i'm absolutely stunned by this series. it's just begging for a proper rewatch once it's done.

my heart tells me that rusty and marty are still bros.

Bros before hoes and hostile detectives and serial killers and drug dealers and possible politically backed cults is my motto.

That moment Rust is in the tank with the prisoner is so awesome. He goes from curious, annoyed and then indignant when he mentions the yellow king. "The fuck you say boy?!"

The fact that they are lying through their teeth in these interrogations makes the whole 'still working together' a highly probable scenario. The way they rigged the scene after Hart kills Ledoux, they could easily stage a fallout and be secretely working together all this time. That would awesome, I hope series gets taken in that direction or at least that they start working together again to finally solve the case, although I don't think it'll ever be solved per se but at least give it some sort of closure.

Fuck, last 3 episodes are going to be such a ride. I'm not sure if I'm ready.

With the police seeming to have some involvement in what's been going on it definitely makes sense for the two of them to split off from each other, particularly to have Cohle work outside of the police institution since Marty seems fairly tied in to it.

Also I love that there is a definitive ending. If the show was forced to be dragged out it could really bring down the quality. Excited to see what they do for season 2.

Could it be some HIGH UP people in the police that are involved here, and Rust and Hart knows about it, they just cant prove it yet.. Thats why Rust have been sneaking around all this time at these crime scenes etc. He is DEEP undercover again, so Deep that he needed to loose his job for it!

I think next season will be a completely new story and this is an Anthology show quite like American Horror Story.

I hope they get another top-tier director for second season. As much as I have liked Fukunaga's direction here, I think with the fact that season 2 will have an all new cast and story it should also have its own personality in terms of direction.

Yeah I think that's the case. All those names with "Made in Error" next to them, it looks like the police aren't looking into missing person reports for young women in the area.

Yeh, thats what I meant. As much as I love these characters I like that their story has a set arc rather than "well, the show got renewed so let's see what else we can think up for Marty and Cohle to do."

There was also the missing girl case in episode 1 where Marty remarked it was weird that there wasn't a full investigation into a case like that.

I think someone on this thread suggested that Jeff Nichols would be a great choice for season 2 and I have to agree. Take Shelter and Mud both show he has an aptitude for intense character studies, and making the geography a distinct character in its own right --two qualities that are pretty integral to True Detective.

Oops, I missed an important sentence in there. Sorry!

Great ep, there's still some painful overwriting but that's fine.

Any particular example(s) you can point out?

Genuinely curious as an aspiring writer myself, struggling with how much to convey (in terms of character reveals - finding the balance between dialogue and action) in some particular scenes without weighing them down too much.

Michael Shannon would probably be part of it too so that would be fucking great

Loving all the theorizing, lots of stuff I could never come up with myself. I've certainly missed watching a new show alongside everyone else

What was it about Cohle's story that the detectives say did'nt add up? I mean yeah we saw him at the crime scene but it seemed they had something else on him. Also what was the school Cohle was exploring at the end?

HBO likes reusing cast members, so him being in Boardwalk Empire would make that doubly likely (assuming there was no scheduling conflict). But yeah, more Michael Shannon is always a good thing.

I don't think its a case of HBO saying 'use these actors' as people getting selected because the show runners and casting directors think they're up to the challenge.

The one Ledoux went to. Cohle was there before talking to the lawnmower guy right when he got called away by Marty back in episode 3. They never investigated the school (which was abandoned) during the original investigation.

Well he did take that "vacation" in the middle of the investigation, and they said nobody in the city he was going to knows who his father is.

They know the story about his father is fiction. They obviously have questions about how Cohle learned of Ledoux's location.

The school is the one they visited in episode three, which was where Rianne Olivier attended before her supposed accidental death that bore some resemblance to the murder that started the series. The school was funded by Reverend Tuttle.

Oh yeah I had'nt realised that was the same school when I was watching. Thanks for the clarification.

But did'nt he find Ledoux by having Marty follow his drug dealer friend?

But how did they find the drug dealer friend? They were way off the books with all of the methods they got the info. That is why it doesnt add up in the files.

But they found the drug dealer friend by having Rust go off the books and take a "leave" to see to his "sick father" while in reality he went deep under cover with a biker gang and robbed a drug house in a housing project causing a shootout with multiple injuries and deaths, with police showing up and possibly getting injured/killed as well. That's how he got Ginger, which lead them to the drug dealer friend.

Yeah, watching Inside Episode 5:
further confirms the speculation regarding at least Cohle has been working on this case undercover the entire time. Especially when Nic mentions how when he's drunk, everything he says is inadmissible in that room.
Good stuff.

That scene was brutal. When I saw that busted looking truck rolling up, my first thought was that some guys were about to jump out and murder Marty's kids on some No Country for Old Men shit. The ominous music probably had something to do with it too.

That inside the episode thing is great, cant believe I didnt notice but they said that there are 2 reasons Cohl asks for beer, one because he is a functioning alcoholic and 2 because once he starts drinking anything he says becomes inadmissible.

Brilliant.

It's great to get the sense that Rust actually hasn't lost it and relegated himself to getting drunk on beer and nihilism in a shitty shack behind a bar until death comes knocking.

you'd think the detectives would know that

The older daughter is definitely being groomed into being a sacrifice.

She's the daughter of Police Detective. The very reason they've been able to get away for as long as they have is because they've concentrated on the great unwashed to supply their victims. Girls and boys from poverty stricken families barely making rent. Killing her would be like killing a cop...the investigation would never end until some one ends up on death row.

Like others have said, I get the feeling someone was watching him at this point.
Nahhh, I'd go with it just being him metaphorically walking deeper into the woods into the jaws of the beast. Look at dem window teeth and black star eyes.

I'd take "framed" as a good inference though.

IGN noted it looked like he was inspecting them as if he were handling precious trophies (I.e his trophies), not sure id put too much stock into that theory though. I imagine this is going to be one of those series that will make more sense once you know the ending and rewatch prior episodes, we could have missed so much :O)

You guys realize Cohle himself said something about this when he asked for the beer, right? He mentioned something about "are you looking to get something you can use in court". Not sure how everyone missed it.

That's probably why they haven't impressed Cohle much.

In line with this the whole exit from the 2012 interrogation scenes (Marty's and especially Cohle's) was so stellar. They nailed the sense that this show is soon to be about much more than the past which is hiding so much from even the best detectives on the force. The final act of this show could be some insane shit depending on how the case proceeds from here.

Looking at it, there definitely appears to be some sort of face. You could be right about it being a metaphor of his investigation/findings.

Yeah once it ends the early episodes will obviously start to make sense. They could also lead more into more theories too.

Yeah, I was just about to post that I thought this was covered in the first episode...doesn't he confirm that none of this can be used in court?
