Infamous: Second Son Review Thread

I am really disappointed after reading the reviews.

This was going to be the game I bought the PS4 for. The one I had waited until now for to make my purchase. I bought an XONE at launch because the games were there for me. PS4 had nothing I wanted until Infamous 2.

I don't think that's going to happen now. I'll just play it at a friends and, for me, the wait continues.

You might want to read some of the reviews of those xbone games again.

More importantly, is there going to be a Preset or profile for the Sony Gold Headset for this game? About to get mine tomorrow, hoping to use em with this game.

Yes, there is.

Going even further, our team also worked closely with the PlayStation hardware team to develop a custom audio mix for the new PlayStation Gold Wireless Stereo Headsets which provides an outstanding example of how the audio mode enhances the sound experience.

Reviews look totally fine. It has a worse average than the other two games, but that's ok. Standards changed and reviewers try to use the full scale more often now, which is a good thing. It seems like the majority of reviewers even agree that's the best in the series and yet still give it a lower score, probably because the landscape and expectations changed quite a bit since the last Infamous.

I think that's totally acceptable. Not like it's getting any bad reviews really.

Truth. FFXIII-2 is a good example too. Just about every review said it was better, but the game got lower scores.

Just so everyone knows these reviews mean nothing.

This game is so god damn awesome and everyone should pick it up tomorrow.

It's the most fun I've had with a video game in a long time.

Why should I take your two sentence review over theirs? Especially since a consensus has been reached by people who play games for a living: that it's simply a good game but not a life changing experience.

Eurogamer

You do realize they scored Forza 5 7/10 http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-11-20-forza-motorsport-5-review

Ryse 5/10 http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-11-21-ryse-son-of-rome-review

Dead Rising 3 7/10 http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-11-18-dead-rising-3-review

Killer Instinct 7/10 http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-11-20-killer-instinct-review

Crimson Dragon 6/10 http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-11-21-crimson-dragon-review

Titanfall 8/10 http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-03-10-titanfall-launch-review

one scored better than inFamous SS.. yet you list those games a reason to buy a Xbox One.. and because inFamous SS gets a 7/10 from them you will not buy a PS4..?

I fail to see the logic behind this..

Wow, the amount of trolling and senseless talk in this thread is unbelievable. Some people are going out of their way to spoil a good thread. 80ish metacritic and people are complaining? Infamous devs are releasing a patch with 5 hours of gameplay, tuned boss fights, graphical improvements and people are complaining? Seriously, Wow.

Is this patch available when I first boot up the game?

Just so everyone knows these reviews mean nothing.

It's the most fun I've had with a video game in a long time.

I'll pick it up once my Titanfall honeymoon is over. Or whenever the first sale hits. This game looks fantastic, but I haven't played the first two (despite owning both....). Like Killzone, I'm not expecting to love the gameplay or story but to enjoy the graphics showcase and the open-world seattle :)

Only a few games ever get over 90. People expectations are too high. 81 average is good in my opinion...

It doesn't even have to be 'In Your Opinion', an 8/10 is pretty objectively 'good' by any definition.

Whether or not that meets expectations is another matter, but I'd be glad if the review scale moves downwards a bit to where really good, solid games get an 8/10 instead of a 8.5-9/10.

Eh, it's fair discussion. The first two big new-gen games since launch released within ten days of each other, one hyped to heck and back by the press and one with nary a mention from them. It's an interesting topic.

Tbh I think not. One is a FPS and the other is a SP 3rd person Action adventure.. Not even comparable.

You're right about that, standards for reviews have changed for the better. 9's and 10's aren't handed out like candy like they used to be, and that's a good thing. An 8 or a 7 means a lot more now.

Video game reviews are still insanely flawed, but it's one positive I've seen lately.

I do agree with this, the system was and is terrible, last gen way too many 9 + games around.

Haha that's what I was thinking.

Are people comparing the first person shooting gameplay to the third person action shooting gameplay?

If you don't think Titanfall has, it's certainly come the closest to.

what no?! Titanfall is super fun yeah, but its certainly not game play options that have been opend up by the new generation of hardware, there being a 360 version proves that. neighet is it a paradigm shift, its just an extension of the cod formula.

GAT V felt like next gen gameplay??? LMAo how? It's the same big standard open world structure we have seen for a decade. Not to mention adding stuff like stock market that in theory sounded good that were pointless and poorly implemented.

They improved just about every aspect of gameplay, especially shooting/vehicle handling, the interiors, few though they were, were stunningly realized and detailed, as was the entire state of Los Santos, you could switch between 3 characters super fast on the fly and even switch between them during live missions, you could decide how you wanted to plan your heists down to the people you wanted to bring, and although the online portion took a while to come together, it was still impressive having an entire separate experience aside from the single player.

It's just a damn well realized open world game, and nothing so far I've seen from next gen at all comes close to matching it in terms of that aspect.

But your opinion should mean something?

Not just mine, but everyone's opinion on Gaf means something.

Tons of people got the game early like me and I've only seen two people say they don't really like the game.

It's a fantastic game and I would argue that the impressions people have of the game here are more important than reviews.

There are 41 reviews that are 80 or better on Metacritic.

There are 11 that are 70 or less.

In looking at the makeup of those 41 reviews...there are a LOT more outlets in that group that I typically find my opinion siding with.

And a lot fewer (Eurogamer, pretty much) amongst the 11 lower reviews that I typically agree with.

Very much looking forward to this game...and these reviews, so far, do nothing to dissuade that.

Same here. In the aggregate reviewers dig the game. Those saying that it is "just more Infamous," like it is an insult I don't understand because I love Infamous. If it's like that, with better mechanics, then damn I am excited to get my hands on it tomorrow.

I hope people aren't salty over any of the reviews because to me they are mostly positive. I was impressed that a lot of reviewers were left craving more in the open world/ narrative department but still really liked the game. I take that as a challenge to Sucker Punch as a studio that "Hey, you guys can do awesome work, but you can do so much more and we see it in your game." I hope they take that critique to heart and grow as a studio to produce Naughty Dog levels of greatness.

About what I expected.

Why are people upset at 8s?
The same reason people have been upset about any game that has averaged 8's when they hoped it would garner Game of The Year consideration (or close to it). Disappointment causes defense mechanisms to kick up. It also prematurely causes people to write games off when they fail to meet perceived "hype", which can be frustrating in and of itself.

Is it? What was the top selling game last month? COD. How did it review? Shitty.

Reviews don't determine a game's success.
I wouldn't go that far. Reviews supported by grass roots word of mouth can drive sales. I've certainly bought many a game purely on the strength of reviews and GAFer opinion. Who hasn't? Unless you're downloading a demo of every game you have interest in or using Gamefly or something, you have few options to try before you drop $60 into the abyss. Even in this thread, many have gone from "lean buy" to "lean wait". Actual people withholding their actual wallets.

As for your counterpoint, CoD is a unique case. It defined FPS console gaming last gen with a couple of classics and became the biggest brand. It gets the benefit of the doubt sales and sales from people who are simply comfortable with their system.

For franchises that haven't ever touched that level of acclaim (or for niche franchises), reviews will still impact those who are on the fence or can otherwise be swayed by a review. Games like GTA, Halo, Gran Turismo, CoD and Madden get passes that they earned long ago and will require a series of stinkers to lose. I wouldn't use them as examples because those franchises have a special status. inFamous is not among such franchises and will likely never be.

Infamous gameplay is excellent..............the powers are a blast.

quite possible. Also gta v and tlou coming out last year didnt exactly help games coming out in comparision. Both of them just blew things totally out into orbit.

Eh, I wouldn't say Infamous has gone largely uncovered like you suggest. There's been a fair bit of coverage and there's probably only so much media outlets can do given how Sucker Punch wanted to keep so much of the game under wraps until launch.

Am I missing something here? Is 81 a bad score? I don't get how people are knocking this game like it's the worst thing to ever hit the system. I'm so confused, guys.

I agree. Damn I was hoping for an 90+, since Infamous looked so damn good. Reading some of the reviews, the graphics may be pretty but the game play may not be good enough to warrant a full $60. :/ Considering canceling my pre-order, but will just wait to see some video reviews, and read a few more reviews.

I'm torn right now.

Just play the game. It is going to be a rare event seeing games get 90's on metacritic again. Reviewers recently have been attempting to use their entire scale for credibility sake, and there are waaaaaaay too many upstart sites that already have no credibility. There are even games that get 90's on metacritic that still may not be for you. There are people that find Last of Us mediocre and people that feel the same about GTA V.

So long as a game doesn't have a metacritic in the 60's or below I think it is worthwhile to see for yourself if you will like it, especially if you are a fan of the genre (open world) or type of game (super hero) or both (Infamous).

What salt? Game was massively over hyped, can play on my PC, not worth 60 bucks, not near as good as all the pre-release hype, just another COD template shooter.

Exactly what I was talking about haha.

Eh, it's fair discussion. The first two big new-gen games since launch released within ten days of each other, one hyped to heck and back by the press and one with nary a mention from them. It's an interesting topic.

To me it just looks like bitter fans trying to dismiss someone's opinion because they liked X game better than Y game.

Improving shooting, vehicle handling is not next gen gameplay its what every sequel does. Nothing about the gameplay felt next gen felt like another open world, with linear mission objectives GTA game.

I am sad about the weak story & characters development. It seems like it was a big focus from watching the trailers, so what went wrong?

More than credibility sake, it's the fact that if they blow all the 10/10 at the beginning of the gen, it will get stale too soon.

Overall, these are good scores. I can only gratulate to SP for delivering such a great game and I can't wait to play my copy.

Good work SP, but now start to work on something that has MP :)

Please.

Compare GTA3 to GTA5 and then inFamous 1 to inFamous: Second Son. GTA5 managed to maintain what people loved about GTA3 but really push everything forward in terms of narrative, gameplay, open world, graphics, etc. It felt fresh and new yet still was a "GTA" game.
