It makes one or two decent points but I'd say a few things in reply. First up is that True Detective's male bias isn't a 'structural necessity' as Nic put it - he built the thing, he could have made anything he wanted. I've loved True Detective but it's fine to point out this flaw in his design - his writing isn't impeccable anyway. Beyond the representation issue, there is some occasionally blunt writing throughout the episodes which I haven't loved. So I appreciate the faults in True Detective without damning the whole thing, cos there is a lot to love.

Also, the writer seems unclear on exactly what they are talking about at points. The 'male dominated writer's room' of True Detective seems like a sarcastic comment, but they also don't address that the writer's room of Girls is largely female and is headed up by Lena. It isn't wrong, it's just sloppy analysis of what's going on and I think it pays to be specific when you're talking about this kind of thing otherwise we all start debating about faulty information. Most of Girls nudity is Hannah, and I wouldn't say it is objectifying - it's purposefully incidental.

Got my Mondo poster just in time for the finale

watched all the episodes this week/weekend. it's glorious

my single favorite moment was when Rust calmly told that woman to kill herself

It sucks its already over tonight. On the other hand Ill be able to marathon the whole season now.

Regardless of how good the ending is, this thread will probably be a mess with people expressing disappointment. Ohhhhhh internet.

You're saying my CRAZY theory about how Maggie's in on it won't be correct!?! ARGH NERD RAGE

Meeting up with my buddy at 1. Gonna go get some Lone Star and we're marathoning the first 7 episodes in anticipation of tonight's finale.

That could be said of any literary work. It wouldnt be a true auteur experience if the author felt the need to bend to societys whims. The show has two main characters, one being a hyper-masculine individual and Rust is.... Rust. So because of this i would consider it a structural necessity. Unless you want to simply contrive up a third character, a woman, to make everyone feel better. I'd rather the author of a work derrive genuine inspiration than to contrive up some silly subplot/characters at the expense of the story. The male bias is imo a xo sequence of the story being told(mudered women and chilsren), and a fixation on the two main characters, none of the tertiary characters are as fleshed out.

So Hannibal is considered to be great? That's good to hear. I saw some screenshots of it recently and it looks really well shot.

PLEASE GOD WATCH IT its ratings are not good and the show is legit great. I suggest watching first season on blu-ray or hidef digital first though.

And if the ending is really bad, the thread will be a mess of people pulling the Lost card of "it's not about the mystery, it's about the characters."

I don't expect we will get a bad finale, but it certainly is possible.

yep, and True Detective is definitely NOT about its characters at all.

The argument with LOST was sort of true, but not really. LOST was very much about the characters, it was a character driven story (go back and watch Season 1, the majority of the season was flash backs, character moments, and the island mythology only served the personal narratives).. The problem with LOST is that the mythology crossed over into plot, and therefore needed to be answered. And it went even beyond that, LOST had actual plot points set up, that they never answered.

True Detective hasn't really provided any mythology that has crossed over into plot. Most of it is setting and background. People can read into things as much as they want, but most of the stuff in True Detective is setting. The only thing that you could argue is, Carcosa and the Yellow King have become plot once it became a repeated element in the case. But those two elements can't be assumed to be an actual person or place.
