Pillars of Eternity Beta - Torment: Tides of the Beetles

I'm probably going to roll chanter for the same reasons
also I am very partial to bards
however I get this niggling feeling the chanter companion is going to have a lot going for her, so I may see how dual Chanters go.

I was so sure I'd role Chanter until I saw Sensuki's crazy Rogue build vids. That One Musketeer looks so badass though and since no companion is a Rogue it's hard to pass that up.

Sure they can, and some do, but they're not obligated to in the same way they are when a portion of their funding comes directly from backers. Plenty of KS devs have talked about this, I think Obsidian included, about how it places a certain extra degree of accountability because thousands of fans have given their money in support of this game before anything's been made. It's a fundamentally different dynamic between devs and fans than the normal development system.

As well Shadowrun is a good example of returning to KS for a second time. Return did pretty well and its KS campaign made 1.8 million, with an initial goal of 400k back in 2012. The standalone expansion Shadowrun HK make over 1.2 million with an initial goal of 100k in 2014. So despite coming back to the well 2 years later after successfully releasing their game and doing pretty well in sales they still managed to do quite well with the KS campaign.

I'm actually not aware of any devs doing it outside of crowd funded projects, but I still think that the practice could be implemented without the funding aspect. Yeah, a Kickstarter basically forces devs to be open and holds them accountable, but saying that you basically need the threat of a lawsuit over your head is a bit much. Double Fine was pretty much the first to open up the sausage factory that I'm aware of and it was pretty much unheard of at the time. Since then it's become far more common and refined. In the future I can see a more open development cycle being used even outside of crowd funded games. It just takes getting used to a different dynamic. They wont be obligated to do so, but they'll want to do so as it improves the end quality of the product. Time will tell.

As for Shadowrun, I'm not saying that returns to Kickstarter can't be successful. Hell, inXile did it with Torment without the first game even being out! I'm just not sold on it being a solid business tactic in the long run.

bard (party buffs, spells, probably the best "talker") and creature summoner rolled into one class makes chanter a no-brainer for me, really

btw, this post amused me

No Avellone in the video is making me scared :(

The role of Avellone in Pillars is relatively "minor". This is Josh's party.

Chris Avellone: "To be clear, and to give credit where credit is due on content contributions (I don’t want to steal anyone’s thunder), I wrote the first iterations of two companions (Durance and the Grieving Mother, who have been scaled down to about ¼ of what they were originally, and the Grieving Mother’s mental dungeon was excised as well, which was essentially a stealth adventure game inside her memories).

The final versions that are in the game are the province of other narrative designers, and I would be uncomfortable taking credit for the final implementation of the two characters. "

Chris Avellone: "I’ve been doing narrative fixes for the game now that it’s nearing the end of production along with reviewing other written support materials (the manual, for example, since I’ve written quite a few in the past). Feargus requested my assistance for two reasons – one, the narrative team did not have the time and two, because of my familiarity with the title. It has taken time – still, because this work involves bug-fixing and improving the core content of the game (as opposed to an Arcanum LP, which would not improve Eternity’s quality), it’s worthwhile, and it’s rare that we have an opportunity like this. Also, it has allowed us to look for things to add to the standards document for future projects (including further Eternity projects). I have still a good chunk more to do. I wouldn’t describe my role as minimal, but it’s been different than other RPGs at the studio. It usually is, from project to project.

I also did multiple critiques of the lore and the storyline(s) (including suggesting one framework for the story, along with other designers), but the storyline does not have many of my suggestions or contributions, it is largely the Creative Lead’s voice and direction guiding it, as it should be.

I had no involvement with the systems of the game beyond pushing that we create classes unique/native to the physics of the world (the Cipher), since a number of the classes that had been created up to that point were largely archetypes that could be found in other fantasy games. I felt strongly that if we could make a tie between the systems and lore, the game would be stronger for it.

That’s it. Still plenty to do. More to come when I have a breather. :)"

Just to get the expectations in check, he is not even Creative Lead (Fenstermaker is). Don't expect a Planescape.

(Chris is creative lead of other project, no idea if it will be a KS or a published funded stuff).

Check out this part of my chanter video where I summon
Drakes and Ogres
:)

What's up with the summons vanishing into thin air without even an animation once combat ends though... Seems weird to spend time gaining resources for those high level spells during battle only to have them disappear immediately. Like if you could summon at the start of battle or keep the summons around for a bit I would understand.

Well for short fights you'd use lower level summons, for boss fights and what not you'll probably get plenty of time to summon, doesn't even look particularily long to get the big summons. It actually kinda makes perfect sense to have to build ressources each fight to get access to stronger abilities.

Lack of animation does kinda look bad though, should have at least like puffs of smoke or whatever.

Rules question: How is the save threshold -- or DC, if you prefer -- calculated for debuffing spells?

They all seem to be fixed value reductions. I think most debuff spells inflict an affliction for their debuff, that then has it's own fixed effect, rather than a specific calculation on it's own.

Here is a list of Afflictions in the game and what skills/spells in the corresponding classes cause. http://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Affliction

Though some do have their own specific effect like this Chanter invocation which directly reduces DT by 20 points. http://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/And_Hel-Hyraf_Crashed_upon_the_Shield

Thanks for the link. Forgive me if I am misunderstanding your post, but I'm less interested in the damage or duration of the debuff effect than in the formula for determining whether the effect occurs in the first place. For example, if my chanter invokes "And Hel-Hyraf Crashed upon the Shield," what determines whether enemies in the AoE actually suffer the DT reduction? If they get a saving throw against the affliction, what number do they have to hit to succeed?

Ohh gotcha that would be affected by the Attack Resolution which has 4 outcomes: Miss/Graze/Hit/Crit that are determined by a 100 dice roll. This is based on the Attacker's Accuracy Stat vs the targets Defense, of which there are four types Reflex, Deflection, Fortitude and Will. Depending on how these two stats match up the chances of a Miss/Graze/Hit/Crit shift to be of greater or lesser likelihood. A graze results in -50% damage or duration, while a Crit is +50% in damage or duration. So for DT reduction it would still be -20 DT but the duration would be halved if it was Graze instead of a Hit and the duration would be doubled if it was a Crit. And that base duration of the spell would be based on your Attribute of which Intellect is the key one.

Awesome. Thanks. Incorporating status-effect defense into the basic accuracy/defense framework is an interesting way of ensuring that aggressive casters have to divide their ability points into at least two base stats like most other attackers. I may spend my first four hours with Eternity just staring at the character builder.

I want my digital copies now so I can chill in bed and read all the goodness on my tablet.

Yeah me too. I'm really hoping that if the material is actually available, they just give us the digital goodies now before the game is out. It'll be pretty helpful to read up on the world to get a better feel for character creation!

I did the minimum backing for this back in 11 or 12 or whenever this was announced: when does the game come out? Sorry if this was asked I haven't gotten an update from them in a little while and couldn't find it in OP

The game is cancelled and they ran away with the money.

March 26th.

Can we have a title change? Just scrap the beetles joke and put the release date in there.

That (11/03/2015) might be the date for the direct market release of the book in comics stores/specialty stores. As that's today, which is new comic book day and they tend to get trades etc. a couple of weeks before retailers like Amazon.

Have they said what the exclusive in game pet is? Hell or if MCA's novella is ready to go? Or Cooking with Tim? I'm starving over here.

I've already pre-ordered the guidebook from Amazon... I thought about cancelling and getting it from Dark Horse, but shipping to Canada from their store ranges from $14(for 20-30 business day delivery) to $36(for 2-8 business day delivery).

Hopefully the ship date will be updated on Amazon to match Dark Horse's "new" release date. Having it before the game comes out would be lovely.

I pre-ordered it from Amazon but I might change it to Dark Horse if I can get it early. The only thing is that it is cheaper at Amazon and I get free shipping.

Is there a digital edition of the book? I would love to have it on my tablet.

But it will go on sale for those who didn't back it right? Right!?

This is pretty awesome.

The naming of them is kind of confusing. My $50 Digital tier gets the Almanac and Collectors book, but not the Strategy Guide which is for $80 and up backers. But the books for sale separately are called the Guidebook and Prima Game Guide. So is the Guidebook the Alamanac or Collectors book or something different? Obviously the Prima is the Strategy Guide.

Dark Horse Guidebook Volume One = Collector's Book
Prima Guide = Strategy Guide
Almanac = 35 page bonus goodie for fans, not sold separately as a product

A buddy of mine is flying to New York tomorrow. Where should he be looking for the guidebook? Comic stores? Book stores (what's left of them)? Any chance Prima's stategy guide becomes available in the next seven days? :P

Dang it, I still can't decide which class I want to pick. I think it's between the Cipher, Chanter or Rogue... I have a feeling I'm going to be doing a lot of replays of the game.

I'd suggest reading the "description" each class, it gives a much better taste for the flavour of each class, and the story aspect.
For example Chanters are often seen as teachers or lore-keeper and are very traditional.
Ciphers are new-age outcast ESPers that everyone is a bit in the dark about, including ciphers themselves.

Rogues are kinda jerks.

Edit: On a completely unrelated note I want a gif of the Con-man pitch where the Obsidian logo is super imposed Alan Tudyks head, and instead of "networks" its "AAA publishers"

I think I'm gonna go Savannah human duel wielding stilettos rogue for high DT negation and high attack speed so they can have relatively good armor for defense, maybe scale but more likely leather.
