I like Lin. hopefully Dominik (!! though he's too big for the show, almost rather he just make a feature of his own), Freidkin are still on board.

That seems to be the point he's making himself. Though I think he's doing it with the wrong show.

The point i'm making is Pizza-man is still the primary runner he gets all the power and veto power and maintains the bigger vision of the overall project.

Directing an individual Television episode isn't as huge as some would have you believe.

That being said, a fantastic episode director can make a world of difference, but it's not like one director for a few episodes is going to ruin a series.

That was really the point I was trying to illustrate.

Lin has chops and Fast Five and Furious Six are pulp greatness. Don't see a single reason to be worried. Hell, going just by the film work I've seen of Lin and Fukunaga, Lin is at least an equal talent. The only Fukunaga film I've seen is Sin nombre which is visually alright but shallow and cloyingly written, the Lin films I've seen he was able to take muscly camp and service it wonderfully. I'll place my bets on him being able to do the same with headier material given Pizza will be mapping it out for him.

There's a reason Fukunaga won an Emmy for best directing. He made other TV shows look like just that... TV shows. But it's not just his amazing work that made True Detective what it is; the fact that he directed every episode is the other part of that equation, and I remain skeptical that any set of directors can sustain the magic.

"The magic" was/is sustained on Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Terriers, FNL...Dodger took the writer-is-king mantra a bit too far I think, but part of it is true: television, being a different medium from film, doesn't necessarily need idiosyncratic director with a vision to define the style of a series. high water marks can be reached with a collage of directors aiming for the same stylistic target, guided by the showrunner and/or the patterns set in place by the pilot director or further series directors. I think Fukunaga's work in season 1 was worthy but it's not a given that it would be impossible for one director to lead the pack in season 2 while a handful of others expertly recreate in the same vision.

I agree and find that to be a legitimate concern. One that I share, but my point is, that one director of two episodes isn't going to be what ruins that aspect of that show...objectively.

The lack of coherence over multiple episodes may very well be lost but the fault won't fall squarely upon one director.

As far as Television directors somebody like Tim Van Patten or Allen Coulter who both directed some of my favorite episodes on Boardwalk Empire, could be interesting choices.

I don't know if it'd look like Fukunaga's work but I think in a second season we're not going to see a similar look or feel, if many of the rumors are to be believed.

God no. I am so tired of Mann at this point.

so the first few episodes can be good and the rest mediocre?

Look at this scust taste

Mann would fucking rock a series about California detectives ffs, it's like his calling

I love the fast movies Lin has directed but what a wack choice for a dramatic series. Only episode I'm looking forward to is the one with a long take car chase it's gonna happen

True Detective is a beautiful looking show that really doesn't need Mann's home video filter.

Them's fightin words. Lez go

What. I had no idea Fukunaga directed SN. I loved that movie, and I'm now pretty excited to see what he does next.

I don't think any of the shows you mentioned (or any other show to be perfectly honest) are quite on the level of True Detective in terms of directing/cohesiveness/consistency though.

Just finished this. It's alright, kinda way overhyped, but solid. I don't know why everyone is touting this show as having a special quality or direction - it's very similar to the many slow-burn "Nordic Noir" shows that are permeating TV these days (like Nic Pizzolattto's other show - The Killing). For incredible cinematography and moody crime, however, I prefer Kenneth Branagh's Wallander.

Also sounds like Rachel McAdams is up for the female lead

So maybe Moss is out? Or it's just down to those two?
From the Variety article on the Justin Lin rumor, sounds like it's Elizabeth Moss and Rachel McAdams vying for the female lead at this point. Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch and Vince Vaughn are all in final negotiations.

Apparently part of the difficulty in getting the cast finalized is that just about everyone involved has very busy schedules film-wise, so getting the calendars all lined up so that they can shoot S2 is tricky.

I accidentally watched the finale last night without having watched episode 7. Somehow I had it in my mind that there were only 7 episodes and clicked on the episode marked "finale" on HBO Go. Things mostly still made sense? I guess it was a little odd that they skipped from them agreeing to talk and going straight to them working together and confronting people on fishing boats with pistols.

I just figured it was meant to be jarring and confusing. This thought was amplified by remembering vague tweets and stuff about the finale being confusing when it aired. I assume those actually existed. Hmm. I guess I should go watch episode 7.

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise

He's shooting a movie about child soldiers in Africa right now. Should be out next year sometime.

Yeah, he's just being shoved down our throats, what with that one movie and one season of TV in the last five years.

I just watched the whole series in 2 days and man, loved it. Everything is top notch, maybe some of Chole's dialogues are unclear and the investigation looks more complicated than what it really is but the rest is well done. So many good moments, the 4th episode is probably my favorite of the bunch and I liked the ending too.
The final episodes had many things I wanted to see like a little friendship between Marty and Rust, some badass moments and an evolution for Rust because people tend to think that smart=sad and atheist but it's not that simple, a man can believe in something, arrogance is a limit. Rust wasn't perfect at all and he wasn't even honest or coherent but in the end he accepts his human feelings, just for a moment. I loved it.

Collateral, Miami Vice and Public Enemies all had the same look thats just

Now the Knick has a similar look to public enemies and people steady loving it

In retrospect I had no problems with how public enemies really looked, it was kinda refreshing for a period gangster flick to be honest. And Depp, graham and the avatar guy were all good. It was just not a very good film tho

Miami Vice is the best looking film Mann's made since Ali tho. Y'all ain't trying to hear that (especially blind sculli) but god damn stuff like the highway suicide with Jon hawkes and the boat cruise scene were so good. Stuff like the former scene would fit so well in a show like this

And luck, tell me that pilot wasn't well done. Mann still knows how to do them musical sequences like a gawd

Tired of Mann? How =O

Especially with someone else handling the creation and writing, as would be the case with someone like this. Even Mann's shit like Miami Vice looks incredible.

- Rosario Dawson, Jessica Biel Also Up for ‘True Detective’ Season 2 Female Lead
True Detective Season 2 already has a great male cast in place, with Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, and Vince Vaughn all signed on for major roles. But it’s had a tougher time trying to pin down the female lead.

Elisabeth Moss and Rachel McAdams have both been named as possibilities in recent weeks, but neither’s clinched the role quite yet. Now seven more actresses are entering the mix, including Rosario Dawson and Jessica Biel. Hit the jump for the latest on the True Detective Season 2 female lead casting.

TheWrap’s Jeff Sneider got his hands on a list of seven actresses who’ve been invited to read for the True Detective Season 2 female lead part: Rosario Dawson, Jessica Biel, Malin Akerman, Jaimie Alexander, Brit Marling, Oona Chaplin, and Kelly Reilly.

That’s in addition to Moss and McAdams, who are still in the running as far as we know. All the actresses are up for the same character, a no-nonsense Monterey sheriff named Ani Bezzarides who had a tough childhood and now struggles with gambling and alcohol addictions.

- A couple tidbits that Warming Glow picked up via a Colin Farrell interview:
Colin Farrell in The Sunday World said:
[The] 38-year-old star said, “I’m doing the second series. I’m so excited.”

“I know it will be eight episodes and take around four or five months to shoot. I know very little about it, but we’re shooting in the environs of Los Angeles which is great. It means I get to stay at home and see the kids.”

Farrell revealed the rest of the cast are still being locked down.
Also, some plot and filming rumors:
Nic Pizzolatto has returned to pen the next series, which looks set to pick up on the bloody murder of a corrupt city businessman found dead the night before a major transportation deal.

Three police officials from different cities are put in charge of solving the high profile case.

While the first season was directly solely by Emmy winner Cary Fukanaga, the new run will likely make use of multiple directors. No one has been confirmed as yet, but William Friedkin and The Fast and the Furious’ Justin Lin are among rumoured names.
