Did anyone else think Beth was going to be pregnant after Marty took it out on that women saying to use a fucking condom? Thought he was pissed at himself and her at the same time. That's how I first read that, but I guess dirty boxers is all it was.

This is what I was going to say. Can we really blame the show for not fleshing out female characters when nobody outside of the two main characters has received any sort of screen time? There are Marty and Rust, then there is everybody else.

Yeah this is what I don't understand. One show can't have something for everyone. This is just about two guys and their crazy lives.

So, I've been wondering if in fact there isn't some grand conspiracy. Rather, there was systemic abuse in Tuttle's schools. When those were disbanded, some of the abused went and carried out similar atrocities in their own separate lives. One of them, perhaps the lawnmower man, got really into it and has killed several times. That's how you get it all up and down the coast, but also a thread running throughout the decades.

That is, the story is about evil being committed and then being recommitted by those already touched by evil. Repeating everything that's been done, etc.
I like this view

I think of it more as the protection of evil under the guise of an otherwise wholesome organization. When Reverend Theriot mentioned finding those pictures of the kids and the reaction of higher ups, it reminded me of the Sandusky/Penn St situation or child abuse occurring within the Catholic Church. Tuttle, maybe in a desperate attempt to drum up more money for his organization, became wrapped up with some unsavory people. In order to not let it be known who he was associated with behind the scenes, he had to cover up all their dealings. I don't think Tuttle was abusing children or killing women in the woods, but his organization opened up innocent people to some really evil fucks and he stopped the truth from being dragged into the light.

The leader of the cult is Rust from a parallel dimension. The name of the King in Yellow is Hastur....

HASTUR = RUST COHLE

Boom!

yellow king = yellow crown = a full head of hair

marty back then = head of hair = yellow king

marty 2012 = balding = no longer king

rust = short hair = not yellow king

rust 2012 = long flowing tresses = yellow king

Yeah, i mean I really don't see this show throwing a massive twist our way. We can already see where its heading, its just fun watching Rust/Marty get there.

This is probably the greatest television show I have watched. I didn't think I'd say that so soon after Breaking Bad ended, but it's true. Every facet of this show is top notch.

I hope next season will star two female detectives. I nominate both of these ladies:

It was a real missed opportunity not to use this song to end the ep.

If HBO isn't full of idiots it will be in this weeks promo.

I think I realized what I don't like about all the wacky theories now that they've gone from semi-humorous fad in ep 3 to semi-self-parody mainstays, they reveal a inability to accept the show on it's own terms. Why do we need to make up some boogey monster mythos, or labyrinthine mind-fuck?

Whatever, maybe I just found a more obnoxious way of saying "you guys don't appreciate it on as many levels as I do!'

“If you can imagine Marty’s behavior as an expression of weakness … pain—you’d see that it’s not about you.”
—Cohle, to Maggie, Episode Four

True Detective, their show, is obsessed with the way human beings create their own pain, and Nic Pizzolatto is a writer for whom redemption comes in small acts of atonement that arrive late in the day. In weeks past, we’ve indulged ourselves in symbolism and conjecture, but it’s become clear that the truth of the resolution will transcend our theories and hearken back to choices that have been postponed for years. To catch the King in Yellow, Hart and Cohle will have to be more than brilliant—they’ll have to be decisive.

Major spoilers in the article if you haven't seen episode 6.

I'm not sure I agree about the statement on redemption. I don't think there is any in the show, nobody is redeemed so far.

Edit: Oops, double post.

For those who've seen it, how does Hannibal compare to TD?
I think Hannibal is fantastic and well worth watching. It's quite different in focus compared to True Detective, which is much more about the the two detectives and how their lives are affected by their job. Hannibal is more about a smart psychopath messing with those around him and how the psychological aspects of that and the crimes affect one individual. Both very good at what they do. Hannibal is probably my favorite show on network television at the moment.

I think the next episode will set up a redemptive moment for Hart, but Cohle? There's no saving him, and his despair is in knowing that. Guess this ties in with what Maggie says about Marty - how he used to say there was no such thing as forgiveness, only short memories. Marty can forget, Rust cannot.

I think True Detective is actually far and away McConaughey's best performance. He's getting to flex some acting muscle here that even his good movies haven't really capitalized on.

Another outstanding episode. I think Maggie fucking Rust (and that leading to the blowout between Marty and Rust) was something we all saw coming, but that doesn't make actually seeing it any less raw.

Bring on the final act.

I don't know how they can top Rust and Marty for next season. You can't get deeper than Rust, and you can't get shallow than Marty. Both are flawed, distressed individuals with their own addictions and demons. Just to show how good the characters are, I'd be glad as hell if they did a spinoff miniseries that focuses on 4 years of Rust deep undercover working for the feds. The 4 years that were redacted from his file. Sheeeeit.

With that said, Gene Hackman for S2 please.

None of us expected it to go down like that if it did.

Good choices. I think Jessica Chastain would be great, as well.

And/or Julianne Moore.

I swear, I'm not consciously picking gingers.

My choices for season 2:

1 of each.

Male Detective Options

#1 Hugh Laurie
indexfront.jpg

Dark brooding nature fits the overall feel of the show and the character of a detective. He can do an American accent. Been out of the spot light for too long.

#2 Alan Rickman
joel-shouts-20feb14-06.jpg

It is Alan Fucking Rickman. The guy can make preparing a cup of tea interesting.

#3 John Lithgow

Cliffhanger may have been a mediocre movie, but for some reason Lithgow's character always stuck with me. I think this type of role would be great for him. Retiring cop kinda roll.

Female Detective Options

#1 Jessica Chastain
JessicaChastainZeroDarkThirty.jpg

May not be everyone's top pick, but she has this sense of frailty paired with great strength.

#2 Noomi Rapace

Kind of an easy choice. Accent may be a problem, but I think she has the right "tough factor" to be a believable detective.

#3 Milla Jovovich

A wild card since I cannot remember a single movie of her's that I enjoyed. That being said, something just feels right about this choice.

Song doesn't fit the tone of the show.

Jodie Foster - Senior partner, tough, jaded, aware of the corruption and works with it while not approving

Joel Edgerton - Younger partner, ambitious, crooked and willing to be corrupt to get ahead.

Fuck Milla, I replace her with Foster. Duh. Can't believe I forgot about her.

The Tuttle meeting, Maggie's scorched Earth policy, dat ass, Rust and Marty going for a beer and much more. Damned good episode. The little cracks in Rust's cool, detached veneer were the best. His resentment towards Marty was surprising in its normalcy. Busting his ass on a case nobody wants to confront or acknowledge, no wonder he didnt want to type up reports.

Weakest ep of the season for me.

It was a "house keeping" episode for sure. They had to arrange a lot of things from the past and set stuff up for the future.

Possibly this is a externality from the seamless transition 7 years in the future that we all praised. Doing such a jump meant that a ungainly bump was bound to occur somewhere in the plotting.

Maggie's scorched Earth policy, dat ass

Faith tells me that wasn't a stunt ass.

Finished The King in Yellow.

I have a few theories based on the book, but I don't think reading it would spoil anything of the show or vice versa for those of you that are curious about it.
