The match making doesnt seem to care about the ping some people got. Sometimes it's perfect, sometimes it's a fucking slideshow.
I wish we had some proper settings and if we could actually see the connection quality.

You'd have to hammer it, outfit drops seems to be extremely rare.

I have HomePass set up and have not gotten any passes so far.

I set up homepass just so I can finish the 5 hits challenge quickly and have seen people with Smash 3DS in StreetPass plaza, but got no hits for Smash, but I did for other games. I wonder if they didn't enable StreetPass for Smash yet or if homepass doesn't work for the game.

You can get them in Classic mode as well via the Reward roulette. If you "pause buffer" by mashing the home button you can get the Custom Parts icon almost every time it shows up.

For Fun matches are going to be a crap shoot because if one person has a bad connection, everyone suffers. I'd almost advise to never play it and stick to either the For Glory variation of it (FFA just without items and the crazy stages) or just play 1v1.

Try Yoshi out. He's very solid and easy to use here.

I don't know if this was mentioned, but my friend was having problems with lag online, and he said he noticed power saving mode was turned on on the 3ds. Turning that off could fix it for some of you.
