FFX is not a bad place to start. It's a great game for some, but for others, it marked the "downfall" of Final Fantasy. Personally, it's in my top 5.

But yes, please do play FFX before jumping into X-2.

Now, if you want to expand to other titles, I personally would recommend FFVI (best played on the SNES/GBA though) and FFVII

Now if you like FFVI, check out FFIX, which is a love letter to FF games pre FFVII

Now if you like FFVII, jump towards FFVIII (which in my opinion is the best out of the PS1 era)

But if you liked both, then choose your own path.

As for the newer titles if you ever venture into them, go into XIII with a open mind. XIVARR is also a great MMO. XII is also a great game in it's own right.

Then if you want to check out some of the spinoffs, check out Crystal Chronicles. I personally like CC on the GC and Echoes of Time on the DS.

I'm willing to give it another shot someday, but in my experience with the game when it came out, it's one of the few Final Fantasy games I hated... and I've beaten every single one with the exception of V, X-2, XIII-2, LR, and XIV. At best it could be a "decent JRPG" if you look past all the horrible aspects of it. At least it's better than Lost Odyssey... mostly.

Yeah GREAT game. Those old RPGs were rubbish with play mechanics to rival only MS Excel. Sure I have very fond memories of some classic RPGs, but would I put up with that crap today? No.

slow downs mainly. Square did a shoddy job when they ported it to the PS1.

It's tolerable, but if you really want the best experience, SNES or GBA (but some people don't like the audio presentation in the GBA) is the way to go. Or if you have a Wii/WiiU, the VC version.

Yup, getting the ultimate costume (which was funny), beating the ultimate boss, and that battle system man........

The ending was a real good close-up to the entire FFX saga too. Not many times a game can make smile broadly like that when I saw it the first time.

The battle system was one of the things I liked best. And yeah,
I was weeping like a bitch at the end of BOTH games. Though I smiled during one of them through mah tears.

My only complaint about FFX-2? Nobody pointing out LeBlanc's outfit is the fourth Lady Luck outfit. And how she got it so darn early.

Say what you want, but overall RE6 was a good game with a few problems. As far as gameplay mechanics go, it's ridiculously good. Some of the sections of levels have questionable design, but I bought it at release, put over 80 hours into it and never regretted a single second. I even bought the game on PC when it was on sale on Steam.

I can't say the same for FFX -- as far as Final Fantasy games go, of the games I've played there are very few that I would choose to play FFX over.

Hahaha... this is FFX more than any of them, I think. People bitch about FFXIII have a 25 hour tutorial and no HD towns or whatever, but FFX is basically the prototype for it.. I remember running along some cliffs to a beach for a battle of some boss variety and thinking "is this ever going to open up, let me explore the world and figure out where to go next?" And it never really did. Dungeons weren't overly complex from what I recall and the fact that they pulled a "Wind Waker (prior to WW of course)" by flooding the world and having the airship drop you off in spot a, b, or c via menu just... took out a lot of the essence of the series that I played the game for in the first place.

These levels were not that bad and i suck at patformers. The only hard would be the classic symphony one. Rest all were easy peasy if u have practiced in the normal musical levels.
 
I always get a kick out of the replies on any of bluemaximas update thingys in the live area. It's like I'm reading the playstation forums :lol

Im not sure if i follow. FFX is more of the same mechanics they used to have on the rest of FF titles , as far as mechanics is the same of any jrpg till that time when was released. So if you dont like FFX for the "mechanics" pretty much you dont like the genre. If there is another reason then is a different thing and could be more understandable.

RE6 is just messed up from head to toe. The only interesting thing about the title is visual department and action cutscenes, where everything explodes. The rest is just the worst RE til date , i even prefer playing gun survivor before RE6.
So its really funny that you dont like a legendary title and you like the worst iteration of a saga of games.

They're pretty bad if you don't commit the stage and the jumps/etc. to muscle memory. At the end of the 8-bit one with dragons, everything is basically just random pixels... jumping over the oncoming dragons' flames is kind of "jump and hope"... I like precision and not being able to see where my character is at when I need to jump with said precision doesn't work for me.
I think the ones that were pixellated beyond recognition when they zoomed out were the worst. If not for watching YT videos of the stage on a console, I'd have never have gotten through them.
At least I just have to finish up the back to origins levels now... then I can be irritated by the difficulty of getting that unique online trophy and the grind to get 1 million lums and hit level 10.

Then you should've had problems with RE4 and RE5 and RE:R as well, since they all do pretty much the same thing. RE4 has a bit of a horror vibe to it still, but it's not really strong.

The main difference in the two is the genres -- I do not expect an open world to explore with multiple side quests and such in a Resident Evil game. Until FFX, I had never played a FF game that limited your paths and pretty much took out the overworld. Sometimes it took a while (6 hours, for example, to get out of Midgar in FF7 but then you have a map to explore and towns to check out and variety /choice of what to do next.

Newsflash -- just because the masses like something (1) doesn't mean it's actually good and (2) doesn't mean everyone needs to like it. If you recall, I happen to think that Uncharted 2 is the worst of the 4 games in that franchise and everyone else seems to love it for some reason. :P

I never talked about the "mechanics" of FFX, other than saying that the combat system was actually good, alongside the sphere grid.
The main problem that I have with FFX is that it is the first Final Fantasy without a real overworld. You can't fly around in an airship and check out random towns and caves and such. From what I recall, there's not a lot of side content... and most of it is toward the very end of the game when it becomes available. I know Wind Waker came after FFX, but FFX basically suffers from "Wind Waker" Syndrome; the world is a vast ocean with a few points of interest and as such, exploration and overworld are extremely limited and nonexistent. Pick a location from a map and get dropped off somewhere isn't really the same as being able to fly around the world on your own and explore.
 
People can't just appreciate the story of a underwater football star and his dad who's a giant whale.

I don't know about you, but that's a deep story.

RE6 was basically, "Cutscene, the game". At least RE4 and RE5 each has a much more active gameplay to them. I didn't like RE5 since the shift to action instead of horror was very apparent there, but I do like RE4 because--especially when you play harder difficulties--the survivor horror feeling was still there and quite palpable (and that tetris luggage was just so awesome, hahaha)

FFX has plenty of sidequests though, if you chose to pursue them, unlike say, FFXIII where the only sidequests you can pursue are basically just monster hunting.

Also, for me, FFX purported what's basically the finest refinement of JRPG's turn-based formula.

Oh so basicly you dont like FFX becouse of the "world map" ? i get it. but still being a good game even with that being a poor feature. In the case of RE6 is pretty much the worst evolution of RE. And a messed up title as far as mechanics , gameplay, everything so ... you ditch a game in the trash becouse you dont like the world map but you forgive all the horribly decisions made regarding gameplay on RE6 becouse ....is RE . I dont get it. Really. I think you dont like the game (FFX)becouse is fun and cool to be negative about any release and game right now.

Now these are some straight up lies man.

Of all the things to hate on RE6 for (and there are many things) the gameplay mechanics are not one of them, its about the only thing the game did right.

yeah lies...Jake Campaign= running , and running , awful camera doesnt help. tooo much quick time events.
Leon Campaign= the most "playable" campaign of all
Chris Capmaign= Gears of Resident Evil. Another completly different genre. but , thats ok it is fun...No it isnt.
Ada campaign= stealth is broken , almost unplayable.


so yeah. Lies.

Once you're in your 30s, there's no use in "disliking something to be cool and different cause everyone else likes it." But thanks for the insight.

I've disliked FFX since I bought it. on release day back in January 2002. Add it to the list of other beloved games that I honestly don't like or do not hold in the same regard as the masses such as Uncharted 2, Wind Waker, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid 3, etc.

And it's not just cause of the world map. It's because the game was a drastic departure from the formula used in previous games (FF4, FF6, FF7, FF8, FF9). Add in the fact that I hated the story and at least 90% of the party characters (again, the only one I hold any love for is Lulu... Rikku was sometimes tolerable... everyone else not so much. I wanted to like Auron, but in the end I just found that he bugged me. I loathed Yuna from the moment she was introduced and as much as I wanted to like Tidus, he was just.... he didn't click for me in the ways that other main characters in previous games had).

15 hours in, I just found myself realizing that the game wasn't going to get better. I forced myself to the battle with Syn and got wrecked. I put the game down for a year, went back, managed to beat him somehow, traded it and never looked back. Similarly, I don't like Final Fantasy 5 (it's the only mainline game I've never played to completion). Many praise it for it's job system, but I've never liked that gameplay element in my JRPGs... add in the horrible official translation and I just gave up.

As far as RE6 goes? The mechanics take the evolution of the TPS gameplay introduced in RE4 and refine it. Were the vehicle sections good? No. But the core shooting mechanics work and feel right. I can't even count the hours I spent playing mercanies with people and when I actually found people who knew what they were doing? It's a blast. Now if you told me that the deathmatch modes and such of RE6 were great, I wouldn't believe you... but the rest of the game, I liked... finally having a dodge/roll? Amazing. I've heard it's even better co-op, though I haven't played the campaign with anyone, just mercenaries.

Why so many people are disappointed with RE6 is something that's very well documented across the Internet, and this is kind of off-topic (isn't it?) so I guess let's just agree to disagree :P

I just can't wait for March 18. To have FFX and FFX-2 in my Vita... ohhhhhhhhh mannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.

I don't know why anyone takes value from liking what everyone else likes or disliking what everyone else likes. Who cares if a lot of people hate RE6 or Final Fantasy XIII or whatever... if you like it and have fun playing it, great -- that's what matters.

You like Monster Hunter, Japan is crazy about Monster Hunter, I like Japanese games... and yet, I can't stand Monster Hunter. Go figure.
In the end, play what makes you happy. Normally, I try to avoid these arguments cause most of the time it doesn't help anything... but when I see people praising a game I thought was a disappointment, I feel like I should at least offer the counter opinion for people who may be on the fence so they have both perspectives.

Most people I talk to seem to like the new Strider. I think it's pretty average at best and don't have a lot of good to say about it. And in the end, if I can save one person from spending $ on a game and being disappointed/unhappy with it as I was, that's a win for me.

...And have I ever said I liked Monster Hunter? o_O I don't actually. Well... "don't" isn't actually true... more like I am indifferent to it. In fact, MH3 for 3DS was basically my 1st MH game and I barely even played it, hahaha.

It's on my top5, but I totally understand why people draw similarities with XIII. Still, X had more variety (towns, puzzles, more NPCs) and a story that doesn't need you to go to the enciclopedia every 5 minutes

Yes, the latter 8bit levels are crap. Great idea, terrible execution. I only have left 2 stages there and 1 of those Dark Rayman Invasion levels.

I too thought MH sucked till I played it on console. 3DS and PSP MH games are awful, don't be fooled.

Yes. MHU on Wii U is sooo much better than the 3DS version.

I am not so sure actually. I even bought the Circle Pro specifically for it. I guess it just... didn't click? Not to mention that it's ad-hoc only.

The regulars of my 3DS gatherings are all crazy about it though. It is basically all that they are playing when we meet, hahaha.

At this point, the only thing that could really push me over the edge to buy a WiiU is a Fire Emblem game for it. When I get a WiiU I'll get MonHun for sure.

Yes, the latter 8bit levels are crap. Great idea, terrible execution. I only have left 2 stages there and 1 of those Dark Rayman Invasion levels.

Thanks. I love Hiryu, so I changed to this because Strider was releasing... and then I played the game. :(

And it seems that the 8-bit levels are more well done on the other platforms... it's merely the vita's small screen that really makes it insane.

I only have about half of the sea world and all of the mountain world left... thank God.

As far as FFX goes, it's not the worst FF in my book, but it's down there. :P

I wanted to like it... I wanted it to be like Dark Souls boss fights as quests that just kept getting harder. Watching some YT videos, it seemed like I'd like it so I grabbed MHFU for when I picked up my Vita... but it's too slow and there's not enough variety for me... maybe it really is good if you spend the time to get beyond the "startgame", but I just couldn't do it, much like trying to play FFV with Faris's speech file run through a pirate talk translator. :lol

probably not even worth it at this point, just wait for the inevitable PS4 version. then you don't have to buy a shitty console and sell it once you finish G rank like I did.

I actually bought the analog add-on for 3DS to play MH3 too, and that made it 10 times more enjoyable to play. But shortly after I was gifted a Wii U, and then it made no sense to keep playing the 3DS-version
