Damn I got like a 45% win ratio... that feeling when you're not as good as you think you are.
Haha, don't worry about the ratio. I mean, if you wanted you could back out each time you find a good player and keep looking for people to beat. But you're better off sacrificing the stat to play matches with people you can learn more from.

Not liking the new stages... Half the time they end up killing me... It's like the game is trying to get you to use the FD versions of everything.

Zelda has some significant buffs in this game. Her specials are all better this time. Din's Fire is stronger, Nayru's Love comes out quicker and I think has less lag (making it super annoying). Of course, her new down-b is great in a lot of situations. I got my ass handed to me a few times thinking I would be fine as "she basically the same character". Nope.

I don't feel like Din's Fire is better. It comes out way slower and you can't set it off as close to you as you could in Brawl, so it loses a lot of utility. Also I think her forward smash attack is significantly worse, as it doesn't have as much range and doesn't persist as long.

I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I had a 95% win ratio until Saturday. My friend hosted a smash party so I went and let other people use my 3DS to play. Not only did my slider get totally fucked up with these now-permanent nail indents, but people also played online and dropped my win ratio down to 83%. I was pretty pissed at first, but I'm over it now. I'm slowly bringing it back up.

Explosion is bigger and it does more damage, though. She's way better at edge guarding than in Brawl because of her specials. Can't speak to her fsmash, as I don't really play Zelda. Just what I've noticed playing online.

Little Mac's far from OP. Not only is he completely terrible in the air, but he relies so heavily on reading the opponent that I don't see him being easy to use in a tournament setting. I think he's more easily beaten than a lot of people in this thread are letting on, because most people just got the game a few days ago. I've seen some characters that Mac can barely deal with (Meta Knight, ZSS, Wario (the grab remove thing really doesn't make Wario as shit as you might think)) already, and I'm sure more strategies will pop up soon.

So Mario is basically the bane of Mac's existence. His dash attack clanked with my Down Smash...

Mario's rather good against Little Mac, especially with Fludd, though I honestly don't think Dr. Mario is. It's strange how much of a difference there is playing them as Mac. Really feels like playing almost a whole different character, especially compared to Lucina and Dark Pit.

Haha it's cool, it's not the ratio as much as it is just me realizing how average I am compared to the other players out there. Smash always has that thing where you're better than your friends, so you start thinking you're the best there is, but then someone new comes around and completley trashes you. That's kinda how online feels like right now for me.

Target Smash is a terrible mini game. To score big you have to perfect it. That requires going online and learning the Villager pattern and then adapting it to any other character you want to try and perfect with.

Oh, yeah. Most people get that at some point. Unless you're one of a certain handful of people, there's always someone better.

For me, I could have a good ratio if I just used my mains from Brawl: TL and Luigi. I'm really trying to learn new characters so my ratio inevitably suffers. So I've moved on from caring.

This title is pretty much the largest release ever for the 3DS, and in one of my favorite franchises ever so I figured I'd give some knee jerk feedback from my first 5-6 hours of play time with it (and the fact that it has captured my interest for that amount of time speaks to the strength of the franchise, the gameplay, and this game in particular).

Overall, what I would say is that the game is excellent at its core. It is quick to move through menus and through classic mode / the various modes of play. For those of us who are busy in life, this is a welcome change to the series since previous iterations had you playing for sometimes 50 - 100 hours before unlocking certain characters. Character unlocks happen quicker here, I've already unlocked 3.

The feel is standard smash bros. The game feels a bit too ground based for me when I play "For Glory" mode, and that's because players think they can cheese their way to victory (to those of you that have the game -- use Ness against all the Little Macs you encounter, Ness destroys him). "For Fun" mode is fun, but my biggest problem continues to be Nintendo's insistence on controlling my style of play. That is -- I can't choose to do a for fun match with ONLY stock against random players. I can do that with friends, but I can't do it with random players. As such, the matches are timed and the whole game turns into a "here let me snipe a kill to up my score and then run away for the rest of the match so that I win". It's a cheesefest in that regard.

That said, the online even on the 3DS is leaps and bounds ahead of the Wii Brawl online experience. I would say 8 or 9 out of 10 of the matches I have played have had little to no lag, and the lag that has been there has not affected my play experience to the point where I wanted to kill myself like in Brawl. Almost no connection issues as well. I will do further testing on all of this though.

The design of the game itself is quite excellent...as reviews have noted there are notable gameplay feedback loops and an in-game economy that rewards play in relevant ways. It drives you to play, and to try different things. These are the types of designs you want in a game like this.

Now we get to the worst aspect of Smash 3DS -- the controls. I don't know if its just that I don't have big enough hands, but I simply cannot see how the 3DS L + R triggers could ever be comfortable to use in Smash Bros. I'm not going to expand on this point since I think it is generally a flaw which cannot be worked out of the portable iteration. I'm still able to play the game, and I'm still able to have fun, but after using the GameCube controller I don't think I'll ever be comfortable with another control scheme for Smash. For me at least the cube controller fits like a glove...and fits like a natural extension of my body. On 3DS, you have to reach so far up and hold the system so awkwardly if you want to use L + R that it makes high levels of play nigh impossible unless you want to retool the entire way you play.

My knee jerk score for Smash 3DS so far is 8/10. If this game is replicated on Wii U in its current form, and I can use a Gamecube controller, it will likely receive a very high score indeed. OH, and Pacman is fucking awesome. Favorite new character so far.

I think this is the key here. If a mac can read your game, It's very difficult to defend yourself against him. Even with his small amount of opening options.

Do we know what the lag is on just landing?

20 is enough to be punishable, I don't know why anything has more than around that. All those moves at 30 ;_;. And those stupid plummeting dairs.

Surprised to see some of the air dodge lag randomly lower.

I don't know if there's data on just landing.

Yeah I was surprised by that as well. I checked in training and the difference between WFT's air dodge lag versus other characters is really noticeable.

Yessss this is so true. Even with a grip they are just so uncomfortable to use. I knowingly under-utilize shield and grab because of it.

Wii U game will feel so much better to actually play.

So far these are the characters I've been using this weekend and my thoughts on them..

Captain Falcon - My dude. This ain't Melee, but his knee doesn't completely suck anymore and he got some other nice improvements from the embarrassment he was in Brawl. He's a solid character that is as good as I need him to be. He's fuckin Captain Falcon. I love him.

Falco - He has had a really weird learning curve. He plays VERY different from Fox in this game. Almost to a Wolf level. He relies on reading opponents, reacting with his strong pokes, an offstage fighting. His forward smash is one of the best in the game, with good kill potential and range, and very safe. And all of his air moves have had slight tweaks to give them all a firm purpose. His fair in particular, is much improved and is actually useful now, especially when fighting high off stage.

At first I thought he was just a little too clunky, but now I've come to really like him. I don't know how good he'll be in the grand scheme of things, but I think he's a lot better than people generally think. If you plan to play him, just don't play him like Fox at all. Ignore his up smash and typical Fox things, and try a more careful approach with well-timed pokes.

Pac-Man - Fuckin LOVE this dude. Man is he fun to play. His playstyle is interesting, because he seems to be all about just controlling space. He's generally agile but not quick, and his aerials are meaty and fast along with his ground moves, but they lack K.O. potential. This along with the fire hydrant and his amazing recovery allows you to control the stage well, and set up options for him. What this means for me, is using this time to charge up his neutral B to his godlike key.

The key hits hard for damage, is as fast as a light thrown item, and has great K.O. potential. It can be used for stage control, damage, gimping, raw kills, ect. This thing is seriously devastating, and I believe a huge part of his gameplan. His side B is also pretty great for a variety of reasons. It has super armor after starting, can be used for recovery, and can even be a K.O. move if spaced properly. But it can also be interrupted by opponents that hit the power pellet before Pac-Man takes off, so keep that in mind. I would also say his smash attacks are pretty lacking, especially his up smash, but his down smash can be useful.

Those are pretty much my main three guys right now. Really enjoying all of them and the game in general. Definitely a pretty awesome selection of characters and playstyles.

2DS's bigger form and triggers make it much more comfortable.

It also might help to replace one of the face button jumps with something that's normally a trigger. For the most part two jump buttons aren't needed, and pressing one less trigger could make it comfier.

Can't wait for GCN controller edition.

Playing against Duck Hunt in For Glory, and it made me realize that his projectiles are great while Megaman's sucks. Why Sakurai, why?

As for Shulk, I'm starting to feel it! So far my problems with his is his attacks are pretty slow so I really can't time it good right now, but the buster+smash buff combo is pretty awesome.

Do you have any set ups for falcon's knee or are you just throwing them out raw?

I don't know what the Villager pattern is, but I think I got two perfects in the day I was playing Target Smash, neither of which were with Villager.

However, I have not managed to ever clear all the tiny green targets as well. Is there a prize / requirement to clear those?

Yeah man, and I can't wait. Cannot wait to hold that Gamecube controller. 3DS is great though for on the go and for character training. :0)

What does adding a track to favorite do in the sound test mode? Manual has no explanation.

After you add some tracks, click the little star in the upper left hand corner and you'll enter your favorites list. It allows you to create a playlist for sound mode. You can also use the icons in the upper right to change play modes and allow the 3DS to continue playing music while closed.

It'd be neat if your favorites would be favored during stage selection but, eh, it's a fun feature anyway.

Not that this post will add much to the discussion, but just for a data point, I have played 100 matches online and only one had lag that made it unplayable, with a player with a Japanese name. Three other matches had minimal lag, barely noticeable, and the remaining 96 matches were like playing a CPU with absolutely zero lag.

I have Verizon FIOS with a 50/50 connection, if that matters.

Master Core is really challenging at intensity 9.0. My highest still is Fox at 8.5. Damn so close.

But I still think Tabuu remains as the hardest boss in Smash ever. That cheap shockwave is just so hard to evade.

I'm satisfied with mario and grenjnja. Been using them in for glory the last few days. My goal is to next take mega man pit and bowser online. So much more to do in this game. I still need to finish classic with everyone.

No real set ups yet, mainly still using it for offstage and general aerial follow-ups. It can be a bit dangerous to throw out when not too high up because of it's increased landing lag, so it's been hard to find reliable set ups from the ground.

has anyone managed to beat the "110 KO's in the 3-minute smash" challenge??
I got a 109 with Bowser once, but it was a really lucky shot... I',m usually on 85-100. FML

Ike and Bowser seems to be the best characters for this particular challenge; or do you have some tips with anyone else?

In training mode I had a few setups at mid-percents that led to easy kills with the knee. DAir actually seems to have more setups in this game just based on my own experimentation.

But, once you throw VI in that can all go out the window.

Yeah, it happens. I had a 65% a couple of days ago and then got into some intense match with this guy's Ike. I couldn't win but kept playing out of pride. Now I'm hovering around 46%. Bleh.

Nayru's has bad priority though. :/

Kirby. Get to a side - fly up - down+B. They all follow you to that side and stay under you you... kill all 4 at once, they respawn, repeat. It's how I got 300 kills in Endless Smash too.
