Pillars of Eternity Beta - Torment: Tides of the Beetles

I think I'm gonna go Savannah human duel wielding stilettos rogue for high DT negation and high attack speed so they can have relatively good armor for defense, maybe scale but more likely leather.

You honestly should go Hearth Orlan because their racial passive (Minor Threat) is better for Rogues.

Minor Threat: "When attacking any target that is also being targeted by a teammate, Hearth Orlans convert some of their Hits into Crits."

...that is if you want to go the min/max route but not a dealbreaker if you go human.

Getting hyped. The OT is gonna be a glorious stream of joy.

I wish I had managed to properly play BG2 before this, though.

Haven't done math in years but isn't 25% of base damage - 25% of DR the same as 25% of damage - DR anyway? 4.9 is 25% of 29.7(technically, 4.925 is, but I assume it rounds down), which means it's just 25% of what you hit for after all modifiers/DR.

It is, but when the DR values for the two types are different - eg. if Crush DR was 4 but Shock DR was 5, then your version no longer applies, as 25% of 5 is 1.25, not 1.

In this image, I am attacking a unit with Plate armor. The Crush DR is 12, but the Shock DR is 6. For the proc, 25% of 6 is used. So it becomes 23.1 * 0.25 - 6 * 0.25 = 4.275 (currently the combat log rounds the numbers, but the game tracks the float)

So I read that there's no Rogue companion, but will any of the other companions be able to pick high level locks or do I have to focus on that for my main character if I want to unlock every chest and hidden door?

Someone mentioned this earlier in the thread, but there's actually a skill you can invest in that would allow lock picking. Its not all inclusive to Rogues.

That comes under the mechanics skill which isn't exclusive to rogues. You can pick it up on a Wizard if you liked.

Oh I see thanks, didn't know there was more than one type of DR since the log only shows DR, you might have mentionned it in the video but I skipped the end ^^. How do you tell what's the DR for other dmg types though since it's not displayed in the combat log, can you check mobs stats somehow? Is it related to a skill/stat(iirc Lore does something like that, does it show detailed monster stats with a high lore rating?).

Btw unrelated mechanics question, do the summons that the Chanter create last until the end of the fight, or do they have a set duration during a fight. I know they disapear at the end regardless, but basically would they also disapear if the fight takes too long or are they permanent once summoned? And can you summon duplicates? Or a different type at the same time? Or is it like only one active summon spell at a time?

In the Chanter video that was linked a while ago, a few of the summons were shown but the fights were super short and they were only summoned one at a time(I mean technicaly there's some spells that are more than one summon at once, but I meant like a
drake+ogres+wurm+ghost
type of thing).

You'll know what damage type your attack is by reading the item/spell/ability description but some of it you'll have to work out on your own, like I did in the video.

I have never had a fight go long enough to be able to use two incantations, because they are currently bugged and have a long delay before you start generating phrases again after using an invocation. I think they last for the duration of the encounter.

Make sure you disarm the trap though, as they are incredibly lethal in this game. :(

Oh noes, I'll keep that in mind! I tend to forget the traps in my greed for loot >>.

I was so sure I'd role Chanter until I saw Sensuki's crazy Rogue build vids. That One Musketeer looks so badass though and since no companion is a Rogue it's hard to pass that up.

What vid is this? I'm curious on seeing the different classes in action and I usually lean towards Rogues :d.

Yeah I'm not min maxing completely. I really like the look of Savannah humans as well. But Orlans are pretty sweet too. Something to think about. I'm sure Orlans are interesting to RP as well.

Edit: I wonder if Minor Threat makes up for the fact that Orlans have reduced Might. Instead of being have to have 20 Might with a Human, thus +30% damage, I only be able to have 18 Might as an Orlan or +24% damage. And here I said wasn't really min-maxing.

Orlans are a pretty interesting race TBH. They are the shortest of all races and I believe the most..."hairiest" LOL. I honestly believe Obsidian were inspiried by Hobbits when they created Orlans. However there are some differences culturally. There is a lot of unjust prejudice against Orlans. Some see them as savages and untrusthworthy because of their "look" (hairy and short, two-toned, hairy pointed ears), and actually the rural Orlans can indeed be bloodthirsty savages so... yea lol. They would be extremely interesting to RP if I might add. One thing that intrigues me is that they are known for their mental intensity which is often associated with being a cipher. That's something I want to learn more about!

Edit: Just saw your edit. I personally don't necessarily like picking a race just to be able to max a certain attribute. I look at the racial passives to see how that will complement my playstyle. For example, I'm planning to do a Fire Godlike Monk but it synergizes well, but I could do another godlike or race and still be effective. Going pure min/max just to pick a race to squeeze those 1-3 attribute points is pointless IMO. Go for what looks best and try to get a complenting racial passive along with it.

Fair points. I normally just go with what I like in the end, but it's easy to get into the minutia of it due to anticipation and nothing else to do.

I'm actually surprised no one has made a Web or Java based character creator sheet as these types of games often get something of the like it seems since people love to plan builds ahead of time. Though I guess most of the hardcore have the BB and just use the actual beta to do that. It would be handy to try out different builds and see how their stats work out with various talents and such.

That's a nice looking inventory screen. Not too much space though, I assume you can get containers to put more stuff in? I love hoarding shit.

There is Chest icon in the middle/bottom of the screen where you can dump everything into. I think the only limit is that you cannot access it in combat, only what's on your person can be, aside from armor and weapons(?). So yeah, you'll be able to hoard to your hearts content.

Do I require some form of Windows to run this game? I'd like to see it released on Steam or even Mac OS X... it looks like a great candidate for the new Steam machines.

Pretty sure its coming to Linux/SteamOS and Max OS X. It has system requirements for those OS listed on the game page.

Orlans remind me a bit of Dark Sun Halflings

Why does Forgotten Realms get to exist and Dark Sun and Planescape are dead?
Also add Spelljammer to that list.
Dark Sun is kind of obvious why; its just not what people think of when you say"D&D" and WotC are have a stick up their arse when it comes to putting something out that would resemble a commercial risk in any shape or form.

However Sigil was put in the 5e DMG, alongside rules for some of the planescape planes, so hopefully its not dead yet.
Also lots of super cute modrons.
Currently playing in a 5e Planescape game :D :D :D
