Was he? Well shit looks like I need to pay more attention, in that case it must have been obvious that they were about to perform a sacrifice.

Errol being the killer? I doubt that's a red herring since Nic Pizzalato said he's not interested in trying to trick the audience, I mean leading the audience to believe Errol is the killer and than revealing that it was actually someone else, it seems like it would be doing just that.

Plus on the inside video towards the end when Marty and Rust are on the boat, Nic mentions that we get our definitive look at our killer.

It's not the first red herring. And it won't be the last.

I love how people were calling lawnmower man being involved the second his ass showed up. There was way too much focus on that dude for that one scene. Something seemed fishy.

I have a feeling one of them is going to die next episode. I think it'll be Marty.

So when Nic we get a look at our killer at the end, there should be air quotes around that, because it's not the full truth?

If you think Errol being the killer is a red herring which could be possible I guess, then I would have to wonder who the real killer is, especially since there's only one episode left.

I still think Errol is the killer since he has the scars on his face and there are at least 2 different characters who talk a tall man with scars on his face, that was seen walking with Dora Lang. I concede I could be wrong, but revealing that Errol isn't actually the killer would reek of a cheap twist and an attempt at trying to trick the audience, but hey maybe you're right and I'm sure if that's the case it'll still be great so long as they nail the execution and have a solid explanation.

Masterpiece-fucking-television, so good.
Really? I've been so high on this show, but this week felt supremely unexceptional to me. Not bad of course. But fairly standard plotting, lots of expository dialogue, and overly concerned with moving fully into 2012 and setting up the pieces for the finale. Not a memorable ep IMHO.

Given how the internet has been suspecting lawnmower guy for weeks now that last scene was weak. It was probably a lot more thrilling to people who don't follow speculation theories.

Ehhh I never thought this show was going for a "gotcha" moment. I was just kind of bummed that we have this huge reunification of the two leads, and the majority of their interactions are expository and plot driven. They aren't given much screen time to reflect on the past, nor do we see much of them just hanging doing non-case stuff, even if it's just small moments. In fact, much of this is reduced to a few sentences with flashbacks. I dunno. Characters seemed to just reunite as if nothing had happened/nothing had changed.

I think the camera panning around so The Lawnmower Man can dramatically declare, to himself, that his family has been around a long time might've been shit regardless of anticipation.

The writer said the entire premise of the show was fairly obvious from the beginning and that they weren't trying to outsmart the viewers.

Sorry everyone, no more Rustin Cohle goodness after next week.

McConaughey not doing a second season of True Detective

Seems like the story will be tied up next week. I always expected it, but nothing concrete has come forward about Season 2 so some were saying it was always a possibility MM might return in some form.

I liked this one quote from the article

Matthew McConaughey said:
“It’s probably airing right now. Has anyone seen it? I made the thing … and I’m not sure what happens.”

I kind of think Marty's shit-life flashback was to show that he really had nothing going for him. His office doesn't seem that prestigious, he mentions to Rust how he can't afford certain services/access to databases anymore, so it doesn't seem that far fetched that he could allow himself to dive right back into the investigation. Pretty much all these two have left are the investigation and each other. And you have to remember, even when they were on better terms, they didn't really "hang out" too much.

We've known that this was a self contained season for a long time brother.

What? They've been completely upfront about each season being self-contained since the first episode.

On wikipedia it's described as an anthology crime drama so it makes sense that they would have a different story and cast each season.

I loved it.

The only aspect I struggled with this week was I couldn't remember who all the characters were, could have used one quick flashback to remind me who the Sheriff was in 95. Even after the episode, I still can't place him.

He's one of the cops in the CID office - one of their coworkers.

He was the guy Rust slapped in the first episode.

And Jesus it's really amazing how young they made those two look. MM almost looks like another person in that scene.

We've known that this was a self contained season for a long time brother.

I know that it is a self-contained season. Some were hoping that the same actors would come back in different roles, like they do on American Horror Story sometimes. I still have to explain to some people what an Anthology Series exactly is because they assume that the characters of Cohle and Marty would be back next season.

Pretty great episode. Loved pretty much all the Marty/Rust stuff. Woody was on fire this episode, he does some super convincing facial expressions at points. The video tape scene was so well done... showed just enough to be creepy as fuck, and left the rest up to our imagination (based on Woody's reaction). Kind of undecided on the big reveal at the end... I honestly can't say if I would have figured it out on my own, but GAF revealed it to me a while back. So as is I'm not really shocked but not all that disappointed either. But man, I can't believe there's only 1 left. They're going to have to do some exceptional shit in order to tie this together in a satisfying way in one hour.

What is there to reflect on, though? It's always been about business with Marty and Rust. Marty points out that Rust asking him how he's been is the first time Rust's asked him something like that. That's just not how they do things. I was actually surprised that they talked about that kind of stuff at all (with Rust telling him he was up in Alaska, etc.) They're united by something bigger than the both of them - their unfinished business with the case. Marty practically pulls a gun on Rust and is about to walk out until he sees the photos of the kids and the video of the Fontenot girl.

I can definitely see being disappointed by that, but I think it's pretty true to the story and who Rust and Marty are.

Errol is involved. I think. But I think for the last episode, we're going right to the beginning. And not just any beginning. But genesis quote beginning.

As regards the ending, all I really hope is that the show draws to a close with the two detectives talking in their car.

which in all likelihood means neither is dead.

I'm glad that even though the show has reached the current timeline, it still has moments of fractured narrative like when Rust describes infiltrating the estate or how it shows Marty and Maggie meeting before it shows Marty watching the tape.

That all sounds good to me. I hope I didn't seem snarky before, I was only attempting to understand your viewpoint, and you're right, it's possible that Errol isn't the killer but is involved, I look forward to finding out next week.

You've a right to the more justified conclusion. ;)

When Rust and Marty were talking about their current life, I got hit with a wave of emotions.

Specifically when Rust said that "no girlfiend, just work and go home". I can't describe it, just got a very real and raw emotion from it.

The part that got me was when Marty was talking about not looking for a serious relationship, and then it cuts to him on match.com
