Loved the episode until the last shot. Loved Rust and Mart teaming up and making peace before jumping into the fray in the finale.

That shot of Rust in the storage locker with the words behind is iconic as fuck, well composed and says everything about the character at that point, surrounded by his ramblings.

That last scene though, was the least favourite of the entire series. Two bumblefuck detectives just miss the killer as he stands a gives a parting remark to himself? Feels like an ending to a terrible X-files episode. I just don't like it and will probably skip past that scene to the finale upon rewatch.

Bring on Rust and Mart storming the evil fortress in the finale.

I'm getting really nervous for the finale. The finale episode of this season is called Form and Void, which is a quote from Genesis 1:2, and it's gotten me worried about these characters.

And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

I'm not expecting a happy ending, but I really hope it's not one that'll leave me depressed for the fate of these characters. :(

In their defense, Rust and Marty missed him too. And it's not as if there were an APB out for redneck riding a lawnmower.

The scene where we're first introduced to his P.I. office was worse for me, full of dread. Isn't it in some strip mall? That tacky big ass logo and I don't think Rust had to be so concerned with other employees nosing in. I'm not so sure there is anyone else there, not full time anyway. It's funny that for all his antisocial tendencies, it's Rust that has a running partner when we fast forward to present day, Marty just has some old connections to sleezebag cops.

Then they cut to Maggie with her big ass house and the framed photos over the fireplace and the nice pressed clothes... I was piiiiissed. Just had to take a giant shit on everyone on your way out and now look at you with your fancy life! *shakes fist in empty rage*
Don't really understand the anger towards Maggie.

Rust makes Rust sad.

Hell, the core of his personal narrative is the struggle to stop being such a downer all the time.

I don't understand the frustration with the two "new" detectives letting the perpetrator on the lawn mower go.

The scars are subtle and there's no APB on the guy. They were clearly preoccupied with something else and didn't give the guy much thought. The two also don't possess the same knowledge and perspective as Rust and Hart. They both probably still suspect Rust.

Also, there would be no conclusion to the third act if the two fucking caught him. How underwhelming would that be? Clearly, all the parties involved will be playing a part in this finale. Just let it play out.

It's not about them not catching them. It's the cheese/coincidence of it. It didn't bother me to be honest.

While I can certainly understand criticism that perhaps that scene was a bit on the nose or out of step with the sort of overall tone that's been established, I actually liked it. Dude mowing his flat circle as the "bumblefuck detectives" begin down the same road as Rust and Marty. Not exactly subtle, but I smiled anyway.

preview spoilers as related to the first episode

rust talks about contemplating the idea of allowing your own crucifixion

So it is probably him crucified on the bed in the preview for the finale

Rust noooooooooooooooooooooooo!

The finale will tear out hearts

Don't really understand the anger towards Maggie.

It was a little tongue in cheek, I'm mostly still sore over the episode she had with Rust a few weeks back. But, you can't say that juxtaposition wasn't deliberate, same as that line about classing the place up from Rust later. There's some loyalty there on my part, I dunno.

Rust is Jesus. He kept spouting a bunch of stuff that pissed people off, went of wandering in the wilderness, and has come back sporting long hair and is going to save humanity. Marty is Judas obviously and will kill him in the end.

I guess. Rust isn't some "good" person or heroic character either, which is why I didn't see it myself.

Also- Hollywood prospectus (podcast) NAILED my thoughts on this ep. Chris Ryan echoed my meh reaction to this ep- it felt like a lush, well acted procedural. A-tier actors doing B-tier material. I want this show to be more than just a procedural- but I guess we'll see how it pans out next Sunday.

Just curious here, care to elaborate on the Maggie hate?

EDIT: nvm. Question has been answered :P

ehh im not seeing the big deal with the ending of the past episode, another solid episode for me, nice to see rust and marty back together.

Actually, Rust is as close to a good guy as this show has. We can argue about him reciprocating to Maggie and I would say that was weakness from a desperate dude more than immorality. Other than that, he's been on the right side of things as far as I can recall. He's caustic sure, but indiscriminate niceness is overrated anyhow.

Can someone jog my memory where we saw Courir de Mardi Gras photos before? I remember they were in somebody's house but I can't remember whose exactly.

The episode was fine, a bit worse than previous ones but still great. It's nice that the pieces are all falling into place now but hell, it blows my mind it's all gonna be over next week.

Dora Lang's mother had a photo of Dora as a little girl in the woods surrounded by men with tall hats riding on horses in her home.

Hollie shyt, just realized the young lady' that asks to get fucked up the ass by Marty and sends him a sexy selfie with her 2002 silver, 1mp camera phone... That ultimately destroys Marty's and Maggie's marital vows is the same "18 year old" mistress from the trailer, whoore park in episode 2!

...they stated that very explicitly

Ok I need to pay attention more I guess, I admit I prepare dinner while watching this show, but I do tend to rewind it over half dozen times per episode, kinda makes things confusing when the show itself doesn't follow a chronological order.

Also what I really like about the show is not just the jumps in times (eras) also tricking the viewer with geographical locations. The two black detectives were essentially walking between two rooms in the same building while interviewing Cohle n' Hart right?

Yeah, that part felt a bit off to me too. Otherwise, fantastic episode.

Human life makes Rust sad.

It is, after all, a cosmic mistake.

I want to invite Rust to my parties.

lol

What? No. They were interviewed on different days. There are dates. The show doesn't trick anyone. Where are you getting all this nonsense from? Lol.

I'm not saying they trick it with dates but, didn't we eventually find out they were being interviewed in the same building? The detectives kept looking at each other and leaving the room and coming back (one of them leaving the room). How does Rust track (chase) down Marty on the road and ask him to buy him a beer, weren't they dismissed around the same time?

The interviews occur five days apart; Rust's is the 26th of April 2012 while Marty's is the 1st of May. They are both in the police department but there is no walking between rooms (both are interviewed in different rooms certainly but not simultaneously, there is no overlap) because each interview lasts less than the entire day that they're brought in.

Watched it last night and I liked it. The scene where Marty is watching that tape and leaving it up to the viewer to fill in the blanks was well done. My stomach turned a bit, creepy and disgusting as shit.

Really really love True Detectives. Can't shake the feeling that building the mythology of it is a lot more satisfying than the conclusion to it will be.

not to go too off topic, but during season 1 of the walking dead when they still had Breaking Bad and Mad Men in there back pocket, it looked like AMC could at least challenge HBO in the present. Obviously they didn't have the prestige or catalog of HBO, but at least be considered a worthy rival now.

Walking Dead turned out to be a mess, Breaking Bad is completed and most of their new shows are average to terrible but I understand why people saw AMC as a potential challenger at one point. Clearly that didn't pan out.

For me, its HBO >>>>>> FX > AMC > Showtime as far as the premium networks go.

One line from Rust I really liked that I've seen no one comment on was to Maggie.

"It never sat right with me back then......you asking me to lie to you about him (Marty)".

Just that brutal, cutting honesty we expect from Rust.

Wait, let me get straight. You guys have to pay for FX and AMC to receive them? That's a lot of paid channels...

We don't pay for them in the same way we do for HBO and Showtime. Their not broadcast OTA, so we have to pay for a cable package which includes them.

does anyone have a shot of the yellow king when they first saw him?

didn't notice the scars at all at the time.

AMC and FX aren't really 'premium' channels necessarily, but they are a part of more expensive (or at least more than basic) cable/satellite packages.

I think Comcast and the like often consider HBO/Showtime/Cinemax/Starz, etc as premium channels.

In terms of content, I think there's still a bit of a limit with nudity, language, sex and the like that AMC can't do that won't apply to Cinemax or HBO.
