True Detective - McConaughey/Harrelson crime series - S2 starts June 21st

Many viewers seem to find Beth's attraction and affair with Marty unrealistic. Perhaps these viewers are on to something.
What if she was hired or directed by the mysterious cult to romance Marty? When she invites him over for anal he is really being setup for blackmail. Marty is unable to say no to such an offer and the entire encounter is filmed or photographed by another cult member. The purpose of this blackmail would be to make sure Marty doesn't pursue any further leads. Unfortunately for the cult the Marty's wife finds out about the affair by looking through Marty's phone. The cult never gets an opportunity to blackmail Marty because Marty's wife promptly fucks Rust thus destroying Marty's marriage. The Episode 7 trailer further shows Marty enraged after seeing some sort of video/image that Rust presents to him on a computer. Most people here assume that that the video/image is of Marty's daughter. However the image/video is really Marty fucking Beth in the poop chute.
 
The entire show reminds me of this line from No Country For Old Men:

"You can't stop what's coming, it ain't all waitin' on you. That's vanity."

My gut is telling me that Rust will not be able to get final resolution on the case. Will we as viewers still be satisfied by the end? I believe so.

Hahaha, I was thinking the other day about the nihilism of No Country vs True Detective. Got to see a 35mm screening of No Country last month and it's been in my head ever since.

beth's attraction is purely based on Marty's status which she thinks is heroic, and she considers Marty a powerful guy in terms of historical popularity. its not unrealistic. many women are attracted that way to men where they have an instant attraction to a guy who has achieved something important in their eyes.

Also, Marty "protected" her at a young age. Not strange at all that she might develop that kind of feeling toward him later.
 
I have no issue with Beth falling for Marty as described by the narrative. Young chicks fall for older dudes all the time. Especially if they are heroes. However, not everything should be taken at face value. You guys are laughing at my theory because you are unable to imagine that a sexualized murderous cult would sink to the level of using sex to blackmail an investigator.

I admit, I laughed reading the first couple of sentences, but if she was used as a part of it...I wouldn't be completely shocked.

no. because the writer himself said he is not trying to deceive the audience. the plot is expansive and complicated but if you have been following the show everything is straight forward unlike some other ridiculous shows which come up with bizarre twists.

Wish that was true but I doubt a top-tier director like Fincher would agree to deal with the production schedule of True Detective. Fukunaga directed every episode, which was reportedly a grueling process but I hope the show retains that one director approach because it goes a long way into creating a cohesive vision.

I have this really strong feeling that the scene of the same field with the tree catching fire and burning will be one of the last scenes in the series, if not the final scene. It just feels appropriate - a sense that certain things that happened will happen again and again because there's a pattern to the world, but it doesn't have to specifically mean anything unless we attach meaning to it. Whether the case gets completely solved or not, I can see Cohle driving away, the landscape catching fire, the camera pulling back on the same scene we've seen again and again, flames spreading across the horizon, smoke filling the sky, a song starts playing, and it cuts to the end credits.

So this whole show was really just a remake of Apocalypse Now...
 
Perhaps my favourite TV-drama since The Wire. And I love that there's only two episodes left - it means that we get a compelling story that doesn't linger on for too long.

Oh, and Harrelson and McConaghey should both get nominated. Matthew for the win, but Woody has to get a taste, too. They're amazing in this. Career-best, almost.

The suggestion that ‘True Detective’ is misogynist is jarring — it implies that writer Nic Pizzolatto is sexist and that his characters represent his POV. It implies that the show is celebrating and endorsing the way its male characters — particularly Rust and Marty — treat women badly. And aren’t we smarter than that? Aren’t we beyond this idea that any given work of fiction is a representation of the opinions and beliefs of its author?

I don’t know about you guys, but when I watch ‘True Detective,’ I don’t see a show that’s extolling the virtues of Rust Cohle and Marty Hart. I’m watching a show about two deeply flawed detectives whose terrible treatment, ignorance, and willful misunderstanding of women is meant to reflect that they aren’t that much better than the bad guys they’re chasing after. There have been fan and critic theories that Marty or Rust could be the Yellow King, still at large after all these years, and I think we’re meant to ponder these theories because it’s just a narrow, slippery slope between the bad things they do and what that monster in the woods has been up to. It’s no coincidence that women are the victims of both.
