True Detective - McConaughey/Harrelson crime series - S2 starts June 21st

I hate crime series usually, but having read and watched some stuff from the op this might change. Sure, I have seen nothing, but going by the small stuff I have seen the story seems interesting, the acting top notch and I really like the camera work.
 
Thinking of starting to watch this but I'm a bit afraid to read the topic because of spoilers. What other tv shows would you compare this? What other similar shows you guys like?

Exactly, this is why it isn't the Marty or Rust we are viewing, it's actully past-Marty, who realised the case was unsolvable in his lifetime, and recognised the damage this was causing for Rust. Due to this, he waited for the next revolution of the circle (ie for time to begin again) and sacrificed himself (because Rust commented how he contemplates self-sacrifice) by being the killer in a case which present-Rust and present-Marty would be able to solve. Surviving his own death and living into the next cycle caused horrible facial scarring and altered the colour of his ears, while making him susceptible to the posession by demons. It all makes so much sense! This explains why Reggie Ledoux had My Little Pony clothes

It's hard to make a comparison I feel. Perhaps I would say it's closest to if a single case from the show "Hannibal" was turned into season-long investigation. It posesses the narrow focus of something like "Breaking Bad" (strictly focusing upon two characters similar to Breaking Bad's focus on its leads), the palpable atmosphere of "Hannibal", the careful pacing and cleverly structured and multi-layered story of "The Wire", and striking cinematography with meticulous attention to details. I'd rather not go into details specifically, because not only would they not do it justice as it would sound merely like a 'typical', generic crime show (when it is so much more), but it would also potentially dampen potential enjoyment. I would recommend watching the opening titles here and if it captures any interest (in relation to the tone or cinematography) to consider watching the first episode. It's only eight episodes long, six of which have already aired, so it's not a major time sink in comparison to something like The Shield or The Sopranos. It's extremely consistent so if you like the opening episode you'll almost certainly like the rest, whereas if you fervently dislike it it is unlikely to change.

I don't think any other crime show has done this kind of setting and/or 15 yr story.

but
Hannibal
because it has compelling characters, tons of eye and food pornography, super creep factor
 
I'm on episode 2 of True Detective, and just saw the scene with Alexandra Daddario.

More closely resembles the movie Zodiac than any show I can think of off the top of my head.

The wait was tough this week, it's gonna be impossible for the finale.
 
I'm at the office, totally contemplating bailing to finish my work from home online with a marathon of the last six episodes in the background. Everybody in my department is so locked into True Detective now that I could tell them exactly the rationale for working remotely and they'd probably let it slide.

I'm hoping tonight's episode has
a brutal, fifteen minute, hypercut montage detailing every lead and piece of evidence puzzled together with Rust narrating every step like Sam Spade when he takes Marty to his Batcave of a shed.
Seems the perfect payoff for an audience that's been hanging on every subtle inference and revelation since the start of the series.

Also I think this show has the lowest amount of nudity in the history of HBO, but then again I didn't see Carnivale, I need to get on that.

This show is turning into Lost as time passes without canon to lean on. I honestly hope we get to the point where we know who the killer isn't by tonight.
 
Got behind in my watching and now am completely caught up. Reading back through this thread the amount of theories are insane. Can't wait for tonight.

This show knows what it is unlike lost. Shiiiet, its only 8 episodes. Aside from fans fervently deconstructing the shows I don't see a comparison.
 
It was dumb on Rust's part to ask about the scars being on the face to the catatonic girl. It was not relevant. Giant+Scars IS the suspect, no need to ask where they were. He could have gotten more out of her.

The title sequence unfolds chronologically and the notes refer to a serial killer.

I saw 12 years a slave an honestly they could have put any black actor in that role and they would have got a nomination. I thought Chiwitel Elijiofir did a good job but nothing that really stood out to me.

This has been noted before (regarding the parallel) but the notes specifically regarding this image has nothing to do with a serial killer. In fact, unless I'm missing something, there isn't a single mention of "serial killer" within the notes, or interview, only in the summary at the top introducing people to "True Detective" (which has nothing to do with the creative director) and the note that it uses the "killer's iconography of death" (ie antlers); I'm quite perplexed as to what you actually would suggest is 'spoilery worthy' as, reading it thoroughly, I have no idea what it is you're picking up from it.

Hunting and Gun Sights refers to the second image of the deers being hunted as opposed to the initial one, just to clarrify to anyone confused by this. In addition, it's made quite clear within the summary that

I'm incredibly confused as to what relevance you feel the introduction has to implications of Marty being the killer because they, if anything, emphasize the opposite by placing emphasis on the personal apocalypse of each character and how they are 'broken/divided people'. Marty's daughter is a 'broken person', either through her father's absence, and own promiscuity, or the theorised possibility of her having been abused as a child, while this contributes to Marty's 'personal apocalypse' and further emphasizing the strong religious imagery within the show. Marty being the killer makes absolutely no sense considering he left Rust alive, no mention was ever made of him by Ledoux who was even considering going for his gun, the alleged hunting line being ad-libbed (yes, it was kept in, but you don't form a major plot point, and one of the only indications of him being a killer, around an ad-libbed line), we would have missed a significant portion of Marty's character undermining all of the effort put into the character study, Marty's absence being related to his affair and not secret murders, his desire to keep the case instead of throw it away to a task force who would bury it, he interrupts Cohle after Ledoux's description is given which leads them to a far more relevant lead, the poster a reference to time being a flat circle as it starts again, and the murder emotionally driven as he doesn't even know that Cohle was talking to him because he was inside the shed (and as he exitted Cohle was giving orders to "put your hands on your head" to the other assailant). Does the possibility of Marty being someway connected to the killer exist? Sure. Is Marty the killer? Not without underpinning his development, destroying his character, and cheating the audience with non-sensical moves.
 
I think anyone who thinks the show is going to have some sort of grand Marty is the killer/ or other huge "I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING" style twist are setting themselves up for disappointment.

I see this getting a more breaking bad style end.

well the difference to breaking bad is that its not a whodunit. we already knew everyone involved, we didnt know what the fianle would look like, but it was a how and not a who.

its quite different with true detectice, there probably will be a who, and it might be underwhelming.
although I definitely would also welcome some kind of "the pledge"ending where the killer and the cult people are never caught, but the detective(s) spend the rest of their lives obsessively chasing them, but never succeed.
