Pillars of Eternity Beta - Torment: Tides of the Beetles

Not open for further replies.
Going to record a video later today. It will be about the world of Pillars of Eternity and discussing the notable locations throughout the game. I will explain the meaning behind confusing names in the game like "Glanfathan", "Dyrwoodan", "Enwithan", and etc. etc.

It's basically an introduction to the setting of Pillars of Eternity. I'll try to keep it kind of short. I did record my first take, but I had technical issues and it ran too long and I rambled a bit too much. So hopefully my second take goes well. Hope you guys enjoy it.

If u want to check out some other videos I made, go here:

On another note, seems like we're discussing companions.

As you might have guessed, my favorite companion of all time is Garrus Calibratin' Vakarian. But, Aloth Corviser seems so intriguing. I love his character portrait. Honestly, it's simply perfect IMO. To top it off, he's witty, funny, and has an amazing voice like my boy Garrus. He's also old (62 years old) but he's a Wood Elf so I guess it doesn't mean much since they live longer, but anyway. Aloth is my top companion. Then follows Pallegina because she looks so beautiful and like that she's snappy! I really like her eyes and her feathers. She's Vailian too so even more "sophisticated" :))

Looking forward to it, TrueManace. If you can, bring up the picture of the map when you talk about a specific place / region, so people get a a better sense where it is located in the world.

Seeing as only 3 classes are not covered by companions, what classes are people going for in conjunction with that?

I usually play a rogue and it would work out in this situation but rogues seem kinda whack in poe... I guess they get consistent sneak attacks but I've heard they are boring. Might just say fuck it and do a cipher. Maybe parties can work with two of the same class.

I definitely think on some you can double up pretty ok
especially with the options for class diversity being really good for some classes
rogue doesn't really fall into this category

I can't pass up locked chests, so I have to play a rogue. It's just the way it goes.
The Mechanics Stat (Which is unlocking stuff and detecting traps) is independent of class. Rogue and Chanter get one point of it at level 1, but thats the only association to class it has.

So feel free to play any class you want!

Would really love to tackle a new meaty rpg but I feel like I'm going to have to spend hours reading up on game mechanics and lore on wikis to be able to actually enjoy the game.

I know. But I'll be damned if I play a wizard who is also good at fighting, picking locks and charming the ladies. Who am I, Patrick Rothfuss???

I find it best going in blind to be honest. Play through first with no knowledge and no research. On a second playthrough is when you can research all the ins and outs of every system. It's what I do with the Souls games and I find it works out great. Half the fun is figuring stuff out for yourself and not ruining the experience with wikis and walkthroughs.

And end up with a character that has boring skills or boring playstyle? No thanks. Combat and fun skills are important to me and from the little I've seen it definitely feels like I have to make an effort to make the combat fun for myself here.

Would also hate to level up some stats/skills and then realize all those points were wasted.

Should get yourself a steam account with the backers beta so you can try it out. I think they have taken the boring classes from the IE games and did everything to make them more engaging.

Failing that, roll a wizard. :E

Been a while since I've played an RTwP RPG and I haven't really read anything on PoE, is it possible to control only the main character in battles? Is there an AI option for your party members? Or at least something like FFXII's gambit system? Never really got into the whole RTwP gameplay so I'm probably gonna play on a low difficulty level.

From what I have heard, party AI is minimal so you'll need to control everybody. At the PAX East panel, one of the designers mentioned it being something they would like to improve via patches/expansions/sequels. They did say you can build your team with more passive abilities to make them require less micromanagement though.

Well 3 classes not covered by companions, but and correct me if I'm wrong, max party size is 6 anyway, so you'd be sitting 3companions out most of the time, so really any class is fine without necessarily having doubles. And even then doubles wouldn't be much of an issue since the weapon skills seem to be generalized to multiple weapon types and such, so if you make say 2 paladins(cause really, who doesn't want that Avian Godlike Paladin companion) you could still gear them fine.

I think I'm going Chanter cause they look way too fun. Btw one of the people who has beta access, do you have a chanter companion or is it possible to make one? I'm wondering if 2 chanters stack and to what extent. Like do the 2 chants stack unless they use the same verses? I would assume the passive endurance regen trait on chants doesn't stack so you don't have like a billion endurance regen with 6chanters but wondering if you can be affected by 2 different chants and gain all benefits.

Rest of the team we'll see, but I liked the Fighter, Paladin and Wizard companions they showed so I'd probably go with these at least, not sure about the Priest or the last spot.

There is a chanter companion, yes.

I know there's one in the end version, I meant is one playable in the beta client to test chant stacking. Basically, are chants just considered chants(which probably would make them non stackable) or are chants considered just the phrases currently playing, which would make them stackable as long as they're different phrases. The end result being, would I be able to run the chanter companion with a chanter main without stacking issues or not.

I can't wait for this game but I have a few questions hopefully you guys can help.
First would be can you find spells in the world and write them to a grimoire like the scrolls in BG?
The stat rolling can you get 18/00 or any variation of 18/**?
And finally do you have any advice for someone rolling wizard as their main character. I've only gone fighter in my many playthroughs of BG1/2 and currently I'm doing a wizard slayer playthrough in 2 so I'm not very familiar at all with mechanics and stats entirely for an intellect(?) based class.
Anyway I'll try to look some of this stuff up but can't wait for this game it will be great!

1. I think you can.
2. It's more the newer D&D games. You don't roll stats.
3. Focus on damage spells. Wizards in PoE are there to dish out damage.

You can find other grimoires and learn spells from them for some nominal copper fee, but I don't think there are just individual spell scrolls out and about you can learn from like BG. As well you can have multiple grimoires equipped, and will likely wish to due to the fact that you can only have 4 spells of each level equipped to it at a time but will likely have several more than that available to you.

Stats are pretty straight forward, no 18/00, or anything like that. There's no rolling and depending on your class there will be three highlighted stats as the recommended important stats to invest in. That said each stat explicitly states what it does and how your various point distributions affect things so it's pretty easy to figure out where you should be putting your points, depending on how you want your character to function. Each stat has a baseline of 10, any points added or removed will incur bonuses or penalties in certain areas. They made the attributes system to allow for more uncommon builds and shake up perceptions of stats for certain classes. So for a Wizard, depending on the kind you like to play, putting a lot of points into Might, even more than in Intellect, will dramatically affect the raw damage of your spells.

So for a Wizard having 15 points in Might will net you +15% Damage and Healing along with +10% Fortitude. While 13 points in Intellect will grant you +18% AoE of spells, +15% spell duration and +6 Will. With then only 9 points in Resolve will incur a -6% in Concentration, -1 Deflection and -2 Will. Here is the stat sheet of the Backer Beta prefab Wizard in our very own TrueMenace's mechanics video where he goes through pretty much the whole glossary of combat mechanics in the game.

managed to stay pretty blind to everything so i can just dive in when the game drops - but i have a quick question:

is anything in this game procedurally generated? or do we get hand crafted dungeons/maps?

I don't think there's any procedural generation in PoE. At least none that I know of. Certainly not the maps.

I wish they would've sent the collector's boxes without the game out to people already. Or that the hardback guidebook was already available. Immersing myself in the lore would make the wait bearable.

You'll also have to be the best musican that ever lived ever. And probably have sex with a goddess or something. And become a ninja monk.

Looks like youll need a multiclass mod.

That's what they are going to do, despite having to spend extra money. After that, they will ship the game disc separately. They had a poll about this on their forum.

From what I've seen, drops from normal enemies and a bunch of the Stronghold events are randomized. But they're still randomized from pre-set stuff which is designed. Maybe there's procedural generation for some of the equipment stats, I'm not sure, but yeah so far it looks really minimal.

Why can't we pretend this game doesn't exist for 3 more weeks so I don't have to deal with these awesome gameplay videos until release? D:

Battle interface looks a lot nicer, game looks a lot more refined.

I know. But I'll be damned if I play a wizard who is also good at fighting, picking locks and charming the ladies. Who am I, Patrick Rothfuss???

Isn't Kvothe a ginger though, it balances out.

Also are we all deluding our selves into thinking we won't reroll 20 times before finishing the game?

So is anyone else conflicted whether to play this or Bloodborne first? Surely I'm not alone here. They both look so good!

I'm in the same boat - I feel like Bloodborne may get the nod because I want to be part of the cultural zeitgeist of discovering the game with everyone else. Also, will be nice to play online with other noobs.

Having said that, I think I'm going to enjoy PoE more. Really in the mood for some exploration...

Oh I definitely will be referencing the map during the video!

I know, Laba-san. I just wish the goods were already on the way and I could get my hands on them a week or two before the 26th. :)

Well, at least there's auto leveling, amirite.
Get rekt, Bethesda.

Bought a ps4 last year to play one game... then I won't even play that one game on release, because pillars. Fucking console exclusives.

Teach the children to make good games!

Yeah, that's not going to be happening either, unfortunately.

After failing repeatedly trying to get into teaching, I'm finally going back and redirecting my life down the path I should have taken over a decade ago.
Darn have I ever been missing out, though.

That's a bummer, I love controlling just a single character in party-based RPGs. Even better if that one character is the one I created myself, really adds to the feeling that I am that guy, traveling with a bunch of other people.

Glad to hear I can go for a less micromanaging-heavy playstyle, at least.

Fuck them indeed. From should focus on the path to gold and happiness aka multiplatform.

My first time attempting to play through Icewind Dale, I was playing with just 1 character - a Fighter.

Made it about half-way through before my lack of a magic-user caught up to me with the increase in Physical-resistant creatures.

Super Important Question: Is this game available for pre-loading via Steam? I'll be without reliable internet between March 23rd & April 4th :/

Edit: fuck yeah, guess i'm going PoE over BB

We plan on letting the game preload on Steam.

Well if we go PoE later, we may have a couple post-release patches to polish things up.

I'd hate for yet another PC gaming thread to devolve into "fuck console exclusives" fanboyism, but FYI Sony Japan is co-developing.
