So quick question: Can you jump in at any point in the show, or would you strongly advise for someone interested right now in the show to wait for a complete S1 boxset of it?

You absolutely have to catch it from the beginning, if that's what you're asking.
He looks like Jerry Sandusky, lol

I knew he reminded me of someone.

Do not jump in at the middle. Show will only be 8 eps in total.

If those are your two options, definitely wait for the box set.

honestly i'm just gonna suggest that you don't watch it at all and go check out some criminal minds reruns

Tuttle
dropped a rather big hint when he mentioned his charitable work for the police retirement fund or whatever. I'm sure that'll be a big part of why everything is getting swept under the rug.

Ok. Will get the entire series as soon as possible.
Considering how hot McConaughey is right, there probably won't be time in his schedule for a 2nd season right?

It's an Anthology series like AHS. He won't be in t. Same writer, different director.

Surprised there aren't any ass gifs yet. Great episode, once again. It seriously is a fucking PERFECT series for me so far. The wait for the next episode is going to suck...

I interpreted it more as "I'm rich and I bring in a lot of money for you cops, so take it easy." I'm not saying you're wrong, but I don't think it was much of a hint from the writer/director, but more of a negotiating tactic, if you will.

That episode was probably the least of the six, but that means it was only a 8.5 out of 10 instead of the almost perfect episodes we've had before.

From the beginning of the episode it's funny that 2002 was probably near the end of time where a cop could get away with beating the crap out of a couple of college guys for double teaming his high school daughter. If it happened today, the video from one of the kids cell phones (because it wasn't like they'd been processed yet) would be on Reddit within hours.

It was definitely meant to intimidate him.

Good ep.

Marty is a fucking psycho.
MM was particularly good as Rust in this one, dude has been hitting it out of the park and is easily the best part about the show.

Sometimes the on-the-nose direction made me roll my eyes (that little devil shot HAD to be sarcastic or a parody, right?) but otherwise, pretty damn good episode.

Still not in love with this show as much as the majority in this thread though, but i guess at this point i won't change my mind (and that's fine. :P).

This is the show that The Killing should have been and probably wanted to be. True Detective is just on another planet of superiority, though.

Lost only had one episode, maybe two, that even came close to True Detective - Walkabout and The Constant. My problem with Lost is that its legacy was forever marred by the last season/finale. Lost had a horrible "third act". I am certain True Detective Season 1 will not. I much prefer a single season arc with a few really good episodes than a laborious, filler-ridden 6 season format.

I really liked The Killing until it devolved into "What's the red herring of the week?" By the finale of the first season, I had had enough and decided I was done. I could have bailed earlier (and considered it on many occasions), but decided to stick it out to get the resolution. You can understand my enormous disappointment...

I'm normally good with understanding various American accents, but it took me 4 attempts and eventually enabling subtitles to get the "Munchausen by Proxy" line. I had NFI what MM was saying.

This is probably the worst episode of the show, though more for exacerbating the flaws that were already present (terrible female characterization, anvilicious sexual morality, plot points being filled in that were implied way in advance) than for anything new or unexpected.

I think the single biggest problem with this episode is the TV format -- Pizzolato had two great endings he wanted to work around (Rust with the statues in the school last week, Rust and Marty in 2012 this week) and that requirement left him with 55 minutes to fill and only about 20 minutes of material to fill it with. So we get both their split and the last stages of Rust's investigation spelled out in excessive detail, when what we learn from both is all stuff we could predict already.

The nice thing, though, is this episode cleared out pretty much all of the heavy-handed presaging that the story had done early on, and leaves room for the last two episodes to resolve themselves in whatever strange, unexpected way.

Re: that whole long argument about the ending of the murder plot, from tonight's Michelle Monaghan interview:

We will know who the killer is?
Y-y-y-y-yes. Yes. [Laughs.]

Lolz.

That's what I meant, kinda. I was just saying that I don't think they meant it as a smoking gun of sorts.

I think it was a pretty clear indication of why the police were willing to cover things up. His brother being the governor (unless I fever dreamed that detail) also plays in obviously, but the message encoded in that line was "I own you" in the professional sense. I think Rust figured out who did it, killed some of the people involved, and now Marty might have to get rid of Rust to tie up loose ends. That's just my theory though. If Rust knows he killed the only people who knew the details and that him and Marty are the only ones left, this new crime (involving exact details from the old case) could only have been Marty's doing. Assuming he killed some of the people involved (Tuttle for one) the suspect list is pretty damn short.

That's just my wild speculation. It's probably completely wrong.

Please don't use spoiler tags for speculation or stuff which has already aired. It makes it confusing when people want to avoid actual spoilers from previews and interviews. Thanks.

Billy Lee Tuttle is first cousins with the governor Edwin Tuttle. Who knows if he's still the governor though. 17 years is a long time. There's clearly a cover up going on, but I guess the question is why. Is someone specific being protected? Are the Tuttles actually part of the cult bullshit? Or are they just hushing it up and enabling it to avoid drawing unwanted attention to bad things happening under their watch? We'll probably find out soon enough.

I think the biggest problem with the show is that, despite the writing not being any better than more pulpy shows like Breaking Bad (infact, i find it actually less compelling all around) it comes off as almost unbearably self important, to the point of pretentiousness.

The cinematography (when it doesn't go overboard) and, especially, the stellar performances really save it, however, but the underlying problems of the writing are still there and i think they'll be more and more obvious on repeated viewings.

I feel like i'm the only one having such an opinion here, so of course i'm wondering if i'm missing something obvious, but whatever the case, these are just my 2 cents!

Notice that during the fight Marthy breaks the backlight of Rust's truck in 2002. Rust still has not fixed it in 2012.

Yeah, I went back to the fight when I noticed that broken tail light. Damn it Rust, ten fucking years and you still haven't fixed it. No wonder the cops are up his ass.

I usually air on the side of caution when spoiler tagging since I can't keep the policies of each thread straight (the KLK thread frowns on untagged spoilers of recently aired episodes for instance). Assuming that you meant me, I've untagged it.

I think Tuttle (the governor) wanted to keep his base (largely religious, largely tied to his cousin) and was willing to basically collude with him in order to keep the scandal from coming to light. I think one of Tuttel's (the minister) underlings is probably the Yellow King, and Tuttel knew just enough to realize that someone under him is doing the killing and cover it up to save face (whether he knows who it is or not, I don't know)

That Rust is still investigating means that the Yellow King is probably still out there. If not, at the very least, some of the co-conspirators in the coverup might be. I'm thinking that a former student that was abused is probably the Yellow King, having been warped by the experience.

Are we sure they aren't going to go supernatural?

He must have heard a lot of "Do you know why I pulled you over boy?" in the past ten years.

If the show does go supernatural, which I highly doubt, it's going to have to be one hell of a sell.

I wish there were better ways to have a standard spoiler policy too, but it's pretty tough because of how different mediums work and what the various communities are used to.

Edit: Oh and
no Maggie boobs? What is this world coming to?

The weird thought I had during that scene compared to the earlier one in the episode is that Michelle Monahagn's contract probably doesn't include nudity since she is an established actress before this show. Which is why you see the whole event with her clothes on, not even the top off. Kinda makes the scene work though, because it then means that she only needed the bare minimum of involvement from Rust (*giggle*), no kiss/cuddle afterwards.

Pretty sure she was naked in the first couple episodes somewhere.

I thought they were going there a couple of times. The owl in the burnt out church that no one noticed was pretty strange if we're to believe that nothing out of the ordinary is going on. Rust seeing the birds morph into the symbol of The Yellow King was also up there.

As hard as the spoiler policy between threads is for me to follow, I'm sure it's even more difficult for you since you have to enforce those rules. Thanks for doing it though.

She probably didn't want hers to get compared to Daddario's and I don't blame her.

I feel almost the same but I still like the show, and I'll surely rewatch it if I like the ending. Your description is more apt for House of Cards though, now that's a show that definitely thinks too highly of itself.

also the writing in Breaking Bad is great wtf are you talking about?

I like the show too, i just don't think it's a masterpiece on the levels of Wire or Deadwood.

Also i never said BB's writing wasn't great, i said that it's pulpy, or like a Spaghetti western of sort, it can be deep but it also has fun with itself and doesn't come off as pretentious for it.

This guy has way too much close up screen time for someone who we don't even know about. Can't wait for him to get fucked in the last two episodes:

I know, right? And he called Rust a dipshit. What a fucking moron.

Maggie shouldn't have used Rust like that to get back at Marty, he doesn't deserve that.
But I understand why he did it. Damn, she's hot

However, he still feels bad about it: broken tail light means he never forgot about it and he doesn't want to forget about it.

Dammit, I don't want to wait until next week.

Good episode but not as good as the last couple.

So I the thing that Rust said to the girl who killed her kids "you should kill yourself if you get the opportunity" or whatever....got me thinking about the previous week with the guy killing himself after he mentions the Yellow King to Rust.

Maybe it was Rust on the phone. The guy spoke to him about the Yellow King, then Rust convinced him to kill himself...I dunno. It wouldnt make sense to me, but it was a weird thing for him to say...he may like knowing he has that sort of power over people.

Rust just absolutely despises criminals and especially those who've done the things that they've done - child molesting, selling children, etc - and he can't hide it. It's sort of unprofessional but hey, it's Rust. Can't blame him. I'd most likely feel the same way as him. Those people don't deserve to live and they've become insects from the day they started hurting children.

Marty is just a monster now.
That scene of him beating the shit out of those kids was brutal.

I'm glad they dropped the framing story, time to finally kick off the denouement. I'm really interested in seeing where it goes.

+1

I tried to reimagine Maggie's ass last night for a quick fap before bed and I couldn't focus. This will be very helpful.

She was nude in one of the earlier episodes. I think it was just that she scene didn't need her to be nude.
