And if the ending is really bad, the thread will be a mess of people pulling the Lost card of "it's not about the mystery, it's about the characters."

I don't expect we will get a bad finale, but it certainly is possible.

But True Detective IS about the characters. The show hadn't even aired and Nic Pizzolatto already had said they he didn't care about serial killers, and that the show was about the characters.

I just started watching this show on Tuesday an I'm all caught up now. I didn't know there were only going to be 8 episodes (figured there would be 10) but goddamn is this show good. The 4th episode, where Rust goes undercover, is probably my favorite so far and the one that elevated the series to one of my favorites ever. That final action scene with the huge shootout in the neighborhood was amazing. It was a better action scene than nearly any hollywood movie I've seen in years. Also, Rust is one of my favorite TV characters in a while. I used to hate McConaughey lol.

Is this show confirmed for a second season yet?

Except true detective is about the charactees. The cop out argument for lost you're talking about was 'its not about the destination but the ride'. Lost fell off lomg before the finale.

Will we be disappointed? I'd say it's possible.

People who are expecting some major "oh shit" twists, probably. on the action/intensity? I don't think so.

I just want to see their story through and the result of all this for Marty and Rust. I'm sure I won't be, personally.

I feel like not getting complete closure would be fitting. Maybe the sprawl of this entire conspiracy extends too far for these two take down. It would validate rusts philosphies with one big exercise in futility. I feel the show has largely validated most of Rusts core beliefs, his cynical nature is with good reason. He doesn't place faith in any institutions whether it be religion or the state police/government and the viewers have no reason to either. A cult isnt really any differrent from religion and one of the more seemingly righteous men in the show has lost faith "all I wanted was to be nearer to God, only nearness.... Silence. ". Lousiana state pd cant be trusted at all. We live in a world where nothing is solved".

How do most noirs and cosmic horrors end are they mostly tragic?

Most Cosmic Horrors, and/or Gothic Fiction ends with the story concluding either semi-happily but with a doubt that evil was vanquished (like in Dracula), or the Protagonist is either defeated or goes insane (Most Lovecraft), or the ending is ambiguously tragic (Arthur Gordon Pym).

That's been my experience. Based on these, I kinda feel that it will play out one of those three ways.

Ok, I figured as much.

Just started watching this on HBO Nordic with my wife. Holy shit that first episode was good. Holy, holy, holy shit.

I haven't been so intrigued by a tv-serie since Deadwood, The Wire or maybe even since Sopranos.

I'm really looking forward to the rest. I need an apple-tv or something though, because I can't find HBO (nordic) apps on my Wii U or other tv-connected gadgets. :/ We watched the first episode together on our iPad, which is obviously not an ideal situation.

Am I the only one that really wants to see a show called Nordic on HBO after reading this?

Got my Mondo poster just in time for the finale

Where from? It's my favorite piece of art work aside from the yellow skull someone here made.

8 episodes is so short :(

Why couldn't we have another 5 after tonight for 13?

Because then we'd have to deal with a subplot where Maggie steals random objects from stores to get Marty's attention.

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Rustin Carcosa wgah'nagl fhtagn.

On one hand it's sad that it's only 8 episodes, on the other this allowed them to make the show very tight and the whole thing very focused and top-notch. More episodes would probably lead to more needless filler. It's fine as it is. The episodes are longer than most other series too, so this should be considered too.
