I think it'd fit with the themes of the show. The daughter slapping her sister after being hit herself. Maggie cheating on Marty after being cheated on. The whole time is a flat circle stuff....Like abuse that happens over and over again.

I can explain all that to you right now, without knowing how the show ends, and without any secret information.

- The antlers are a crown fashioned out of nature. A sign of royalty bestowed upon the sacrificial victims. It's a twisted mix of old pagan traditions and influenced by Madri Gras celebrations brought to the South by the French.

- Black Stars, Carcosa, and the Yellow King are all references to the brand of occult insanity the killer(s) subscribes to. It's no different from serial killers influenced by Lovecraft or satanism. It's an existing occult mythology from old fiction.

- The devil traps are another sign of how the killer(s) are influence by a mix of different cultures and mythologies which exist in the South. In this case it would be voodoo magic and similar sort of traditions.

They don't have to "mean" anything in the end. They're just very obvious icons which represent suppressed cultures and mythologies which exist in the setting, but are generally ignored and shunned by the larger Christian community. Old religions, pagan practices, etc.

I mean, you are right that these things don't have to "mean" anything - since they show is about the journey between Rust and Marty...but what you said does clear some stuff up.

Nic Pizzolatto always said it was a serial killer show. So I really think it's about ONE murderer. Now there is obviously a cult/group involved but like Guy Leonard Francis said: "He's still out there...killing. Big people know about him....Big people!"

If there is a cover-up, there could be a lot of people involved, or just one, very-important person involved (politician, relative of politician, etc.).

Yeah I think there's clearly one "main" killer implied throughout the narrative too. The accounts all match up between different victims - a tall man, large in stature, has facial scarring possibly from burns, looks funny. There are clearly other people involved, but that's the main description we've been getting since the first episode. He's the one who chased a girl through the woods. He approached Dora Lang at one of the revival events. He did terrible things to Billy and made the girl watch.

Terrible article. In large part because it insulates itself from any direct criticism behind a lack of comments section. Nussbaum pours scorn on the show at length for its masculine leanings, but shoots herself in the foot by failing to demonstrate any real understanding of the female characters and instead trots out the same rote ideas of lack of dimension as others have echoed. In large part criticisms that seem ill at odds given the events of episode 6 and the substantive rounding out of Maggie, who she gives short shift.

Even more perplexing is her promotion of 'Top of the Lake' as a seemingly better show. Jane Campions New Zealand Detective drama starring Elizabeth Moss (of Mad Man Peggy fame). A series that despite its magnificent environment, doesn't seem to really know where it's going and meanders at length through several episodes and the antics of many characters with little if any bearing on the main plot. I certainly wouldn't out and out dismiss 'ToTL' (I did watch it all), and I guess there's a degree more 'reality' to it albeit it dances with farfetched upon occasion but it and TD are entirely different beasts, and not really comparable experiences.

Yeah, and this scarred man has to be The Yellow King everyone is talking about. It just fits. But what's weird is that so far, no one showed up with shiny flesh around their jaw. No burns in sight. So I think that this particular reveal will not be about which character it was...But rather, what that character means in the overarching plot. It kind of goes against the usual rules of the whodunit, but then again the show subverts most rules.

This scarred man will be the one thing that will tie everything together and I can't wait to see what he looks like.

What Maggie did was truly awful. I was actually taken back by it. One of the worst things I've seen someone do to another person on television.

Well the Green earred spaghetti monster might very well be a mask. I know LSD and all, but...It just screamed mask to me. It's why I had some doubts about the lawn mower man.
 
I thought Marty had maybe reformed himself a bit after episode 5 but EP 6 put everything back into perspective.

"i couldn't see the answer right in front of me", "my biggest mistake was inatention", yeah right, he can still only look as far as his own nose. And boy can he hold a grudge.

it really wasn't. No matter how much of an asshole Marty was to her what she did wasn't fair to Rust. She could have taken the dude at the bar.

I don't think it's a mask, since looking at the actual book the King in Yellow one of the scenes involved everyone removing a mask and the King in Yellow's mask turned out not to be a mask but his actual face.

Granted, I could be reading way too much into this, however considering the amount of stuff they've taken from that book I think it's a reasonable thing to think.

A dude at the bar would have been forgivable to Marty. Rust isn't.

That's the reason--there's no excuse. Rust reacted (rightfully, IMO) when he realized just what he'd been a part of.

EDIT: I could buy Cage as a serial killer, yeah.

I doubt it is a mask. Enough people has seen his face, they saw it at the revival talking to Dora lang, and the crazy girl MM talked to mentioned his face numerous times too. I'm sure somebody would have mentioned that or hinted at it. Now the Green eared thing could be a mask though.

From the previews for next week
, it looks like MM is in the ninja suit, my theory is that he was snooping around Tuttle's house and that's where he found a video of WH's daughter. The dolls setup and the pictures she got in trouble for a few episodes back lend itself that she saw something or experienced something when she was little. This might be what WH meant when he was talking about how sometimes "the answer is right under your own nose," then it cuts to the scene where the oldest throws away her tiara in the tree (i.e. her innocence). She is obviously sexually active now, which happens to child victims. Anyway, my guess is MM has been working the case for the past few years "off the grid," that's why he is spotted around multiple crime scenes, that's what he has inside his trailer, and that's why he chases down WH. In the previews MM shows WH a video that WH gets pissed at. My guess is this is the video of his daughter, which MM uses to get WH back on his side to finish the job. Especially since he knows WH acts very rash when protecting his women. My guess is MM is close finally to catching the guy with the scars, and could use WH's rashness and help.

To be fair I understand where you were coming from, Marty is an asshole. I just don't think it's right to put someone else in the crossfires just because you want revenge. I just felt awful for Rust. When Matthew McConaughey realized what was going on and was said "get the fuck out" over and over again I felt terrible for him.

I'm not sure about that. I get the feeling that whoever is trussed up at the end will stand for, but not be an owner of, the sort of institutionalized malice that has let all these things happen. Like, the mystery itself will be solved, but the kind of environment that let it fester won't be, and we'll see few answers beyond the immediate who-done-it. More importantly, I don't think Rust will be satisfied by whatever answer is found at the end, because the thing which he sees and takes aim at - and has tracked all these years - is the background noise, the complacence of men who have participated in or let these crimes happen, and it's something that can't be tackled by one man alone.

Yeah that's true. She could have gone with that guy from the bar, but decided to go with Rust to hurt Marty more, pretty despicable.
 
I have no issue with her wanting to fuck someone. Justified.
I'd have no issue if she had desired Rust and decided to finally fuck him. Fair.
I don't feel bad for Rust because he could have just...not done it.
I do have an issue with her fucking Rust specifically to use him for the reason she did. That part, that's disgusting.

dunno if it's something she considered, but Rust is also the only person she knows who Marty can't ruin. if she'd slept with the dude at the bar, that dude gets locked up for like fifteen counts of murder after Marty beats the shit out of him in the holding cell.

i just find it hard to hate her for it - it's a raw deal for Rust, because it's emphasized over and over that Marty is the only one who was ever there for him in that state (and you can see how he feels it, too, the way he reacts when the latter fails to back him up during their first convo with the captain) and she basically puts a wedge into that relationship, even if it was cratering before that. but i saw it as an impulsive thing, and it was good to see a female character use someone instead of being used or used up for once in this show.

I wouldn't say it was justified but it was realistic. I've had the best friends irked girlfriend/fiancee throw themselves at me on a couple of occasions in my life. I've always rebuffed because I don't want to be 'that guy' but I can't say I wasn't tempted ('Heidi..where are you now?'), and I dare say if I'd followed through some truly ugly scenes would of ensued, no doubt one of them involving me getting battered good and proper.

The guy from the bar is something Marty might be able to get over, Rust on the other hand not so much and that's the point. She doesn't want to afford Marty the opportunity to come to terms with events anytime soon. She wants to make the inevitable break up final and lasting, and unfortunately that means throwing her relationship with Rust under the bus.

It's tragic on all accounts because if anything not only does it fracture her relationship with Marty, as well as driving a wedge between him and Rust, but it also destroys the actual relationship of trust that did exist between her & Rust as well.
