Infamous Second Son has gone gold

The graphical downgrade since E3 2013 also bothers the hell out of me.

there is the Cole's Legacy DLC, you can play that first
apparently you can't access that DLC until you have all the powers. a sucker punch guy said it during the ign livestream.

watchdogs 2.0. when will people learn what you see early in development is probably not what you're gonna get at release.

The game overall looks great that's for sure. I have two issues tho

1-The UI looks really bad
2-It feels like the city is too silent? Dunno what's up with the mix but it's sounds weird.

Are all the civilians mutes? Kind of awkward how they just run or cower but don't make a sound.

They made various comments in the previous titles. If you were good, they'd applaud and cheer you on; if you were an asshole, they'd scatter and diss you.

I could be dead wrong since i'm not following this "graphical downgrade" thing much, but to me, speaking only about the image you posted, looks like a different time of day only.

There was another example in this thread.

Could be ?

There is no downgrade, also the new screens are from the YouTube video, not offical, but they do look more detailed to me but the environment looks different and different time of day. IMO

That only looks like they simply changed the time of day. There are still shadows on the characters, but instead of bright sunlight coming from above (causing darker shadows), there is light from a sunrise/sunset coming from the side, causing the left side of the characters to be in subtle shadow. You can even clearly see shadows projected on the railing/banners in the second "downgrade" pic. You can clearly see the collars of their coats casting shadows on their neck, and Delsin's hat casting shadow on his forehead. And there's still clearly ambient occlusion going on. I don't see a downgrade.

Why are they still pimping the preview build? Let it go SP! And arn't those comparison pics taken from the youtube video, and looks like a different time of day so that also has an affect on lighting.

That's not a downgrade... That's just a different time of day.

Some folks here are persistent with their "downgrade" narrative. Maybe if they say it enough times it might become true.

Only downgrade seems to be the lack of self-shadowing on the characters, which is odd. Maybe it's in the patch? Different time of day could possibly account for it depending on where the sun is. The rest looks just as good or better (except in some cases of detail that look to be the case of a more compressed video capture on the new ones).

Compressed youtube caps at a different time of day. Of course it looks different.

Edit: also of course those comparisons are from the exemplary work of dual shockers /s

This, the rest of it seems to be just a change in the environment but it looks like they removed the self-shadowing.

There is clearly self shadowing still going on. Look at their collars casting shadow on their necks, Delsin's hat casting shadow on his forehead, etc. The lighting angle is completely different, the light isn't direct sunlight coming from above anymore. It's softer light from a sunrise/sunset coming from a lower angle.

Well if it is just a different time of day why would they change it to a time when the cut scenes look noticeably worse...
(since their is no day and night cycle and it is pre set)

I will say those comparison photos do make for an interesting game of "Spot the Differences" lol. Like in the first set the tree on the left at E3 had no leaves, and now it does.

What if its not? Maybe if you take too long to get to a point, the time of day changes in your cut scene?

I have no idea, but it would be a novelty

I think that's one of the totems and the leaves are from a hanging plant nearby or something.

It doesn't look noticeably worse. It looks different. In fact the harsher lighting in the earlier shots looks worse from a cinematography standpoint. Maybe there are story/tonal reasons that this is set during sunrise or sunset now.

Ah, yeah, you're right. I'd say the different time of day is the culprit there.

I'm happy to see the change here, actually, because I thought that part in the E3 2013 trailer was too bright and high-contrast. New one looks more natural, and I like the new softer shadowing in the environment.

I think the textures look ever so slightly better in E3 2013 (which could be due to the bad quality of the capture of the new stuff), but I agree that most of the different is probably time of day related. I just watched some of the first 20 minutes of the game and it takes place with the sun at a relatively low angle (which explains the softer, sunset-y coloring).

Or it's pre-baked.

There's also clearly more environmental detail in the second shots, like the tree leaves on the left in the first already pointed out. In the second there is the banners along the railing now, and some overgrown grass on the little hut thing in the background on the left. More texture detail on the brothers coat (nametag, badge, shoulder patch). Downgrade? Looks like a categorical upgrade.

Or it's pre-baked.

Sure, let's just say things now, like pre-baked self shadowing.

Are you serious? Please tell me you're not serious. The first images have the sun up top. This means around lunch time so more shadowing in places like Delsin's eyes.

Your "downgraded" images have a different set of lighting altogether. Seems to be sunset, which would not be casting as much harsh shadows on both characters.

Please do not jump to conclusions and scream downgrade without justification.

Yeah the vid is 720p and the E3 trailer was at 1080p.

Seriously. That article is getting a ton of traction and it's comparing screens from a friggin' youtube video.

ah you're right. Still spotting the differences reminds me of those Highlight magazines as a kid. Like the March photos all show Reggie with a patch on his arm and chest.

And why are there streamers up the hand rail and along the roof!? March version must be the Party Edition.

Wait, what!? Are they claiming that Infamous got a downgrade since E3?

To be fair, the article makes no such claim. The author was stressing other differences such as time of day, locations, etc.

Of course, the comments immediately erupted into "downgrade!"

New screens looks better. Self shadowing looked way too overdone on the old screens, like he had makeup under his eyes.

That's lovingly referred to as raccoon eyes in the video/photo world, and it's something you try to avoid whenever possible when shooting something because it looks like garbage. That's why they'll always place a white/reflective bounce card under people when shooting out in sunlight like that, to bounce light back into their face and fill in shadows.
