Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Count me in as another person who's been able to receive the Nvidia/Ubisoft promotion retroactively from Newegg, via their online chat. I had purchased my Gigabyte 970 on September 19, and getting the free game promotion was quick and painless. Grabbed Far Cry 4 with it.

They're really nice. I wasn't expecting to get the promotion either, and to my surprise I did. I used their online chat support too.

Meanwhile I ordered mine on Friday, didn't get my code, will supposedly hear from a manager in 24-48 hours. Seriously, fuck Tiger Direct.

Are you supposed to get two codes if you bought two cards? I got two codes from Amazon, so I'm not complaining, but I thought it was one per customer/purchase.

Edit: Just registered FC4 and AC:U - wewt!

Gtx 970 8gb coming out soon? Feel like that's the only decent upgrade from a 770 4gb.

There was word from uk retailer Overclockers that there's no refresh planned due to GDDR5 shortages - every 8GB version would basically surmount to 2 970's nvidia could have sold.

I posted the link a few days back, but this reasoning was backed up by AMD partners just releasing the 290X 8GB at a 60% price increase over the same 4GB card.

just ordered the zotac 970 (with free game) for $320 shipped... its the shortest 970 out right now i believe and its going into my ITX rig... hoping for playable fps on my oculus rift now

Second attempt via chat with Amazon:

Checking on the Terms and Conditions of this promotional offer, I can see that this promotional offer from the manufacturer started just this Nov 4th while your order was placed on Sep 25th.
I would suggest contacting the manufacturer as they might be able to provide you with the code for their promotional offer. Here's their contact information:

Ugh.

I got two G1's and they've been great. They're really long cards, tho. I think 12in??

Edit: looks like you linked the "overclocked" version. I haven't heard much about that one, I'm afraid.

I should add that the card needs to be sub 10".

Also does that Gigabyte only work on MIni ITX boards or all boards?

So i got the corsair HX750i and I still have Coil Whine... it seems like its less, but its still pretty severe. Sigh.

This case manages to dampen the sound a little bit i guess. either that or its so loud in the case that it drowns out the buzzing... oh well, at least i like the new look of my pc.

Saw your post about newegg so I tried my luck. At first I was denied even though I told the rep people were getting it. I told the rep a 2nd time and she came back and told me since she "values" me as a customer, she placed an order for me for the free promo.

Not interested in a racing game and another FPS, think i'll just get AssCreed. Hopefully it doesn't look and play like shit on PC.

Any idea why Sony seemingly hasn't been impacted by the shortages with the ps4?

Same deal for me on the EGG being super awesome bestest company ever!!!!! I had bought a gtx970 at launch...

"Thank you for waiting. I checked that the promotion starts on 11/ 04 and your order was placed on 9/21 so it is not eligible for the gift item. However, I can create an order for this gift item as an exception since you are our valued customer. Would you please verify your current shipping address and your email address first?"

Guys, is coil while a danger to the card. Done quite a bit of reading and getting mixed info.

Does it harm the card, I get a very slight buzzing when playing Metro 2033 at ultra with 70 fps. Cant hear it much over the fans and cpu, but when I get closer I can hear the slight buzzing and whine.

Need to stress test this card ASAP, only got 2 days left to return it, been near two weeks already.

Say, do we know how much longer the 'Pick Your Path' promotion is going to run? Surely until at least the end of Nov., right?

Just ordered the Strix off Amazon for $350. Any reason not to get this card?

I really liked mine, but it had coil whine and I returned it. The build quality is top notch and the 0dB mode was nice. I'm thinking about giving it another shot since it's back in stock through Amazon.

Try setting up a fan curve in MSI Afterburner. Settings > Fan > check the box saying "Enable user defined fan control". Apply settings. See if that does anything.

I did this today and I don't think it helped. Fans still keep spinning up for a second and then stop.

Interestingly, during PC boot I was watching the fans and one of them was spinning but the other seemed to be trying to spin but unable to, I gave it a nudge with my finger and it's been spinning in unison with the other one since then.

Downloading the 344.16 drivers now which supposedly don't have this problem.

I manually set them to keep spinning at 25% for now. I prefer that over having them turning on and off every few seconds.

Odd. I had the same issue as you but a fan curve immediately started the red fan up which also slowed the black fan down.

In any case, there should be a new vbios for us soon that should fix it

Ehi guys, do you I think that an upgrade to a GTX 970, from a 5870, is a waste of money with an I5 750 as a CPU?
This is the actual config [5 Years old :P]

P7P55D LE mobo
I5 750

16GB Ram

I don't know. I've been on the fence about buying myself a 970 and the only thing holding me back is the fear of getting one with a horrible coil whine. My tower case is closed and under my desk but I've heard lots of people complain about the whine even buttoned up and on the floor too.

It just seems hilarious to me that all of these 970's seem to have the potential for loud whine irregardless of manufacturer. You would think they all would have noticed this before approving for production...?

So guys, I'm pulling the trigger tonight on the 970. Since I only play with headphones coil whine isn't a huge problem for me and my PC is tucked away a bit far away under the table. So which one would be the best for me?

that's disappointing. If nothing else, try letting Unreal Valley loop overnight. Some users on the EVGA forums have reported that has helped. Why I don't know. But it seems like a suggestion.

We can't really answer that question. Every brand is affected by coil whine, each has its own design and performance targets.
Here is an interesting link comparing the Gigabyte, MSI and ASUS 970s :

I was slightly worried about coil whine but I generally have good luck with electronics and I really think these issues always seem to you more common than they actually are. Naturally, because people who have problems tend to complain about them, people who don't have problems are happily playing. So the negative voices are always more noticeable and that creates an unrealistic impression to someone who is reading comments online.

I just ran my first "stress test" of my MSI 970 using Unigine Valley and the coil whine was faint even with the case open, on top of the desk and with the sound muted. So I'm pretty sure it will be a non-issue once I close the case, put it on the floor and have a game sound coming out of the speakers. I guess I lucked out, again.

Or maybe Unigine isn't a very good test for coil whine, I don't know. I tried to push the framerate as high as I can by running it in Low Quality, at 640p and turning off all effects and AA, but strangely it didn't jump past 120fps I think. Temps didn't go above 60 (on Ultra, 1200p, 8x AA, etc)

Need more tests...

My advice, don't go looking for it.

With my ASUS I had two variations. The coil whine at high fps (> 200 faint, >2000 flat out squealing). This I can live with. Vsync is your friend. The other variation was a buzz that occurred at low FPS that changed pitch as you panned around in a game and got softer and louder as the clock speed of the card changed. That buzz was what I could not live with. It was prevalent in Witcher 2 and Final Fantasy XIII from my early tests and I could even hear a hint of it in CS:GO. Not cool.

My EVGA still has the coil whine at high fps though it is NOTABLY less severe. Still, that wasn't the issue with the ASUS. Tests in Witcher 2 and Final Fantasy XIII showed no buzz at low fps. Yay. However, I started playing BF4 with the free time and noticed the buzz :( That said, it's again greatly diminished compared to the ASUS to the point where I tuned it out in normal gameplay. I've decided I can live with that and I've been cranking out Unreal Valley benchmarks to kind of "burn in" the card in an attempt to lessen it even further (EVGA has recommended this for some reason).

I am convinced that EVERY aftermarket 970 has this to a degree or another with some being worse than others based on your system. Now if you hear it or not depends on the case, where it's located, what games you are playing, vsync or not, etc etc.

Hmm, ran the Unigine Benchmark at 1080p Ultra with no AA (to match the settings of Bit-Tech's review and compare), and I got a score of 3052, which seems significantly lower than Bit-Tech's review lists their score of the same card at 4497.

Their setup's CPU, RAM and SSD are much faster than my build, but they mention that Unigine is a GPU bound test so I didn't think those factors would make such a big difference. Neither card is overclocked beyond factory.

Does the difference of CPU (i5-2500 @3.3GHz Vs. i5 3570K @4.2GHz) and RAM (1333MHz DDR3 Vs. 2,400MHz DDR3) and HDD Vs. SSD explain a 47% increase in the benchmark score on a GPU-bound test? Should I be worried?

Unfortunately I don't have any games to run right now...
except Super Hexagon :P

EDIT: I realized later that I must have had DSR enabled and probably other enhancements in Nvidia control panel thus the lower score. When I reset to defaults I get respectable scores in Unigine.
