Asus ROG Swift PG278Q monitor, 1440p/144hz/G-Sync

Well, I think what's really important in this discussion is people understanding the basic concepts to the point where they can make an informed decision for themselves. Just saying "FUCK TN I WANT IPS/VA OR BUSSSSST" doesn't actually help anyone aside from making people "pick sides" because some respected community member prefers that type of panel.

IPS destroys TN when it comes to colors/contrast/viewing angles, and to some people, these things are what's important. When you're looking at low motion content this will always be the preferable choice and there you go.

However, unless you've seen a TN panel displaying fast motion while in 120Hz/Strobing mode for yourself, it really is an unfair judgment to make. I can literally read text on my BenQ XL2420 while scrolling quickly down a webpage when I have Lightboost on, it's crazy. I can track moving images as if they were standing still, much like when you focus on a moving object in real life. That shit isn't supposed to look blurry if it's what you're tracking. For me, this is more important for "immersion" (not to mention gameplay itself) than seeing a couple more shades of really dark/really bright or saturated colors. Now, I really do wish there were technologies out there that gave us the best of both worlds, but right now it seems to me like you need to make a choice.

Granted, I haven't tried the Eizo VA panel yet. Maybe that's part of the solution? Still, I hope this panel pays off for Asus and convinces them to forge ahead with new high refresh rate technologies. I won't be buying it yet since I am quite happy with my BenQ for now, but a future version of said panel is definitely something I'm interested in unless something even better comes along by then.

How capable are the current and near future line up of nvidia gpus in terms of being able to push this thing? I'm worried that the lack of optimization on behalf of the big 3rd party developers is going to force me to wait for the 900 series to pair with something like this.
You dont need to run 1440p/120fps in every game(and many games apparently are capped at 60fps). The great thing about his monitor is that you have a full range of high-end options to take advantage of. And If you cant hit 120fps, Gsync will smooth everything out for whatever framerate you can hit.

Its a monitor that you can grow into, basically.

That's what I want it for. It can basically be used to delay hardware upgrades, because even as more demanding games come out, you'll never notice until the average framerate gets super super low!

I do actually think they're the one company on the right path with their VA panel.

It's the only monitor that manages to avoid weaknesses of both IPS and TN panels. If they could create a panel like that at a higher resolution and larger size they'd really have something special.

If you can run games at WQHD with fidelity settings that are acceptable to you and achieve 30 fps or more, this display should suit you fine. The 780 and above are targeted at WQHD gaming.

EDIT: This is a timely review from PC Per. In it they test the monitor with a reference GTX 770. Definitely addresses your question head on.

So how much will I have to manually mess with the colors realistically out of the box? Or will I be able to plug it in and go?

I find the colours to be good. I've used really shitty TN panels in the past and this is a world apart even though it's still TN (although it;s an 8 bit panel not 6). IPS aficionados will tell you otherwise but it's really just down to personal preference and how sensitive you are to certain things. It's a good deal of money so if you have the chance to use one in a store, try that first before shelling out the £££

The colours can still, at times, look a little washed out but i only ever noticed it in browsing the web, never in games.

I also installed the ICC profile but didn't really find it made any difference.

IPS contrast is generally just as shitty as TN contrast.
(I say this as someone currently using mostly IPS panels)

Kind of OT, but my favorite display for playing fast-paced games on is still my 120 Hz DLP projector. I hope with the new HDMI standard we can finally get those at decent resolution.

Well said :)

I'm using a single 780Ti (i should state its an OC EVGA Classified) and I'm happily running games on Ultra @ 1440p at 60fps (or greater if the game allows).

1080P (or greater) DLP projector at 120Hz is my holy grail of displays. I actually designed my office around the eventuality of one.

Anyone else has trouble with D:OS and G-Sync? Every other game I am able to get the G-Sync, but not that one..

Sorry to hear your having G-Sync woes my friend.

Are you using a swift? How do do you know if your G-Sync is working or not (i'm assuming your answer will be a shit ton of tearing). I only ask because the swift has a little light to show you when G-Sync is on and functioning.

I've played a few hours of Divinity, G-Sync seemed to be on, no tearing and it looked wonderful.

Have you got G-Sync enabled in the Nvidia control panel and also the control panel monitor settings? Scroll back a few pages, i posted of pics in a previous post of the two places you should have G-Sync on (just incase it's something like that).

Pre-ordered from PCNation, says it'll ship in a week. If Amazon gets them first I can just cancel the pre-order so no risk really. Had to sell my Oculus DK2 but I'll use this way more than that.

I'm tempted to pre-order it from them since they're the first place I've seen it listed in the US (I'm just waiting on this and will pull the trigger on my system) but the info on the product page makes me paranoid. Granted it's probably incorrect since they haven't gotten all of the info yet from Asus but you'd think they would have that by now. Think the warranty and weight is just due to pre-release?

Yeah I have the swift display. Yeah the color of the LED tells you if the G-Sync is on (red), but in Divinity the color is white. The trouble seems the be only with the Divinity: Original Sin game.

If the game is not running fullscreen but a windowed fullscreen or some kind of tweak like that, G-Sync cannot be enabled. Might be the case here. That would be my guess :)

I checked the video settings and I have fullscreen and I have disabled the v-sync ingame. Really odd :(

Edit: I recreated the config files by renaming %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Larian Studios\Divinity Original Sin folder and then reinstalled the game and now it seems to work!

I don't understand, with nearly every game I have to delete the settings files otherwise when I start said games the computer crashes and reboot.

Does anyone know why? Even if I change the refresh rate to 60 hertz it still crashes.

You're going to have to troubleshoot or provide tons more info to make sense of this.

I don't know where the logic is, but there's something with the games previous settings that make them crash with this new screen.

The culprits are BF4, Crysis Warhead and Guild Wars 2 for now.

I did it, and it keeps crashing with each and every game. Even though I deleted might and magic x's settings file, I can't start the game. I mean the game starts, but each time I arrive in the menu, the screen goes black and the computer reboots.

If the machine is rebooting without warning, Windows is probably blue-screening. Depending on several factors, you may not ever see the error screen before the PC resets, giving you nothing to go on.

Download BlueScreenView and use it to look at the last error message Windows created on a blue screen crash (usually stored in the file C:\Windows\Minidump). In the message should be some clue as to what component is the problem.

any external monitoring programs running? whenever shit starts acting weird with games the first thing i do is close msi afterburner etc

I reinstalled windows and now everything's fine. But I wish I didn't have to do that :(

As far as solutions go that's the sledgehammer compared to the scalpel but spending all that £££ on the SWIFT and not being able to use it is worse. At least it's sorted now :)

Ok, so even though I reinstalled a fresh copy of windows 8.1, the problem is still there. Most games crash before I arrive in the main menu.

I was doing test with trials fusion. I start the game, screen is black, I can hear the start of the ubisoft video (but the screen stays black), and then BZZZZZZZ computer reboots.

I tried deactivating G-sync in the nvidia control panel, and then it works. I activate it again, start the game and then it crashes again.

So obviously I did all that for nothing, it wasn't a problem with windows. Does anyone know why would G-sync crash most games? For games such as Battlefield 4 I just had to delete their config files, but for most other games it simply won't work.

Check that link i posted a few posts up. That guy seems to have the same problem as you and resolved it by using DDU and installing the previous version of the Nvidia Drivers.

Did you have the latest drivers on your last install and this new windows install?

I have 340.52. So they are known to cause problems with G-sync? I was surprised there wasn't even a beta version of future drivers already available.

It's worth playing around with the few previous versions to see if any of those solve the problem.

One other question: Do you have shadowplay running when you are booting these games?

Nope no shadowplay. I'll just wait patiently for new drivers, I'm done fiddling and wasting my time with that mess. I'll just deactivate G-sync when I start a game known to crash because of it :)

New update!

I don't even have a g-sync option anymore in the NVIDIA control panel. It just vanished.

That's really, really pathetic.

edit: I cleaned the drivers, installed 337.88. The g-sync option is definitely gone.

I'm starting to really regret having purchased this monitor.

I was under the impression you enabled that with the monitor.

No you enable that with the nvidia drivers, there's a g-sync menu and you just activate it there. It's supposed to be activated by default when it recognizes your screen.

But this option doesn't appear on my nvidia control panel anymore after reinstalling the drivers multiple times.

I think I'll just return the monitor, it's too much of a hassle.

This part is true, but only because PVA is the superior technology. Both TN and IPS have shit contrast.

VA also has the worst response time of all LCD panel tech which is why TVs use it where contrast ratio really matters. On a computer monitor the black level matters not at all.

Welcome to PC gaming. On the plus side, once you get it working, it will look and play wonderfully.

Another new update!

I turned the computer off, removed the power cord to turn everything off, put the power back on again and restarted the computer.

And now the g-sync option is back in the nvidia control panel.

Seriously this new monitor will eventually drive me to jump off a cliff. I'm getting too old for that crap.

Welcome to being a PC beta tester. Enjoy your stay.
