. Just keep in mind that the point of trailers are to make the game look good, not show any of its flaws.
 
Yes. I can actually say this for every visual novel game I have. I mean I may have been aware of the general idea about the game but that's it.

Katawa Shoujo, 999, Ever 17, Saya no Uta, The White Chamber (point and click adventure), To the Moon (also an adventure game)

I haven't even seen a trailer. The only thing I've seen was some picture of a guy with a gun back when it was still called "Project Beast" and hadn't officially been revealed.

I've seen nothing else, zip, nadda and I can't wait to pick it up.

Never played one of the souls games either....am I doing it right GAF?
 
My goal is to do this for Zelda Wii U. I have confidence in the dev/pub and i'm a huge zelda fanboy, so any media I consume may just spoil a puzzle solution or story bit that might be better experienced fresh. Skyward sword spoiled tons of puzzle solutions and items, so i'm done w/ zelda trailers. Especially since this one is so different, I think going in wholly unprepared would be a realy treat.
 
I do it all the time.

If you kick around certain corners of GAF long enough (which doesn't take long at all) to find people who's likes resemble yours, you can cut through what could be just bandwagon and what might be up your alley.

This isn't a full-proof plan, however.

On my part, though, watching trailers and clips hasn't ever done much for me.
 
I bought dark souls for 360 a year after launch for 20 bucks not knowing a single thing about it. I remember passing it on the shelf for 6 months straight not sure and probably bought some shitty game instead. It ended up being my favorite game of all time. I hope bloodborne is good enough to take its place.
 
Occasionally, much less so now than when I was a kid obviously. Much less information available then. I bought PvZ: Garden Warfare without seeing anything (beyond a single PR render) of it last year, but bought it cos it was £25 at launch and I loved the idea. It ended up being one of my most played games of 2014.

And sometimes, I go against all of the media I've read that says a game is terrible and I buy it and love it anyway, like Bodycount!

having played less than 10 hours of souls games, I understand the very basics of what i'm getting here and I watched the trailer that had the co op where the two players were getting fucking DESTROYED and that made me think "yeah okay I want this"

Saw some screenshots to remind myself that I really want a game set to this atmosphere/mood but 1 trailer and like 3 screens is pretty good.

I tend to do this all the time with games though. if I dont know about the game i'll watch/research more but as soon as i'm convinced I want the thing I stop paying attention to all the stuff released for it until I get it in my hands

Hmmm, you should've tried DeSo or at least DaSo1 just incase the style game isn't for you. I don't like the term 'hardcore gamer', but you need to be able to persist and not give up easily when it gets punishing as it is very rewarding (the Souls games anyway).
 
Kinda did this with Destiny too, as a previous poster said. Wasn't worth it for me.

The alliteration in this title is amazing though lol.
 
This probably doesn't count but I had a successful media blackout for Mass Effect 2. Someone spoiled ME3's Javik for me but other than that I was blacked out on that one too. But I was already a Mass Effect fan before those games came out.
 
Depends what you mean by "barely seeing any media." I bought Danganronpa 1 and 2 because of the few impressions I read and the concept, while avoiding pretty much everything about the games themselves. I'll be doing the same for Danganronpa: Another Episode.

I do this with a lot of games.

I don't shun games that are hard play. I'm having a ton of fun with Hotline Miami 2 for instance. If the game is good, and fun to play....and most importantly rewarding? Then persistence is the name of the game.

From Software hasn't failed to deliver with the Souls games from what I can read and hear.
So i'm trusting that the gameplay is gonna be solid.
 
I haven't bought a game without some info since the 90s, just can't do a media/social blackout

Actually scratch that, I've done a decent job of avoiding Star Wars Episode 7 stuff
 
I did it for Bioshock: Infinite and Dark Souls 2. I just watched the "launch trailer" for Bloodborne so I guess I blew it.
 
Yeah, when i was a kid did this all the time, had big surprises, had not so hot ones too.
EDIT. Clicked too soo on the reply button. So i felt the need to have a surprise again you know, so i'm buying purely off hype, even not playing any Souls series before
 
Post-internet? Never. Never ever ever. I don't even believe in media blackouts. Fuck that. Short of story spoilers, I need to see everything to make sure when I DO buy something, I don't regret it.

And, I rarely do.
 
I kinda did that with Dragon Age Inquisition. All I knew about it was that it won GotY a lot of place, it apparently was very progressive with the types of characters portrayed, and that it was only $30 during that PSN sale lol.

My first Dragon Age game too. I like it!
