Give it a shot, seriously. I remember when the thread appeared on GAF, which was the first time I'd heard about it, and it received almost universal apprehension. Those who watched it slowly realized it was a hidden gem, exemplified by the numerous "you know, this show is actually pretty amazing" articles/reviews after season end. Matt Zoller Seitz thinks it's even better than True Detective...!
IMO, they are too different to compare but complement each other extremely well. I think the writing is one notch below TD, but the performances are right up there, and it has a stylized beauty to it (seriously, it's one of the best looking shows to ever grace TV). It's extremely interested in the psychology of the characters and what it means to be a "normal human being", to have an identity, or what it means to identify (or not) with humanity/society.
