Nintendo sure loves Isabelle

Lol at people referring to Rosalina as a "goddess". Please. She's a great character and all, but you're giving her a bit too much credit there. Referring to the other two princesses as boring is also kind of subjective. And you can't ignore the fact that Rosalina is practically devoid of any overt personality in comparison.
I'm not giving her too much credit, she is literally a Goddess. She has powers and everything. Go look it up if you don't believe me.

Boring may be subjective, but even with all of the extra time Peach and Daisy have been around, neither of them have a back story as deep as Rosalina got in one game. Peach and Daisy are still basically stereotypes, and compared to Rosalina they have no characterization or motivation. That storybook shows far more personality then either of the other princesses have had in their whole history of existence.

Every month they ask an irreverent question in the Animal Crossing Plaza app on Wii U and users may cast one vote. It's an easily tracked metric of popularity and anytime I've looked Isabelle is number 1 - all the time - for everything.

Surprised this hasn't been posted yet:

Add another person the the "Don't really like Isabelle" minority. She does seem vaguely useless and too perky to me. Guess I want more Tropico style level of control over my town government, not being restrained by a creepy assistant that I don't choose.

Also, I don't like Shih Tzus in real life, so I don't find her that cute. I like the bears and reptiles and bird villager types better in AC. Though my bf says I have a strange sense of "cute" for a female. :P

I am in total agreement with what you just said about Isabelle. Also, I love squirrels, lions and hamsters but my favorite villager is actually a deer

Lopez is the coolest and cutest, Isabelle can't compare to him.

She is literally a godess, hell she basically retconned the bad end of mario galaxy like it never happened

Wait, you've had to close other threads because of her? Oh god which?

I think it was a thread that was just purely hype for New Leaf. People started posting really weird stuff in there. Even starting to have different logos for "Lewd Leaf" and "Pure Leaf" something like that.

I'd pay cold hard cash for Isabelle DLC that adds her to the roster as a clone of Villager. And when Isabelle is in play, her Assist Trophy is toggled off, and her brother Digby will appear instead, throwing fruit like she would.

She'd work great as a Villager clone. Her facial expressions could make her look terrified as she swings the axe and topples a tree over on her enemies!
You just made reality a bit worse :( At least we have her in Mario Kart :P

I'm not even a huge fan or anything, but she's way too cute, lol.

Imagine if Smash gets DLC and Sakurai does a Miiverse update for it:

PICTURE #1

"Isabelle from Animal Crossing: New Leaf joins the battle! She plays similar to Villager, but some of her properties are different. Her unique personality really shines through!"

PICTURE #2

"What about the Assist Trophy of Isabelle, you say? When a player uses Isabelle, her Assist Trophy is disabled. Instead, Isabelle's brother Digby will appear!"

This would actually be pretty cool.

Overrated along with Rosalina. Nintendo has yet to make a new "timeless character" in a while. At least to me.

Some time needs to pass before considering something timeless or not :P

I agree that heavyweight space Peach is bland, though. But Isabelle? Nah, she's not a clone or anything. Toadette remains my favorite female, though.

When someone's playing as Rosalina in Mario Kart 8, they don't think "damn, I'm really enjoying myself because Rosalina's mom died and that gives her purpose."

Also, were we reading the same storybook? Because "girl's mom dies, girl gets sad and goes into space, girl meets little creatures becomes their mother, girl is happy again" is hardly deep.

The only reason people think she's deep is because everything else in Mario is so shallow. She's a kiddy pool in a world of rain puddles.

Rosalina doesn't have much in the way of personality, but that's kind of what makes her "cool" next to Peach and Daisy, who have a lot of personality but tend to be a bit... noisy, to put it nicely. (Mind you, I'm a Daisy fan)

Rosalina also has the association with space, which is a really neat place in the Mario world, starting with Star Road in Super Mario World (OK, not technically space, but close to the stars!), and continuing with the Iblard-ian worlds of Super Mario Galaxy.

The fact she has a backstory at all, and one dealing with love and loss, is not the source of her popularity, but it does make her a more human character. Makes her love for the Luma more meaningful. She's their parent!

And then the way she reboots all of existence at the end of Galaxy 1 is rather impressive. She's clearly transcended her origins as a tragedy-stricken orphan and become a true goddess of the cosmos!

For my tastes, though, I didn't really care much for Rosalina until Sakurai made her cool in Smash Bros.

Isabelle is still way cooler!

OK, I'm just going to leave my statement at this; Rosalina is a powerful character, I get that, but she is not by any means classified as a goddess in the Mario universe. Just a princess. That's just your embellishment of her character, it's not a fact. I also find that bringing up her back story as a reason to why she's better than other Mario characters is a bit silly when the Mario universe isn't even narrative driven. Back story is a pretty unimportant trait in a franchise like Mario where the only "story line" that ever exists is Mario needing to save Peach from Bowser.

Hell, Rosalina's back story was in a 'you don't even have to read this' story book! I'm not saying that calling her a goddess is completely unjustified, but it just feels like some members here are a bit too eager to prove Rosalina's status over other Mario princesses/characters whenever they're brought up. Gets a bit annoying, honestly, lol.

Let's just say Rosalina has "god-like powers," lol.

Bottom line, she's extraordinarily powerful. But like I said before, I think she's mainly popular because she's a calm/cool alternative to the giggly, bubbly and boisterous duo of Peach and Daisy.

On another topic entirely, here's a shot of Isabelle's Final Smash in the upcoming SSB DLC -- The Landmaster! Only works against landlords, though:

Don't stress yourself out over this. It's no different than the people who jokingly state that they watch hentai for the plot. We all know why Rosalina is popular, and it isn't because of her backstory.

In terms of female Nintendo characters, I wish Birdo would get more exposure. Not only is she extremely progressive for being the first transgendered character in gaming, but she has a variety of interesting moves (egg and fireball projectiles) that would translate perfectly to Smash. I guess she isn't cute enough. :((((((

Excuuuuuuuse me don't compare a dimpy little thing like the landmaster to the glorious Girls Und Panzer main tank Panzer IV.

Why did i recognize it immediately i havent seen GuP in like a year

If that happens for Isabelle, it can happen for other characters, right? Right?! Just throw in Daigoroh/Don Genie and, like, Plum or someone else from Mario Golf (They can use a tennis racket, right?), and we can get Samurai Goroh and Waluigi!

I shouldn't find this hilarious.

... Anyhoo, I'm glad to see Isabelle's one of Nintendo's biggest characters. It gives Animal Crossing a new "face" character who seems to be selling the game better than Tom Nook or K.K. Slider; she's far more marketable to more audiences, plus she's pretty adorable, even if she makes Public Works Projects a living hell sometimes. (As a Venture Bros. fan, maybe I DO want a giant Sphinx directly next to my house, MOM.) So yeah. Nintendo loves Isabelle because people love Isabelle; she even got a segment during a Nintendo Direct once, despite it being presented like an Animal Crossing conversation, using a textbox and Animalese than just having her speak. She's here to stay, I feel.

Now THAT is why I like Rosalina. And why I found her to be unbearable in 3D World and Mario Kart 8. They made her very... Peach-like, for the lack of a better word. Ugh.

Toadette is one thing but Goombella actually has a personality. In fact she has more characterization than most of the other characters in her game.

Yeah, you're not wrong. But character development isn't really something games like Mariokart and Smash can showcase very well. I don't really think the character's appearance is as marketable as Rosalina's or Isabelle's. (and yes this is just me semi-making excuses to stick with my argument instead of admitting it's been so long since I played Paper Mario I forgot there was more to her design than just being a pink goomba). I would be welcoming if Nintendo ever did try pushing the RPG-exclusive characters though.

Hahaha that's awesome.

Kinda want to try AC on 3DS now, never tried the series before. :P
Go for it! Just understand there's no real "point" to Animal Crossing. You can't beat the game or anything. It's something you're meant to enjoy for a few minutes a day, but those few minutes can easily become a few hours or more. It's pure gaming comfort food. A cozy lil' world in the palm of your hand. Lots of amusing interactions with neighbors, different events on different days, great atmosphere (I love it when it rains), a house you can dramatically expand and decorate with loot, lots of customization options, minigames on Tortimer Island, landscaping options including public works, and more. :-)

I'm scared to visit my town. My best friend Mint the squirrel probably lives in a fancy city in other country by now :(

Tom Nook's basically an organized crime figure, isn't he? Into construction, real estate, commercial distribution, predatory lending, and implied threats, with lots of shell corporations run by his family.

Now I want a Yakuza game with Tom Nook as the protagonist. Or one set in the era of Godfather.

Can we please stop mentioning Rule 34? I just want to hear everyone's thoughts on Isabelle and ponder Nintendo's use of this character in marketing.

From where I'm standing, it looks like Isabelle and Villager (now having more of a defined "look" thanks to Smash Bros. and MK8) are coming into their own as brand ambassadors, something previously handled mainly by Pikachu and the Mario universe. In other words, they've become all-purpose promotional characters that comfortably work for anything Nintendo-related.

Personally, I find this refreshing. The Mario series has no shortage of classic iconography (warp pipes, brick blocks, 1-Ups, etc.), but there is so much more to Nintendo. Also, I hope this New 3DS promo is indicative of Toon Link and Toon Zelda getting more mileage as promotional characters. They're great IP with a ton of personality and charm. :-)

I didn't liked Animal Crossing in the end (New Leaf was my first entry to the series) BUT, i still loved the hell out of Isabelle. She's adorable!

Hmm, I wonder if the Animal Crossing DLC for Mario Kart 8 is timed to coincide with news about Animal Crossing for WiiU. It is around the time of E3, after all. It'd be similar to how DKCR came out shortly before Tropical Freeze was announced.

Also, I wonder how Amiibo will be used in Animal Crossing WiiU? It seems inevitable there will be Amiibo. Maybe you can acquire specific townspeople by buying their Amiibo, and maybe you can train them to help you run the town, fishing and catching bugs for money and pulling weeds and watering plants. :-D

I honestly have to say I am a bit surprised just how successful Isabelle has become as a mascot character. I really just expected her to stay within the promotional boundaries of advertising for Animal Crossing before she got popular, but I can't complain with the result. She is really cute, after all.

I fully agree that it is very refreshing, although I admit it's a little weird to see such a recent character in the promotional go-to cast for Nintendo alongside of Mario, Samus and Donkey Kong, but overall I see it as a very positive thing that Nintendo acknowledges the potential with new characters too. It makes me wonder if other new characters, especially the Splatoon characters, could potentially become part of that cast too. It sounds impossible to me at the moment, but so did Isabelle to me as well back when she first debuted.

Why Isabelle threads turn weird at some point every single time?

The people from the other Isabelle threads start posting in this one too, that's why.
