First The 90's Arcade Racer gameplay

It's kind of disappointing that they're trying to directly emulate games like daytona 2 and scud race rather than their spirit. I know that's the whole point of this project but I'd prefer it if they tried to make a game with an identity of it's own instead of pandering so strongly to my love of these games, because honestly it doesn't look nearly as much fun. It's too slow, the drifting looks too simplistic and controlled, and the courses aren't interesting beyond the nostalgic background elements. Visually it takes the 'blue skies' thing to an obnoxious extreme where everything is garish and hyper-saturated and the music is simply uninspired.

I'd be lying if I said this didn't tickle my nostalgia bone, but when I can play Daytona 2 and Scud race on my PC already thanks to emulation, this will be a hard sell.

Nicalis asked about Playstation interest for the games a while back so it's confirmed for those platform more-or-less.
I fully expect PS4/XBO announcements. Possibly Vita to.

Hopefully more ports don't push back the promised platforms though, like 1001 Spikes did.

The first gameplay almost two years after the Kickstarter was funded. Apparently the game's art, design and audio is pretty much done, but they had to scrap a lot of code last September. Also it's being published by Nicalis so that probably also adds to how long it'll be until it's actually released.

Little stuttering here and there and massive hitches in 00:32, 1:28, 1:58, 2:58 and 3:00. Unity engine, right?

The game looks lovely; it takes me back to when I worked at the local arcade. Years after its release, Daytona continued to be a top coin machine within our arcade. I was ok, my manager was ranked at the top among all racers.

As for this game, I hope it sees release this year. It looks to fill my need for that 90's nostalgia racer. I miss San Francisco Rush Racing...

Hmm graphically it looks decent but I do think the drifting looks a bit extreme and I say that as someone who thinks Outrun 2 is the greatest driving game of all time and that had the most generous drifting mechanic I know.

I was just gonna say that the drifting looks more like OR2 than Daytona, but color me hyped anyway. :)

Man, they nailed the look! BEAUTIFUL!!!

Hope they bring this over to PS3 because that's where my G27 is plugged in. For sure, I'm buying it on PC and Wii U.

Any developer who's promoting the 90's 60fps racing scene that is unmatched to this day in terms of pure adrenaline rush deserves all my support.

That city track is fucking incredible.

The visual design is neat, but the track itself is...well, it's not really anything. Mostly just a straight line with a few lethargic curves here and there. Watching the car casually slide through those shallow turns and straightaways for 3 minutes was sleep-inducing.

Looks like they created a bunch of trackside details and themes first and didn't really care about whether the course that connected them was actually fun to drive. I really want to support this but it seems like they're only latching on to the visual style and nothing else.

They sure did a good job hitting the references. The aquarium is 100% S.C.U.D. Race homage.

But the racing itself showed in the video is not as exciting, it seems to be some sort of nostalgia racer. Add a new category into the videogame vernacular XD

Not too impressed by this. It looks slow, the track is mostly straight and boring and the handling looks too stable and controlled. It looks the part on the surface, but I'll be truly surprised if they're able to pull off the nuanced car handling of the games they want to emulate. And for Christ's sake, change that stupid name.
I hate to be a downer but these were my thoughts exactly. The geometry of the courses doesn't look very challenging.

Kinda lookin more like Dreamcast Daytona rather than the Scud Race I was lead to believe it was...Still excited, tho.

Stealth edit: I do like the "wink-wink" Virtua Racing level tho!

Pretty much what I was thinking. Visuals look amazing. Wish more racers used non real life locations and went wild with their visuals. But man that first track looked ....boring to drive,

Wii U bought.

Now, here are some 60 FPS Daytona USA 2 Battle On The Edge / Power Edition videos.

Keep in mind folks, this was 1998.

It hurts that SEGA doesn't seem to care about this title. I didn't even know it existed until someone in a thread mentioned it, and I was completely shocked they'd made a second one.

At first it looked like Daytona and I was like "Okay. That's nice and all but I don't see what the big deal is." Then it suddenly became Virtua Racing and now I can't throw my money at it fast enough. Virtual Racing > Daytona. And that HD upgrade makes me so happy since I never owned the PS2 2600 rerelease of it. It just needs low poly cars to go with the low poly world.

This and Drift Stage are the best. Virtual Racing is my favorite non-kart racer, and I never even owned any Sega consoles until 2003. The Saturn version of VR is one of my pride and joys of my collection.

I just wish the Drift Stage demo had that awesome coastline level in it. All we ever see now is the night city. I guess I should bring that up in the DS thread though.

Sometimes I forget how amazing looks Daytona USA 2. It's has a insane stage design, very fun circuit layout and a incredible sense of speed. Great handling and drift model too.

When I see this videos, I can realize why SEGA doesn't port this baby to Dreamcast. It's criminal that GEN 7 doesn't get a port after the amazing Bluepoint's port of the first Daytona tho

Both of these games are using Model 3 arcade hardware, but Scud Race is using Model 3 step 1.5 while Daytona USA is using Model 3 step 2.1. Step 1.5 has a PPC CPU at 100MHz while Step 2.1 uses a PPC CPU at 166MHz. Daytona USA is using the highest end version of Model 3. The original Virtua Fighter 3 board uses the same hardware, but only a PPC CPU that runs at 66MHz.

The Sega Dreamcast was released in 1998 and in some ways was better than Model 3. The 200MHz Hitachi CPU was at least comparable to the PowerPC 603ev at 166MHz and the Dreamcast has more system RAM and video RAM than model 3, resulting in better looking textures and image quality. But I am not sure if it could produce as many polygons per second as Model 3. The few Model 3 ports that were released on the Dreamcast were not as good as their arcade counterparts, most notably Sega Rally 2 and VF3:TB.

Sega originally promised Scud Race on the Dreamcast, but sadly that port never came.

Daytona USA 2 came out at a point when arcades were nearly dead in most parts of the world, so it went by unnoticed. I was sad that Daytona USA 2: Power Edition was never released on home consoles. I understand that it partly has something to do with the Daytona USA rights, but still, they could release the game under the Sega Racing Classic brand like they did with Daytona USA 1.

why does this look 'unlcean' in 720p on YT o_O
Hyped for it regardless X3

If I were to hazard a guess, the fast speeds plus saturated colors is making Youtube's already atrocious 720p encode bitrate choke really hard.

It'd look a lot better if at 1080p (or beyond) on Youtube even if nothing was done except up-resizing the original footage. Not because you get more detail out of it, but because Youtube's 1080p encodes are a slightly less ridiculously low bitrate.

Same problem a lot of Sonic Generations videos have, but even Sonic Generations' saturated colors are generally limited to one or two tones per level, not wild red/green/blue all over the place.

edit: at 60fps pls

Watched the vid several times and I'm still on board like ladder shades and fanny packs but I'd like to see an additional option, and that would be the option to use some retro filters like scan lines ect. Otherwise hype as fuck.

oh wow I thought this was pretty much dead, trailer looks great actually, very daytona and some virtua racing thrown in

would kickstart a 90s rally racer when they're done with this

Man, that's a brilliant idea.

BTW, game looks awesome as it is. Hope the OST is decent.

Edit: Virtua Racing nod was too brilliant to be true. I can't believe how incredible that was. I don't even know how many tracks are in the game as it is, but I'd pay a decent amount for more VR tracks. Maybe DLC covers real Daytona/VR/Scud/Indy500/GT tracks. That would be amazing.
