Yeah I had that same feeling at the time. It seemed more like a reference to saying goodbye to their innocence.

Same. When Marty talked about how it was "all under his eyes the whole time" or something, it made me think it was Rust and he was too occupied to see it.

Makes you think, though, if Rust is innocent, what was he doing in the crime scenes? Still hunting the Yellow King after all these years?

Sorely tempted to not watch the remaining episodes until the final one is shown.

Cornballer, not sure if this is appropriate for your roundup content, but The King in Yellow is free to purchase on Amazon Kindle, if anyone wants to check it out.

I actually didn't like that bit. After all of the nihilistic shit he's been spewing since the pilot, it was hard to believe he'd settle down with a chick for any period of time.

why? Being nihilistic doesn't eliminate ones needs for human connection, company and sexual desires.

Yeah, also. Rust's Nihilism is at odds with himself. Rust is a passionate person, who actually does care despite what he says. So Rust's monologues strike me as a man who is trying to convince himself of something.

So I'm guessing:
1.Marty's daughter is apart of the Yellow King's 'church' or is being groomed to be a sacrfice or something
2. It's obvious tat Rust is still working the case
3.I don't think Rust cheated with Marty's wife(too predictable), I'm guessing he tried to use Marty's daughter in some way
3.The guy with the lawn mower might be the yellow king or another of his followers.
8.Marty and Rust are gonna pair up again to solve the case.
100.evidence from the last 10 years are in Rust's storage.

I think he uses his philosophy as a shield of sorts, for sure. Like you said, he is extremely passionate. I also think he values truth (or his version of it) to a high degree, that he isn't just bullshitting with this stuff.

I'm thinking maybe Rust and Marty's "falling out" is just another "story" they are telling to cover something up, just like the epic shootout in the woods. As in Rust has been investigating things all this time, and Marty is in the know somehow, and in order to cover for Rust to leave the force and go out on his own they came up with some fake altercation to sell it to everyone else.

I think the father in law is going to be involved someway, and maybe that's the reason the older daughter is so messed up. She was drawing sexual images when she was younger. Maybe she saw something and the grandparents house. He also was saying something about "people having no decency anymore" or something to that effect. I can see him sacrificing women.

I like this.

Rust and Marty are BFFs

I like this alot. Marty gets forgotten cause Rust is so engrossing, but LeDoux would not have been found if it weren't for Marty. They work well together, and I think they're both still investigating this case.

I can dig that idea, that the nihilism is a front for his weaknesses. Even if that's true, though, his past and his diatribes (especially in 2012) don't convince me that he can ever participate in the great "man-woman drama" himself for any significant amount of time.

He's not a true nihilist. He's a determinist, "its my programming". He's a man and a man has his needs. If he adhered to all his beliefs he probably wouldnt care to seek the truth further imo.

- Did LeDeoux's Meth buddy hit a grenade tripwire or did he have something on him that Russ shot to make him blow? It didn't look like he stepped on anything.

Yeah when Rust & Marty were overlooking the compound Rust basically called that he figured they'd planted landmines. As soon as Marty shot Ledoux, chubby duder knew he was likely gonna be executed and tried to make a break for it and ended up triggering an Anti-personnel mine by the sound of it (the sort that fire up in the air a few feet and then basically shred the vicinity).

- When Marty started talking about his family and inattention a reason it fell apart, Was super tense- I assumed one of his girls was going to climb up in the tree for that tiara and fall, breaking her neck.

Yeah that was super tense I was similarly worried that one of the daughters would end up breaking their necks or something. Then of course we get that great time transition focusing on the aging tiara returning to the girls with the younger as the cheerleader and the older as girls gone wild.

It's funny how Marty ended his conversation with him about some circle of life.

Agreed on the tree scene. It was triggering some (actual) nightmare dreams I've had regarding the safety of my own children. I was a wreck watching that part.

In the end, I think it was just a foreshadowing of the two girls looking for affection and praise from their parents (the tiara) and how one girl (in the parts we've seen so far) still seems to be in good graces.

God, I'm getting verklempt just thinking about kids and their vulnerabilities. Damnit. Show is too much.

That daughter scene, oddly enough, made me think of the sibling scenes in Malick's Tree of Life. A simple snapshot of childhood cruelty that spoke volumes.

Loved that scene the way it played out and how the transition of time has affected both of Marty's daughters you could tell the blonde girl was messed up and the passage of time being all the proof needed to corroborate the fact. Love how they showed the contrast between both after timeskip in the exact same place where they were playing. The direction in this show is just so good, I can't even...

Amazing episode. I agree with everyone saying Marty and Cohle are still working together on this case. Well, I'm gonna go and rematch the episode.

We need to know more about this Yellow King.

If a simple phone call from him is enough to make a man commit suicide, then he must be a pretty fearsome individual.

Odd that he is so low profile and yet so terrifying to the average goon.

They mentioned that the guy had a family, so I'm sure the yellow king just had to threaten to go after them.

I wonder how big of a role the other detectives are going to play, are they merely a framing device, part of the conspiracy or are they going to help solve the case with Rust and Marty?

I usually avoid speculation in TV threads, but I'm enjoying reading everything in this thread. I think it's because there are so many options available, and I can see a solid reason for nearly every one of them. Except Rust or Marty being the killers and/or being involved in any way, nothing in the show so far leads me to believe that.

It's a testament to writing on the show, where this thread is 90% speculation.

It's been great to bounce ideas and see what others noticed that I missed.

This show is absolutely amazing. Approaching all time favorite level if the last half of the season exceeds what we've seen so far.

Definitely a must buy when it hits blu ray.

Great ep, there's still some painful overwriting but that's fine. Loved the last shot with the black stars on the window, wonder what's that about.

I think they are there more as an opposing force than anything. Rust didn't seemed very impressed with the info they had. Outside of needing official channels to get a legit arrest, I'm not sure purpose they would have.

We've seen both Rust and Marty administer their own brand of justice outside of the law

i'm absolutely stunned by this series. it's just begging for a proper rewatch once it's done.

my heart tells me that rusty and marty are still bros.
