Sorry, I don't like to go into an OT and shit on the subject usually, as it's full of fans that will accuse you of being a hipster or troll, so I saw my chance and took it lol!

Back on topic, did I say how great it was to hear Primus in ep4? Well it was... Great.

What are the chances that McConaughey receives his Oscar while episode 7 is airing?

That would be pretty excellent. The money does seem to be on him winning, so it would be disappointing if it doesn't happen.

I wonder how many people will eschew the parties so they can get home to get their True Detective on afterwards :D

@DeathCubeK. I hear you about Hannibal. Similar sentiments echoed earlier in the thread when it came up.

Just a quick point regarding negative viewpoints and OTs - dissent is always fine provided you back up your argument and keep it civil. Official topics aren’t meant to only be a cheering squad, and discussion of a show’s flaws is welcome and somewhat necessary as long as you’re not a jerk about it. On the flip side, people should make an effort to address opposing viewpoints rather than dog piling posters that they don't agree with. Anything that’s universally positive or negative can get a little dull anyway. Please just keep it in the appropriate thread.

I haven't seen Dallas Buyers Club, but I saw 12 Years a Slave. Chiwitel Elijiofor will be incredibly difficult to beat this year.

McConaughey has already won in the Screen Actors Guild and the Golden Globes. If he loses in the Academy Awards it will actually be seen as an upset. Unlikely I think.

I saw Dallas Buyers Club yesterday and man: was I shocked to see him so skinny. He did a incredible job though, very authentic and impressive acting.

I assume TD was filmed after DBC? He's still quite skinny in TD in my opinion, but not as much as in DBC. I wonder how he'll look like in Interstellar

Yes TD was his next project after DBC. I didn't really think DBC was that great a movie really. The script was pretty weak and I don't think the actual story was all that interesting. But both MM and JL had amazing performances. I think the way they played those characters elevated the film into something worth talking about.

I'm a huge sucker for murder mystery dramas. So I finally binge watched this show when not able to sleep.

Gotta say, I don't necessarily see why it's as hyped as it is. However, it's still entertaining and has a good change of pace. I do like the balance of personal lives vs. cases and the feel of literally being told bits of a story with each episode.

The way small town/spooky crime stories tend to go. I'd like to think it's sort of obvious who the Yellow King is. But not sure.

More like Rust having no money and also maybe a little bit blaming Marty for their break up, so Marty should be the one buying the beer to apologize to Rust.

That or they have been in touch since their break up. Even though he quit, I can't see Rust giving up his interest in the case.

Wanna share with explanation? (spoiler tagged, of course)

When it comes to posters, I think this official one exemplifies the 'time is a flat circle' idea really well.

I've been meaning to ask about the "you buy me a beer" line.

Is that an acknowledgment that he knows that Marty doesn't drink anymore, and so Rust can't buy him a beer. I was wondering if it told us that Marty and Rust had been in touch since the 2002 breakup.

Something along the lines of the boys fight and break up, Marty goes dry, Rust and Marty are still in touch so Rust knows this. Therefore the line. It's a clue that they've been in touch during the period that we thought they were apart.

Maybe not in touch the whole time, but at least post-breakup.

Yeah, the show makes you think about whether every line has a different meaning.

I thought of it as a subtle way of Rust saying kinda, I need you also. It's a very Manly thing to say "I'm buying", so in his own way, Rust is humbling himself sorta to Marty without saying it.

True detective is character driven. Its much more of an existential detective drama than your typical whodunit mystery. TD is an allegorical work that that's littered with symbolism and minute details. I don't think the show lends itself well to binge watching, its something that you pore over.

Rust sees his car, that is all. Rust is very poor.
Yup, he was basically saying "you're doing well for yourself."

It's like Twin Peaks minus the David Lynchy-ness and Surreal Humor

Also I'm of the mind that cohle went to the police station seeking penance. Sorta "contemplating his own crucifixion" . He allowed for Marty to get his licks in because he felt he deserved it.

And also minus the huge ensemble cast. Both shows are good because they get you sucked into their world but really there are about as many differences as there are similarities imo. The sense of place going on in TD is definitely top-notch to be fair though.

I can't believe we're already on the countdown to the penultimate episode. It's going to suck to have this TD-sized hole soon

For a show so grounded in reality, with such complex and authentic characters, it's hilarious how a quiet, aging, balding dude like Marty keeps attracting hot girls completely out of his league, not even half his age, and he doesn't even have to lift a finger for it. Of course they couldn't show him having an affair with a normal 30+ year old woman, no it has to be the teenage bombshell who hits on him the minute he steps into the bar. Seriously, WTF? And please let's not pretend that the whole "oh she's the store employee and just wants to help" (complete with product placement) makes it any more believable.

Just really cheap and lazy in comparison to everything else in the show.

As has been said a MILLION times. Dude is a cop.

Cops, firefighters do great with the ladies.

Plus Woody Harrelson is not a bad looking dude. Let's not kid ourselves.

Also, "crazy pussy".

Edit: I think you are forgetting that he knew that girl from years before too. But it was made so obvious I doubt anybody could miss that.

Errr... you do know she wasn't just a random girl he met in a bar, right? He met her in 1995 in the prostitute trailer park, and told her to "do something else".

It's all about confidence.

And a down payment.

Marty is anything but confident. He's just quiet and brooding.

Look I accepted it the first time around, on the basis of "crazy pussy" and all, but when he just steps into a store and then has Miss Louisiana begging him to fuck her in the ass one day later, it's veering into joke territory.

But maybe things really work differently in the US. If so, planesunset.jpg

OK if that is the case I didn't realize that. Whether that makes it any more believable, I'm not sure.

I don't think you know enough women in their late teens, early twenties who specifically go after older gentlemen for a variety of reasons including experience.

Have you been watching the show or did you just want to look for reasons beyond your experiences to drag it?

Young people like to have sex. Should be like that around most of the world.

Yeah I can see it as a sort of hero worship, since Marty pushed her to leave that life.

Yes you got it right. My sole purpose here is obviously just to slam the show and ruin everyone's day. I'll show myself out.

Uglier men than Harrelson get play especially if they have money. Some just get play because an older person is assumed to have their shit together. If they just want someone to fuck with, like the first one we saw, there's an assumption they don't have to worry about it getting serious. But Marty is so unstable and hypocritical that his mistress can't even have another man in her life. Part of the show is to illuminate how toxic Marty's ideas about women are despite trying to portray himself as an upstanding family man.

Not to mention in an earlier episode Rust foreshadows it with "making a down payment." The show loves to come full circle.

these posts, god damn. You're projecting insecurity all over this show

She recognized him from the investigation in 1995, that's why she approached him. She probably saw him in a pretty favorable light with the way he tried to help her. She specifically mentions turning her life around after that. Pay attention

Lol.

I'd add that the people I know in real life that do the best with women and have had affairs with really pretty ones, are generally not the best looking, or richest.
They tend to be tall though. Show is unrealistic cause Marty is a Manlet /jk

Can we stop trying to peg Marty or Rust as the Yellow King? This is not that show.

This isn't a show where there's some twist at the end for the sake of having a twist at the end.

This isn't the show where the character's character is betrayed for pure shock value.

This isn't Dexter, M. Night Shyamalan or any of that bullshit.

This is not that show.

Thankfully.

This is not that show.

except its not a twist, its all there from ep 1.

The killer isn't Marty or Rust. The killer is Marty's daughter. Dora Lang was the ringleader of a group of older women who bullied young girls, and she had enough of it. She's been out there killing other bullies ever since. The latest murder was her way of bringing her father, mother, and Rust back together, so they can have a family reunion orgy based on her sex cult beliefs.

We see Marty and Rust during their most intimate and private moments in their lives. They are genuinely surprised, disturbed and curious on each turn the investigation takes them. We see how they live, alone or otherwise. There is simply no way you can fit a secret satanic life without completely betraying who the characters are, by way of some overwrought senseless conspiracy or split personality.

Rust is obsessed with finding the cult's ringleader because all the missing girls remind him of his daughter, and Dora was found on his daughter's birthday. The police is crooked so he goes off the grid to solve the case by himself. Yes, I know some people can't believe it to be so simple, but the Yellow King is probably some dude we haven't met yet and is tied to the governor in some way. This isn't a story about twists, it's a story about characters.
