Good article on why Black Panther could be a game changer for Superhero films.

Superhero movies set black action actors back like thirty years. Before they took over we had Passenger 57, Bad Boys, Independence Day, Man on Fire, etc. Now that the super heroes rule all action movies we ain't got shit. There's always a huge controversy if you cast a black actor in these things. I'd be surprised if Panther isn't ignored entirely.

..........he's getting his own movie in 2017.

And he has a major role in Cap 3.
 
If they can deal with the entrenched pervasive sexism of the 50's (?) in Agent Carter (yes TV but still), they can do racial issues in Black Panther.
 
i hope they go all the way with the political commentary on this. all black thriving civilization with no external influence. that shit is ripe for good material and would be the most meaningful of these marvel movies. hopefully they get some good writing on it.

even winter soldier's commentary kind of fell flat after what was promised with those initial 20 minutes. a plot questioning the ethics of US government and all of a sudden
we end up getting a talking computer with a cheesy german accent and Hydra was behind it all lol.
that shit disappointed the hell out of me. but the film itself was entertaining.

Thats if its a success it could flop. People might get sick of marvel movies by the time its out.
 
So if Black Panther is the KING, who is his enemy? Are we talking a rival leader (unlikely since he's KING), a terrorist faction, Western powers, Neo-Imperialism, aliens, Klaw, himself, what? Dude controls an army of the most elite and tech-savvy folks on the planet.

I don't get why people seemed to be more excited about the possible breakdown that this movie could create, and to be honest -- those posts from people hoping that a superheroes flick will make people feel like shit or guilty are weird as fuck.

Why would the average people freak out about him being a black superheroes? People loved Blade back then. I remember picking up a random hardcover compilation of BP when I was a kid at the store, it was amazing cool read that opened my eyes to white supremacist movements (the storyline involved a white power group of super-powered mercs that were hired i think to clean out a village because the ground underneath it had diamonds) anyhow it was a very interesting read, BP was incredibly cool with his jungle made out of technology and hardcore martial art skills. Really enjoyed it AND it was touching subjects I had never really heard of.

I was cheering for BP to kill those guys and save the villagers. It was an original super hero with fresh settings

Hoping that todays kids and parents viewers will feel bad and guilty because of this movie adaption is just bizarre as fuck. Get a grip, pls. This movie had a chance to open windows towards new discussion subjects for families after viewing it and it could lead to positive changes.

Making kids feeling like shit or guilty wont do any good.

As a kid, i never identified or related to the white power hired thugs or the group of super vilains he faced, those guys were hateful fucks and deserved to die.

I'm not sure why some gaffers in here are hoping that new fans will feel guilty? It's like saying that you hope that muslim peeps watching The Siege feel like shit because of the action of the bas guys

but the real question is will Marvel portray Black Panther like he should be portrayed. he comes close to rrivaling all the avengers in some aspects, so im curious to see if Marvel will depict him being this superior superhero. cant wait to see Fox News inevitably warp the film and its meaning once the first trailer drops tho; "Marvel promotes new film about a thug who wears all black and a hoodie going around and beating up job creators, where is Obamas outrage over the depiction of this violent African terrorist. "

I dont get offended at that, and I dont think the rest of the people you quoted are getting offended. I also don't think they are necessarily talking about ALL people being bothered or "salty" about this, just the kind that throws a fit when Boyega gets the lead on Star Wars, Johnny Storm is played by a fantastic actor or a Nordic god is black, this people's views on racial issues have no place in current society and the fact that this movie is getting made is in many ways an acknowledgement of this views becoming more backwards every day.

So you can use "political opponents" if you want, I found it funny and im gonna use it in the future.
 
Black Panther was literally nothing until exceptional Americans created him.

They do have a goldmine in him if they do him right though. He's too good of a character to waste by watering him down.

It's going to be interesting, for sure. BP being an MCU movie though, I'd have to think Marvel wouldn't shy away from the source material too much (unlike Fox and Dr. Doom).

The same concern(s) can also be said of the Wonder Woman movie and feminism.

I think my use of 'guilt' was incorrect. But we all know that there's gonna be some backlash coming. It'll be stuff like "Advanced African nation is such pandering BS" or "Totally implausible" or something of that ilk.

Why shouldn't a film like this touch on the effects of colonialism?

I never meant to refer to kids or new fans. But people use this kind of pop culture stuff as armament for their own demented notions and ideas. It's naive to think the same won't happen to Black Panther. Hell, we all know he's gonna be attacked just for the name, people will say he's being named after a terrorist group or something.

Isn't America fucked in the MCU? It's led by Nazis and has a super civil war on the horizon. Perfect time for a character like the Black Panther to step in.

I don't know if Black Panther is going to be a game changer, but the presentation of a reality in which Black people never needed white people, and in fact, have succeeded them in almost every imaginable way is going to touch people in parts of their brain they didn't even know could fire synapses. It's gonna be those parts of the brain that get them in trouble without even really understanding the hows & whys of it.

That is, depending on whether Marvel actually takes it that far.

It's possible the reaction to the movie could be more entertaining/illuminating than the movie itself, and that's taking into account the possibility the movie WILL be well made.

I need to read some more Black Panther. I just got a couple of old issues that had him fighting the White Supremacists. That shit was corny. Slayven, you said I should read Priest next right? Which one should I start out with or should I just roll a die?
