Weakest episode for me so far. The exchange with Tuttle was great though, and I doubt Rust is the one who killed him, he wouldn't do that, he'd want to get the confession.

Not if he's given up the idea that the justice system will actually serve justice. Back in 2002, maybe he wanted to work the case legitimately. But in 2010 and beyond, he might be dishing it up Batman style.

Oh, totally forgot about this moment for a second. "If you ever get the opportunity, you should kill yourself." That was crazy.

I thought that was genuine and he was being kind.

Don't mean to be a dick, but you're thinking of the actor who played The Greek's middleman, who is in tons of stuff and was really good in NYPD Blue.

You can scroll through your cable guide and still find Gilligan's Island and all sorts of shit, but no NYPD Blue. Seems wrong.

I know! But I didn't remember his character's name and he was assumed to be that for a big part of the season by a lot of characters, so hey. He's a great actor, but the police higher ups, Ben from Veep and him have been wasted on the incredulous, willfully ignorant police chief stereotype. Bring Avon back for the next episode, make him the only character on the show who is not a dick.

I dont watch the previews, this is just me thinking how this show is going.

I think were getting all current day stuff next week

I think marty is still w beth(dat ass)
Were gonna get older versions of the daughters, one is crazy, the other is well adapted

Rust is gonna show marty the storage unit of evidence/theres gonna be someone tied up in there

The 2002 chief is part of the murders somehow

The dudes questioning everyone are in on it somehow.

I think Rust will ask Marty to hide the evidence he has compiled before the new detectives can get a warrant and ruin his work. After Marty
sees the video Rust has
he will jump completely onboard and help in any way.

Don't know if this was posted already, but this is my speculation:

-Marty's daughter was abused as a kid by this group/cult/ring.
Explains:
- The male dolls around the naked barbie doll.
- The spiral drawing in the house, she saw one of the tattoos.
- Her darker personality vs. the younger daughter who seems absolutely normal, even though they essentially had the same upbringing. (A little Naive here, I know people can be different)
- Her desire to try a threesome with those boys.
I like this, it makes sense.

unrelated but I think the white haired cop is on it too.

beth's ass damn.

btw. im not exactly following what's going on this episode. kind of a blur. so last episode they catch the guy. so what's rust doing now asking around questions to all these people?

The pharmacy killer said he knew about the Yellow King and they were still killing. Rust starts looking through old missing persons files and sees that a lot of them have been labeled as 'Filed in Error' or something. At that point he restarted his search.

The pharmacy killer told Rusr they got the wrong guy, that the killer is still out there.

lol are you for real? The guy they caught wasn't the guy and Cohle is trying to find out who the real guy(Yellow King) is.

So, a good episode, but frustrating in that it was mostly confirming what we suspected. I don't think Tuttle is an active participant, but he worries about the reputation of his organization so he covers up shit.

There is only one writer on this show and he is male. This has also been known for weeks...

A bit harsh man, the guy was just asking a fucking question.

What Rust said during the interrogation is sticking out at me. Pretty messed up.

Cohle's compassion at work. It fits with his ethos.

So was I at first, but then toward the end of the scene I forgave him. To me it seemed that he has been in love with her the entire time, but knew she was forbidden. Then, when she made the move on him, he accepted under the pretense that she felt the same towards him. Once they were done and she was rushing out the door and he finds out he was just being used, he was furious.
Yeah, he was leaning away like a man that wants something he knows he is not supposed to have, and then he found out he didn't get what he thought he got. There are no nice people in this show.

Really? I thought right after the deed Rust asked her "what are you doing here?", like she forced him to commit sin or something.

Probably a bit of that too, blaming her for making him feel weak or something.

down payment, man

Rust's 'you should kill yourself' line to the mother who killed her kids was so damn Rust.

Hah, forgot about that downpayment.

Edit: Tuttle should be in the past tense. He wasn't an active participant but covered stuff up.

I have to say Im a little tired of the 'mysterious music and someone slowly saying something really vague'. They did it twice this episode with the girl and the reverend and it just feels like a cheap way of creating the mystery

Really not a fan of the beth storyline

I would be really surprised if Marty's daughters are involved, however there's no way Beth is back only to ruin any semblance Marty had of family life. I bet he and Rust come back(in the present day obviously) and she points the way somehow in these next two episodes. The link she had to the first victim that was investigated is the exact sort of thing this show likes to call back to, so it might pick up for her a little. Same with the spooky slovenly dude on the lawnmower, we'll see him again as well.

Also, the obvious conclusion is that Tuddle is NOT the driving force behind the "Yellow King" operation, at least not anymore. He's dead and shit is still going on.

The guy they caught isn't the end of the line. There's more going on.

wow im stupid lol. i think last week's episode was completely wiped away from memory. been a busy week, cant even remember shit

but yeah i got it now. thanks guys

Ehh... Beth just seemed too neat to me. My problems w/ this ep were I felt that it was basicallly just connecting the dots from past to present- and Beth's storyline is the worst in that regard. We meet her, Marty saves her from sex, and then years later, Marty ruins himself/her with sex. AS A FUCKING DEVIL STATUETTE LOOKS ON. Gah. Just seemed too constructed, especially after the "down payment" line.

This show is so amazing. I don't get why no one I know is watching it no matter how many good things I say about it!

i want you to fuck me in my ass?

i mean I'm not trying to sound like a prude but it seems kind of gratuitous

thought this episode was the weakest so far

I had a girl text me that after 1 date once. She was crazy though and I wanted nothing to do with it.

Exactly. This episode felt like a setup for the last two episodes, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if we never see Beth again (really tempted to look at IMDB, but I don't want to spoil it).

You've got to remember that she grew up as a prostitute, and Marty may have been the first man to actually show concern for her well-being. It's not hard to imagine that she has a fucked up view on sex/romantic relationships, so she's willing to do whatever it takes to see him again. Or, maybe she just really wants to try anal?

I think the point may have been that it was gratuitous. Marty is damaged goods, and so is Beth. Marty cannot resist those crazy young brunettes. Assuming it was intentional of course, and not just gratuitous.

It worked for me. I mean, it was a lot more seamless than the scenes with Rust's almost wife they had a couple of weeks back as they sped through the time immediately after the shootout.

Beth is just a fling, so I'd be really surprised to see her again. The neatness with which they meet and fuck just highlighted the inevitability of Marty's fall.

I consider myself a cynical, highly critical person when it comes to entertainment but some of the things people find to nitpick are just, well, arbitrary.

More power to you, man. I'm not criticizing your right to point out things that bother you. But some of the complains here feel like....getting a juicy steak from a 5 star restaurant but being so put off by the color of the garnish that you can't enjoy the meal.

?

I enjoyed the episode greatly. I just found it weaker than the others by a decent margin. I'm not the only one who had complaints along those lines, either. A show can be really enjoyable and not hit all of the perfect notes all the time with every viewer.

This show is crazy. There's a certain kind of intensity that is just simmering throughout the episodes. Marty is a perpetual cheat who has been upgraded from crazy pussy to crazy ass, and you're just pleading with the show to not let him make the same mistake again and again. The we see people lying through their teeth in the most convincing way possible, having INTENSE sex with each other, shouting at each other, flipping the bird at their partner, breaking tail lights in fights, and it manages to top itself each time. My nerves are frayed, no joke.

And I've go tell you that the way they've handled the transition from 1995 to 2002 is impeccable. There's a clear difference in the look. We've got flip cellphones now. The colors pop in a different way. The cars that populate the city look true to the time, so too does the dress. I can't give this show enough credit for how it's been doing this.

Echoing others in that it was the weakest episode so far imo, but that being said it was still good and it was necessary groundwork for the final two episodes. The dialogue between Rust and Marty was on point. The "You should kill yourself" and "without me there is no you" lines from Rust where great.

i want you to fuck me in my ass?

It's really not. You need to meet some more interesting women.

Pretty much. Who Beth is isn't all that important. What happened was Marty still just couldn't help himself, and fucked up for good this time.

The fact that it was Beth really does just highlight how Marty was never going to manage staying faithful.

In case any one is looking for more reading material, I made a bunch of updates to the content round up near the top of this page. More to come tomorrow as new things get posted.
