There are superheroes like Captain America, Batman, Green Arrow, Superman, Wolverine, Iron-Man...Hulk.

And then there is Black Panther.

He isn't a science experiment. He isn't a Super Soldier. He isn't an X-Man. He is no Billionaire Playboy. He is no Alien.

He is a King.

King T'Challa of Wakanda.

A man who pours hot wax on his enemies and stamps regal authority.

And he isn't no clichéd White man nor is he a coloured man living in some adopted nation. He is T'Challa. He is the king of the world's most technologically advanced nation. He is a man who is well versed in numerous languages. He is sound in his arguments and boasts superior intelligence to his peers. He is an alumni of the world's most prestigious universities and leader of the Panther clan.

He is Black Panther. He is no loony superhero with a vengeance or a twisted definition of justice wearing tights and prancing around running away from authorities. He is a king. And people often forget this

The Black Panther comics are very gritty in the manner that they are political and social in nature. They deal with the issues of inequality, rights of the commonwealth and other matters that concern the people. It is semi noir in nature and intelligently written.

He is uncompromising in his values. He is a man who is all about staying true to his values and ethics. He is focused, resolute and unwavering.

He is often unrestrained when he puts his mind to something. He never issues an apology for controversial decisions that need to be taken in times of turmoil. He looks to the greater good, always counting potential casualty.

Such a hero...a king of an African nation unspoilt by any invasion from the west, a man whose nation stands on its own feet with no aid from any outside source. A hero who needn't run away or hide from any authority; a man who isn't an alien to earth, a man who is someone from amongst us yet superior.

Will be interesting to see how folks deal with a hero that isn't about American exceptionalism

This will be the first Black superhero film since Catwoman, right? I think Black Panther will have big implications for all Blockbuster movies. Hollywood will be a lot less scared of casting African Americans.

Was Hulk even a hero? He's more like the star of his own disaster films.

I remember growing up and hearing how africa was nothing but mud huts and watering holes, so it will be interesting to see all of the people who can't handle the imagery of Wakanda or a superhero like Panther.

What about the Blade films?

These were hugely popular.

I don't think Black Panther will be a game changer to that big a degree since people will be assholes before it comes out, during its release, and afterwards.

Just look at the reaction to the Star Wars trailer and there being a black guy as one of the leads. Like, the fuck?

The salt will flow like an infected wound, but what only matters is that it makes money.

I do hope that films like Black Panther and Star Wars work toward allowing minorities to play roles in big budget films that aren't just for comedic value or that involve slavery or crime.

Marvel movies are utter dogshit but I'll be seeing this one just on principle of it having a black cast.

Will be interesting to see how Hollywood deals with that or if they just don't and make him about American exceptionalism anyway.

Goddamnit

It's been said before in some form or another, but everyone repeating that old line about Rocket and Groot in Guardians...

...a walking tree and a talking raccoon aint got shit on how sci-fi a technologically advanced utopia, entirely populated with and ruled by Black people, is going to seem to large swaths of this country.

I don't know if Black Panther is going to be a game changer, but the presentation of a reality in which Black people never needed white people, and in fact, have succeeded them in almost every imaginable way is going to touch people in parts of their brain they didn't even know could fire synapses. It's gonna be those parts of the brain that get them in trouble without even really understanding the hows & whys of it.

That is, depending on whether Marvel actually takes it that far.

It's possible the reaction to the movie could be more entertaining/illuminating than the movie itself, and that's taking into account the possibility the movie WILL be well made.

I am pleased.

Black Panther is going to make people freak the fuck out, and I am going to savor every delicious tear.

Hmm...I'm now salivating for the dumbass tweets and racist thinkpieces this movie will incite

Possible? The fallout from this will be more entertaining than anything Marvel Studios could possibly churn out.

Posts like that is why i still enjoy you even though we have our differences.

It's wierd how it took this long to get another Black superhero film when we got a shit ton of them in the late 90s/early 2000s. Blade, Spawn, Steel, Catwoman.

People will lose their minds to see folks with ceremonial headdresses programming quantum computers. That is what great abut Wakanda, they are so advanced but hold on to their culture and heritage above all else.

Can't image why Steel and Catwoman and Spawn didn't spin up into enormous black super hero media empires.

guilty and defensive as fuck. when they lash out, he puts them in the armbar of the Gods.

I feel people are really overestimating how much guilt people will feel over this. The backlash is gonna be for decidedly different reasons.

I'm sure the film will change the super hero film game just as much as the comic changed the super hero comic game.

It kind of did for Marvel. Since Chirs Priest, BP has been on the forefront of every big event. And I bet his success lead to Marvel giving Luke Cage a huge push.

Slayven (or anyone, but mostly Slayven) if I wanted to read a Black Panther arc because I've never read a comic with him in it at all which one should I grab?

I'll bet his paradise nation is super popular with all the other African countries.

What? Panther couldn't at least spring Mandela?

Oh god, please tell me there's not a comic book version of Crito about this exact thing.

edit: so I can pitch it obviously.

Well if you find Hudlin's arc, you should burn it.

People are gonna recommend Priest's run.

Jason Aaron's See Wakanda & Die

(pretty offended you asked Slayven & not me tbh)

He pours hot wax on his enemies but is not a loony superhero with a twisted definition of justice. Ok
Metaphorically, he always handles his enemies in a manner they handled him.
