You should work on your charm. Charm works everytime or rather your speech. If nothing works just try to get angry (well if you talk to a guy which can take it). That always works. Also lie your way to victory with "This store and this one already sell this game... well then I will buy it there. Not my problem" <-- This is the golden way to the earlier games.

Try that at the two retail stores I worked at, and we'd tell you to have a nice day. The computer wouldn't let you ring up a game before it's launch date-- it doesn't matter how pathetic the customer would act, because the register wouldn't unlock unless it was after midnight on the release date.

Funny enough, I tried the same thing at a Toys R Us for a game I saw behind the case a few
days early. The granny working stock in electronics opened the case and tried to ring it up, but got this weird look on her face and pages a manager. He looked at the screen and shook his head, saying "we can't sell this till Tuesday" and looking at me like I should have known better.

I've tried, and heard, the "well, so-and-so are already selling it!" line a dozen times, too. I would pick up the phone and start dialing their number to confirm, which is usually enough to end it there.

...Thank God I don't work in retail anymore.

Custom moves are needed to make certain characters not-shit as well as add some actual variety to the damn game.

I mean if you get a character that only has a few good moves to use, atleast we can let people use custom moves and actually have potential for their own signature playstyle for that character rather than "Do the same thing as everyone else, because that's the only thing that works with this character".

We will be using them here on gaf?

Yes, they're going to be legal in the tournament where I give away a capture card, they're going to be legal in the online event mode stuff I'm going to do and they're going to be legal in quite a few things other gaffers end up doing.

They're going to be used a lot, there's no logical reason not to use them.

Going from the 3DS version to the Wii U version is going to be like that time in DBZ where Goku reveals he was wearing weights that were slowing him down and then takes them off.

Is there a way to allow custom moves but not any special items?

Alot wont, key word, alot.

Nope, the game doesn't even show you if they're using custom equipment either, so people could technically get away with it if the increase was less noticeable.

That's not going to happen in local tournaments though.

Thats the only tournament we having? Well I just want to participate in the ones without custom moves as thats where ill be putting my time into and learning my characters. Dont care for customs unless somebody want them on for fun and stuff with items then its whatever.

The only GAF tournament I've seen not allowing them is the troubled bat one, I'm pretty sure the rest are ok with it.

Is there a tourney thread??

I'm a little bit disappointed, but I'm still pre-ordering. It's just not going to be as good a game as I'd hoped, content-wise. It still seems like a good enough engine, and the characters look fun enough that I can justify owning a portable Smash. Here's hoping beyond hope that the Wii U version has an amazing level of single-player content. Smash Wii U needs to have

More challenges than ever - perhaps 480, four panels, one for the four main Smash characters (Mario, Link, Pikachu, and Kirby)
Event Mode w/ co-op (but make it GOOD, not like Brawl - I want some really awesome and creative events!)
Adventure Mode - Straight up return to Melee's style, but on a grand scale
Target Test, w/ 51 stages
(optional) Board the Platforms, w/ 51 stages
(optional) Battlefield Mode
(optional) Characters unlocked through linking the 3DS and Wii U versions (though it'd be pretty annoying :v maybe it would be a bonus at the time for those who owned both versions, and single-version owners could buy them as DLC?)

That's a good way to get yourself disappointed with those list. :P

Why stop there. Add Stage Builder and Create An Events where y'all can trade and upload the events for people to clear it or so.

In my hype for Smash 4, I've been desperately trying to play/finish up some Nintendo games.

Metroid Prime 2
Wind Waker HD (finished before)
Earthbound (been at the beginning forever)
Mario 3D Land (gold flags and Luigi)
Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon
Xenoblade (sorry kitty)
Link Between Worlds (haven't started yet)

Hyrule Warriors came and ruined everything, and got me all hype on Zelda again, so I turned back on Wind Waker HD and I'm now to the wonderful Triforce hunt.

I really want to finally play ALBW, so should I just shut off WW for now and dig into that? I'm free the next few days so I've got time. Also, will my experience be better if I finish LTTP first which I regrettably never have and lost my data? Arg it's so hard to choose because I know when Smash comes out all my attention will go to it. I'd really like to really dig into Earthbound too.

Also, what games are YOU playing Gaf in Smash hype?

For me, it's Xenoblade. Update on my progress, I just got 5th member joining my party.

Do you think we will have trailers for Duck Hunt and Bowser Jr?

I doubt it but it would be nice tho.

They're going to be used a lot, there's no logical reason not to use them.

There are plenty of reasons to not use them competitively so please don't let your own bias somehow dictate the "logical" flow of things.

I'll start, custom moves add too many unknowns. If if does end up being 2-stock, 5-minute Smash games, that might promote campy/defensive play. Rather than knowing exactly what your opponent can do and being able to react accordingly, players might be hesitant to go on the aggressive because they have no idea what is going to happen when the opponent presses B. So, games would slow down before every B move is used, which just won't happen.

Fighters are fun because players know how the mechanics work, they know what their opponents can do, and it becomes a dialogue in that regard. Custom moves change the meanings of words to the point where it becomes hard for the players to understand each other. This will most likely push players to not pursue that dialogue as actively.

Custom moves are a nice idea, but competitively there are a lot of problems.

Media Markt Hamburg Altona already had the game on shelves for 44.99€ so every Media Markt in Hamburg will sell it. Go get it guys!

I still have to beat Xenoblade. Pretty sure I'm close to the end of the main quest, but there's still lots of side stuff to do.

Just see/ask what moves they have. Problem solved.

I don't think "But you won't know what custom moves they're using!" is a good enough reason.

You either make them both tell each other what they're using after they've picked characters, unless there's a mutual agreement not to do so.

And if it's on the WiiU which is the one that really matters for tournaments, you'll both be on the same screen anyway at local tournaments and for online, the above still applies.

Pure bullshit. Custom moves increase offensive options in almost all scenarios. No one in MvC3 just sits back to wait and see what assists were picked. You go in with your game plan aggressively.

Are you serious?

I just don't understand what someone could have against custom moves :s. It adds variety, strategy and more options without being too random or unbalanced. I'm super bummed that I can't use custom moves for the "play with anyone" online modes.

So yeah however much you want to complain about the 3ds version, just be thankful the game isn't psasbr. Jesus. Glad I got this for free because apart from some of the animations and art/level backgrounds this thing ducking suuuuuuuucccckkkks.

As far as I'm concerned, online tournaments for Smash 3DS shouldn't have customs because you can't tell if they have equipment.

Ask in the appropriate chat room what they are using. One will have to be in communication to organise when to get online so it's not like both parties will be in complete silence.

Also tournament rules come down to the organiser.

Exactly! How you gonna ban some stuff but not others? Contradiction up the tail
I don't ban anything.

Honestly, I don't even care about the optional stuff THAT much - but we definitely need to have a classic Target Test, an Event Mode, and more challenges than at least Smash - 480 is just a hopeful. :V

Banning items and 90% of the stages is okay, but banning custom moves is a terrible idea.

Is this supposed to be sarcasm? I can't tell.

Because yes, banning items and stages that get in the way of the game is okay whereas something that gives individual players more options and the ability to have some more variety in the characters without anything being massively overpowered or broken is a terrible idea.

Where do I sign up for it?

I'm just saying that For Glory probably isn't indicative of what the competitive rule set is going to wind up being, as it's pretty limiting, even without taking custom moves into account.

Of course, if you're interested in For Glory in particular and not the general competitive scene, then I misunderstood you.
