Question for comic fans... Why does Black Panther wear the mask? Beyond it just looking cool I mean. Is it a tradition for people not to look at the king's face or something?

Part of the Black Panther ensemble. Black Panther is the ruler of Wakanda. Also suit is laced with Vibranium so helps protect him in combat.

Black Panther is an asshole for what he did to Narmor.
Nah, Namor was waaaayyyyy past fuckboy status. Even Doom's sidekick was laughing at him

Ceremonial

Well I meant is there a particular Priest comic? I know in comics you have a bunch of trades and graphic novels.

Black Panther The Client 2001

It's been said before in some form or another, but everyone repeating that old line about Rocket and Groot in Guardians...

...a walking tree and a talking raccoon aint got shit on how sci-fi a technologically advanced utopia, entirely populated with and ruled by Black people, is going to seem to large swaths of this country.

I don't know if Black Panther is going to be a game changer, but the presentation of a reality in which Black people never needed white people, and in fact, have succeeded them in almost every imaginable way is going to touch people in parts of their brain they didn't even know could fire synapses. It's gonna be those parts of the brain that get them in trouble without even really understanding the hows & whys of it.

This right here is why Black Panther is my most anticipated Marvel film right now. I hope Marvel plays Wakanda exactly as you describe, because the meltdowns will be glorious.

I would really like to get into the Black Panther comics. Which series should I read?

I've never read any Black Panther comics. Any specific story arcs people can recommend?

I need to read some more Black Panther. I just got a couple of old issues that had him fighting the White Supremacists. That shit was corny. Slayven, you said I should read Priest next right? Which one should I start out with or should I just roll a die?

It's a Marvel movie. After it releases, I won't be surprised at all when we've completely forgotten the idea that its content could be the slightest bit innovative or controversial. I'd expect Wakanda to be about as memorably detailed as Asgard, maybe even taking a backseat to somewhere else.

I'm pretty excited about this one as BP is all kinda of badass. I'm just hoping they can successfully weave him into the Avengers arc without feeling shoehorned in and disingenuous.

Superhero movies set black action actors back like thirty years. Before they took over we had Passenger 57, Bad Boys, Independence Day, Man on Fire, etc. Now that the super heroes rule all action movies we ain't got shit. There's always a huge controversy if you cast a black actor in these things. I'd be surprised if Panther isn't ignored entirely.

You're an extreme kind of guy, it seems like.

Don't think the movie will be too controversial b/c its about a black superhero. It's not super-common but it's not unprecedented, or do people forget about Hancock, Blade, Spawn etc? It'll be more controversial if it's actually a crap film which I doubt, I mean the bar isn't too high. Marvel mostly does popcorn fodder (don't mean that in a bad way). A few steps up from Transformers but in the same ballpark.

Marvel won't want to ruin their streak of wins by jeopardizing one film, especially this one. Backlash would be huge and conspiracy theorists would never shut up.

How is Blade a superhero when he kills without mercy? There are other movies where we have people doing the same thing but we don't call them superhero movies. Why is Blade special?

This will be the first Black superhero film since Catwoman, right? I think Black Panther will have big implications for all Blockbuster movies. Hollywood will be a lot less scared of casting African Americans.

They weren't scared to cast a black person to play the human torch.(A white character)...

Didn't the only black dude in that movie get kicked down a hole? wtf are you talking about...
Xerxes isn't black? The persians looked frightening and powerful.
To be honest, while it was the movie that first came to mind and the one I had in mind while writing my post, upon closer thinking I can't seem to think a really positive portrayal of a Black King and/or Kingdom. So I retract my comment and hope BP fixes that.
Ahasverus, what do you have to say for yourself?
That I'm human and am wrong haha.

yes.

edit: but just think if a lot more people are wrong like you, and think "oh, there have been movies with positive portrayals of African kingdoms, this is no big deal" in addition to the ones who think "oh who needs this crap anyway?" that there is a lot of resistance to getting something like that even close to made.

I think Black Panther will be a fine movie.

I'm pretty sure it's not going to be half as controversial or mind-blowing or game-changing as you imagine it will be.

Will they give him a wise-cracking white sidekick?

Or will they have a rookie white journalist following him around as he's just an all-around badass? What if Black Panther is a found-footage/mockumentary type joint.

King Jaffe Joffer says hello from his royal palace in Zamunda.

The salt will flow like an infected wound, but what only matters is that it makes money.

The salt will flow on release day. Oh, how it will flow.

That's the outside of fox news and the GOP headquarters

So are you guys excited for the movie? Or just at the thought of it making your political opponents angry?

BOTH. As a non-white and non-american is like watch a freakshow everytime one of those right wing nuts spews it's bullshit.

You're giving too much weight to comic books.

youre in a super hero comic book movie thread where we are talking about super hero comic book movies and how it might affect the media and bitter people on twitter.... This is not the "comics will change the world" thread.

did you take a wrong turn somewhere?

Generic in what way?

and while you see stepping stone I see a story about a character in a much lager world full of interesting characters.

Generic as in all the heroes so far as essentially the same person. I don't know the difference between Star Lord and Captain America. What about Thor and Captain America? Sure, they're from different places but their personalities are the same: awkward, lovable, charismatic, charming. None of these characters have any real faults. The only ones that seem to have any aren't really explored. Tony gets the most exposure and they swept Bruce Banner under the big green and mean rug. Not to mention each movie follows the same formula. I just hope after Ultron and the inevitable shake-up the heroes will be different.

Why does every hero need to be funny to the audience? Because it works. It works on audiences and laughter allows you to forget legit issues because it was fun. This also makes the heroes the same. You can be from Asgard, USA, WW2 era, a big green monster, but you're still the same. I think the only "heroes" that are different are Black Widow and Hawk Eye but they never did anything with those two.

Stepping stones are OK in certain situations. If every movie is a stepping stone then you're just waiting for the big pay off but it will never arrive. What happens after Infinity Wars? Oh right... more Marvel movies. This, even if you don't notice it, lowers the quality of each film.

No one remembers Hancock, by far and away the most successful, and also the most recent, black superhero film that no one has mentioned once in this thread when bringing up past superhero movies starring a black lead?

-Released 2008
-Budget $150M
-Box Office $624M

The article seems to be referencing to other character traits, like power and social importance.

No reason to get all uppity in hurr. If the movie is done well and the character(s) are interesting, it will be a success. The hero's background will mean jack if the movie is a turd.

Read through the first 10-20 posts again and see what people were talking about.

He learned humanity in the heartland, he was this close to saying "hookem horns".

bullshit and you know it, Thor loves humanity cause of his mama....and smangin on jane foster for a while...but that was nothin compared to Zephyr.

The Golden Age Broxton OK shit is too recent to define the character.

He just did what needed to be done. Black Panther couldn't even pull the trigger.

You're conveniently ignoring the whole Cabal part and the enjoyment of killing people thereafter...

Or alternatively the fact he sunk Wakanda when had the Phoenix force.

Or alternatively having Thanos and goons destroy Wakanda again.

But yea T'Challa's the asshole tho lol.
