No story mode. Sakurai decided not to do one this time because all of Brawl's cutscenes were uploaded to Youtube.

You can unlock characters in smash mode by playing a certain number of matches, or in classic mode by fulfilling certain requirements (Except Wario. He is gotten by beating 100 man smash).

So just Wario needs to be unlocked via 100 man smash, got it thanks.

How do I activate my Smash super btw? Does Sonic's have Live and Learn play?

i fucking hate litte mac why did they put him in the gamd.

I like that he is finally in Smash, but his poor recovery and lack of aerial range alone, aren't enough to balance him out. He has no business being that fast and powerful plus having super armor, a counter and having such good KO potential at low damage.

After breaking the smash ball press b without holding any direction to use your final smash.

I haven't seen Sonic's final smash in this game yet, but Live and Learn is one of the songs that plays on the Green Hill Zone stage.

I don't get the Mac hate. Maybe people overseas have yet to figure it out, but Mac is really easy to shut down. Get him off the stage and he's done. As a Mac main, I wish it weren't so, but them's the brakes.

There are too many Awakening trophies in this game. I haven't even come acrosws a single Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn trophy FFS.

Yeah, he has terrible recovery when it comes to getting knocked off the stage. Amazing damage output though. Mac punishes.

Just played a Marth that only countered and smash attacked. It was embarrassingly giving me a lot of trouble, until I just started grabbing him constantly.

But seriously that counter is really damn quick and pretty damn safe. Not to mention it sends you fuckin flying.

I enjoy playing against Little Mac, certainly much more than playing against characters that attempt to zone me out. I feel more comfortable when someone is also approaching me, rather than me just approaching them and them doing keep-away... probably because I'm so bad at judging distances that I'll whiff things if I'm left completely to my own devices. <___<

The problem is getting off him the stage. Luckily I usually play heavies so I can take a beating before landing a few hits on him and getting him off.

So I found a good way to accomplish the 200 endless kills trophy, all ya gotta do is use wario and side b. Got 300 kills this way, and it does take some time, but definitely works!

I still haven't played as little mac, I'm afraid of maining him.
After a while I've figured that Charizard fire blitz and rock smash can punish a lot of Little Mac's crap. People think that only Mac has super armor, when they see the blitz coming through their punch they lose their minds... hahahaha

Hoping to play with some of you guys some time this week. I could use some pointers as I can hold my own sometimes online but get shut down more often than not.

Well the street pass tin pin slammer clone thing was pretty fun but I still have only met one person who had it on. I guess others haven't set it on in their game even though I regularly street passed quite a few people who have the game.

Super armor makes sense for large, slow characters. Little Mac is neither.

Yeah but he's also completely useless in over 90% of the play space, where as other large slow characters or not. Little Mac only has the flat ground, and he only has a few tactics there. Those tactics need to be strong.

Rosalina feels like she's going to be really good. Even though I don't know what I'm doing with her, she just seems really strong. And her gimmick is great.

I played a Rosalina online, I had never played as Rosalina at all, ever. Even in all that classic mode grinding.

I had NO idea what I was doing and it was hilarious. Luma was murdering me.

Man, every battle I've had against a Lucario has been intense as ZSS. Like, he can knock you out at relatively lower percentages. Plus, he can do a lot of damage over a long range. And the end of his stupidly long-reaching Up + B move actually had a knockback effect when it hit me at the tail-end of the recovery. Plus, moves that would usually KO most other characters wasn't enough at the same percentage.

I do not like fighting Lucarios.

I will have to say the newcomers are a step up from Brawl. I liked maybe 2 or 3 in that game compared to here where I like all of them but Bowser Jr. (personal reasons) and Shulk (he seems the weakest sword user and Manado takes too long).

In terms of rankings, I have no clue if I like it more than Melee. It is better than Brawl in gameplay alone and overall better than 64. If the Wii U version has the amount of content Brawl had, then I can say it may be close to Melee.

Okay, so I've spent a weekend with Smash, been trying to collect my thoughts and here are a few of my takeaways:

1) Pac-Man is a boss bitch - This is a character I had zero interest in using prior to buying the game, he kinda looked like a Game & Watch type (heavy on gimmick specials and projectiles, sort of a floaty agility, i.e. not for me), but holy shit was I wrong about him. His speed is about average, but he's agile, good for zoning and for maneuvering around the set, a good jump recovery, his specials are actually really functional, and most importantly for me, his air-A game is on point. As a Sheik player, I love bouncing opponents in the air and dunking them off stage, and Pac-Man is interestingly pretty built for that as well. Again, unexpected, but pleasantly surprised. Pac-Man is the closest I have to a main right now. Shocked tbh.

2) Little Mac: Heavily unbalanced, hilariously fun to use - Another unexpected surprise with this one. I went from having no interest in using him (again, I like agile characters that can pull out air combos) to having a great time beating mufahs down. His side-As are a bit overpowered and I can see him getting nerfed up sadly. Ridiculous KO potential, though again I find myself failing super hard with him sometimes because I'm so used to jumping around the stage and sort of getting out of people's radars during a match. Little Mac demands to be the center of the fight at all times, so it's a style adjustment for me. That said though, I'm really enjoying Little Mac.

3) Smash 4 might be better than Melee - This is my super subjective opinion coming through, going back to Melee after playing this for a weekend did not make me feel as apprehensive toward 4 as I was prepared to be. In fact, I found myself preferring 4's play style a little bit more when I got to compare them so closely. Melee's characters felt super heavy, like gravity was tuned up or something. Smash 4 seems to retain Melee's speed and snappiness but moderates the heaviness a little bit. Seems to me like a perfect balance and I'm surprised at seeing myself prefer 4's pace. Granted a lot of this could be hype for the new installment but I do remember preferring Melee to Brawl pretty early on, and I'm just happy that that feeling didn't come back. So ready for the Wii U version next month.

4) More potential mains: Charizard, Sonic, ZSS, Lucina - I've been having a great time using these four in addition to Pac-Man and Little Mac this past weekend. I was always decent with Sonic in Brawl and barely servicable with ZSS, but they're amped up a bit here. Sonic's ground game is much more balanced, and ZSS got a little power boost I think, or at least more knockback. But the coolest character in this lot is Charizard, because Charizard will always be the coolest. He's super fun to use, has more speed than I bargained for, and has great KO game. The first sorta "heavy" character that I've ever considered maining officially.

Ok so overall this game is amazing, but we already knew that. lol

I still haven't played one online. From trying her though, I think I should be scared.

I see we're still talking about Mac. :P

I think he's fine as is. I admit, I'm pretty terrible at fighting against him, but I've definitely been able to kill him. He's super easy to kill when he makes a mistake. The problem is most makes just keep rushing you, which can be really tough to put down. I haven't figured out a great strategy yet, although I try to grab and throw him off the stage, but lot's of the time he's too quick for that. Anyway, I'm sure with practice I'll figure him out. If you think about it he only has like 3-4 attacks that he's going to use at any given time.

Speaking of tough challengers, who's giving you guys the most trouble at the moment?

I'm working on my Pac-Man a lot and I have to say big, heavy, hard-hitters are giving the most trouble for whatever reason. Pac's got some great spacing, and good kill moves but I just cannot keep up with the damage output of some of those guys. I find myself playing keep away all game and nickel-and-dimeing them with damage as I can get it in. Pretty different from my usual aggressive routine. Anyone have some tips? Notably, Ike, DDD and Bowser cause me the most pain. And of course, Mac too, but he' far from a heavy character.

Just got done fighting a very strong Zelda. I think she's really being overlooked right now. Her new phantom move is pretty great, especially for edgeguarding.

Actually, I think there's a lot of characters being overlooked. I mean that's normal, there's so many damn characters.

Even with light shielding, Marth Killer wouldn't work. It relies on either edgehogging, or getting off the edge quickly to punish up B's landing. Neither works in this game.
...I somehow completely forgot about that. Damn, I miss edgehogging.

Totally agreed, I am really liking what they did with Pac-man. I had zero expectations of him going in. A shame about his grab though. I just wish it could have been a normal grab, shit is so slow / risky

As someone who has wanted Mac since before Melee I'm quite happy he isn't garbage. I think it's a little early to declare him overpowered, though. He is ridiculously bad whenever he's in the air.

Me too. It made off stage play so much more likely to be rewarding, since you could actually get back to the edge first and keep them off. In general it made the recover process more exciting, since they didn't just have a nearly free route back.

Zelda has some significant buffs in this game. Her specials are all better this time. Din's Fire is stronger, Nayru's Love comes out quicker and I think has less lag (making it super annoying). Of course, her new down-b is great in a lot of situations. I got my ass handed to me a few times thinking I would be fine as "she basically the same character". Nope.

Damn I got like a 45% win ratio... that feeling when you're not as good as you think you are.

Yeah, it happens. I had a 65% a couple of days ago and then got into some intense match with this guy's Ike. I couldn't win but kept playing out of pride. Now I'm hovering around 46%. Bleh.

I'm finding that the combination of the 3DS controls and my own clumsiness makes it really difficult to execute commands properly. Tilts become smashes, left goes up, etc. It also doesn't help that the online lag tends to drop inputs and screw me over.

And yet, I still can't stop playing. Really looking forward to the Wii U version to address these issues.
