Infamous: Second Son Review Thread

hey guys!
A friend of mine wants to buy the digital version of second son and is wondering if your able to resell it after he's done playing it.

Hard to believe this thread is so long. Looks to me that the game got decent reviews so I'm happy. I'm a fan of the previous titles so I'll pick mine up this weekend. People place too much importance on reviews. Bionic Commando 2009 scored a full 10 points lower than Second Son and it's one of my favorite games.

Too many people here rely on review scores. I've had more fun with 70 meta games than AAA 95 meta games over the past few years. At least rent it and see for yourself.

The scores seem fine to me. I'm not expecting true innovation, just the fun, aerobatic, run-and-gun play of the previous games.

A 81 is not a average of a bad game.

Based on averages
50 mediocre
60 ok
70 good
80 great
90 amazing

People only want to see 100... listen the world is not a perfect place some fail some do good some do best some do outstanding this was a best situation. Play it if you like the series don look on metacritic for a high score or your favorite website and if it doesnt get the score you think it should who cares if you like the series try it out. 81/100 is VERY good. I will be picking mine up and congrats sucker punch on your game.

I think its great that reviews are being hard on next gen games and encouraging devs to do more than just crank up pixels and shaders.

81 is still a great score and something to be proud of. Hopefully, Sucker Punch spends a bit more time advancing mission structure and the morality system in the next game.

Reviews exist to compare products, not to push innovation that doesn't yet exist. If many of the negative reviews didn't list "the gameplay doesn't feel next gen" over and over again, then there wouldn't be as many complaints. It's a ridiculous complaint on the part of critics. When the game would've scored better on the PS3 with worse graphics, there's something seriously wrong with the review system.

Quick question: Did Sessler compare it to Titanfall?

No.

Reviews exist to compare products, not to push innovation that doesn't yet exist. If many of the negative reviews didn't list "the gameplay doesn't feel next gen" over and over again, then there wouldn't be as many complaints. It's a ridiculous thing to complain about. When the game would've scored better on the PS3 with worse graphics, there's something seriously wrong with the review system.

Depends on the angle of the review. Games are not released in isolation; if someone wants to play Infamous, the review score will reflect that they might as well just go buy the second game on the PS3 if they want it.

I don't agree with the suggestion that it would have scored better on the PS3, though. I mean, it scored pretty well to begin with, but most reviews I read seem to be saying that the graphical upgrade is really the only justification given to it being on the PS4.

Yea the game was not that great neither was 2.

My biggest problem with Infamous 1 and 2 was the graphics and most importantly the image quality was so jarring and ugly that it distracted me the entire game.

2 was average at best, yet a lot of people start shitting babies when Sessler has the audacity to give this game a 3/5.

These threads are never GAF's finest moment.

So I was reading the Kotaku review and was kinda disappointed to hear that the city felt emptier than the previous two games. One of the main reasons I didn't really like the first two games was that the cities felt dull and depressing, and the people in them looked stupid. It totally threw me out of the "superhero in a open world city" experience.

Anybody who has played the game already, is the city still as lifeless as before, or is it better this time around? I can't tell from gameplay videos because 95% of the time the player is on the rooftops or in combat.

I'm glad that you are enjoying but I can't afford to waste $60 on subpar games.

Me and another 1m of players (based on the preorders!).

Anyway, I don't want to judge you and I respect your opinion/financial situation, but please, show more respect to all the people who worked hard for years to create this game. To call it subpar it's pretty disrespectful.

Pretty much. Infamous has always been a love it or hate it series. Though this time it has potential to sell more then the other two.

There's games like Sleeping Dogs, Saint's Row and Infamous and then there's stuff like GTA5, RDR (can't remember other titles right now).
The first games are stuff where developers just say "fuck it, let's dial stuff up to 11" and the last 2 are kinda more "serious" in their stories and characters.
But hey, I actually love them all :)

Nice :)

Yakuza fan too, you obviously have good taste. Hope we get Yakuza 5 :(

You just gotta learn how to let go.

A lot of you guys here perpetuate the view that 90+ Metacritic scores are the only "good" scores. It's really disappointing.

Yeah, scores are in line with the previous games and the people that gave it lower scores did so because it was so similar to the others. If you liked the previous games, you'll like this one too.

Aparently the day one patch makes the NPC population more dense.

This was ignorant tripe when people said it 10+ years ago and it's still ignorant tripe now. I've playing video games since the 70s, I was playing proto-"first person shooters" before Wolfenstein 3D and Doom kicked off the contemporary genre as we know it, and I played every FPS that came down the pike in their wake. And there had never been an FPS that had Halo's epic level design, dynamic AI, razor sharp arsenal balance, and so on. True that it didn't re-invent the fucking wheel. But it was Bungie's 4th FPS, not their first. They'd been making their own FPSes since before Doom existed. Halo was the culmination of everything they'd learned over a decade of game development. It's way more than you think it is.

And yeah, I was never all that excited about Infamous SS. I thought the first two were decent at best, nothing to write home about. I figured SS would be pretty much the same, just prettier. Then a couple days ago I heard Griesmer was the lead designer, and that's when I suddenly couldn't wait for Friday.

Being revolutionary is reinventing the wheel. Never said halo was bad, just that it didn't do anything other fps games before it had not already done. I loved halo, played it all the time. Still own the original xbox version. I was just saying it was not revolutionary in its gameplay, it was an evolution of the fps genre, like its tagline stated: Combat Evolved. It took the best ideas in the genre and combined them into one great game. That just isn't revolutionary, but still greatness in its own right.

Damn...talk about decline in scores..
Its crazy how opinions go apart, Infamous 1+2 were my favorite PS3 games and I would give each of them a score of around 95

It's the lowest of the Infamous games which to begin with weren't exactly the greatest. Sony used to release games that would get consistent 9s across the boards and it seems that with this gen they got lax (knack and KZ also got disappointing scores remember?). I was hoping they would release at least one true classic in the first year but it doesn't look likely :/

Well, take a look at the highest rated PS3 games. Have you seen a release on PS4 yet from Naughty Dog or Sony Santa Monica? If not, how can you make that statement? Those studios were responsible for most of Sony's highest rated games on PS3.

That said, Killzone: Shadow Fall was disappointing. Don't think too many people expected much from Knack.

I really hope The Order turns out great. It looks like fun, but if it doesn't score too well then I'd have to consider it a disappointing launch year, critically, for PS4 exclusives.

I think that's fair to say. I've always looked at scores like...<60 avoid. 70s play if you like that series. 80s you'll like it if you like that genre. 90s should play even if you're not a fan of the series or genre.

I personally can't wait.

Wow while I don't really value metacritic for what games I should buy and play, that sir is a great scale

A lot of you guys here perpetuate the view that 90+ Metacritic scores are the only "good" scores. It's really disappointing.

Which always surprises me seeing how few there actually are. Hell, with an 81 metascore, Infamous is currently the 2nd highest rated PS4 or Xbone exclusive game after Titanfall. Nothing anyone should be mad about.

If Infamous 1 and 2 were released today, they would get worse scores in comparison to what they got during the time they were actually released.
If Infamous as an IP was just starting now with SS, would it deserve higher scores? I'm a little dubious about this idea of the when of a release making a difference on the score of a game.

It's times like these I think a 5-star system like Giant Bomb's really works well. Can't stand the argument of a 0.5 score difference.

My interpretation is something like

1 star - Awful, irredeemable
2 stars - A game that is functional at it's most basic level, but too riddled with problems to be worth anything
3 stars - Game has some good qualities, but problems weigh it down. Some people may enjoy it
4 Stars - A great game that has a few minor issues
5 Stars - An exceptional game that achieves exactly what it intended to

As far as I'm concerned, a score decline under 15 or 20 points is essentially useless. A variation of 5 in both directions eliminates the decline, and review scores are not scientific enough to really hone in on minor details or study the significance of two whole points per entry.

Could be that people are just sick of seeing the same IP over and over again. It does look like a good game but at the same time its also "been there done that". I'm curious if Uncharted will end up same way.

Link to that info? Cuz I am not looking forward to an empty city.

On top of Paper Trail, the 300mb update also includes the Cole's Legacy Content Pack available for free to pre-order customers, as well as a variety of tweaks and improvements, including tweaks made to the difficulty, increased pedestrian and traffic density and graphical improvements.

He may be incendiary, but I prefer honest first impressions like TotalBiscuit where he just says "I'm enjoying it," or "I hate it." I don't need a score, it's an unscientific way to judge the game. Just give me a yea, nay, or maybe.

If you're genuinely curious, you could read the actual reviews. They're all in the OP if you're having trouble finding them. They're big blocks of text that explain subjective reasoning behind each of those scores you're making so much pointless fanboy noise about.

Agreed, I guess that's what I was getting at. I'd be fine with getting rid of numbers and scores entirely. Just tell me, how good is it?

Hahaha oh wow. You took the words right out of my mouth.

Based on inFamous sales as a franchise, the vast majority of gamers have NOT been there/done that.

So a game that gets mostly 8's and 9's is isn't worth 60? Its is attitudes like that that lead to unfair criticism of Internet forum users everywhere.
If it is on a platform you don't like 10 is not enough for you to buy, that's the mentality.

Now a 5/10 exclusive on a platform I own? The scores don't even matter I pre-ordered it anyway, its all about having fun.
