I'm really leaning against this whole thing being Rust's doing. He could have easily found and paid some meth head to "tell" them where Ledoux was holed up and finished the case weeks ago.
That looks more like one of those stick figure branches things, but yeah, that could be considered a spiral I guess.
I like the deeper in the woods symbolism idea. However what I noticed was that there was a distinct shape of a dark star on the window the camera passed through, plus another pattern that suggested a star shape. I think it was to subtley reinforce ledoux's prophetical last words - that he could see that black stars, and that Cohle was in "Carcosa."

Most def... I didn't mind him back in the early 2000's with all his rom-coms but yeah he's one of the best actors I've seen in the last 20 years...
Also thanks Im renting this tomorrow still haven't seen it.

I thought the movie itself was alright. Solid but not something I'd watch again. But the acting from those two was definitely exceptional.

Dallas Buyers Club is one big gut punch, and Matthew legit looks like he's about to die at any second with how much weight he lost. I almost couldn't believe it was him at times. The money itself is heartbreaking, a little biopic-ish standard, but worth watching for his and Jared Leto's riveting performances. My God, Jared Leto too... outstanding.
It definitely seems like the version of the spiral that has been shown a few times in the show.

I got the same impression. I also have a feeling that there's more to what caused Audrey to play with the toys like that than we are let in on. I would be willing to bet that she was molested.

I thought she was one of the girls in the pictures that Cohle dug up while he was trying to find other potential victims. She drowned in a creek and she had a spiral on her back, though it looked different from the one on Dora Lange. Much more crude and hastily drawn on

Yeah, definitely. He had a bunch of beer can people surrounding another beer can person. There's always so much going on in these episodes.

I just looked it up on Wikipedia, Rianne Olivier was the girl that Rust found in the records at the police station. The one they said died by drowning.
Just saw DBC yesterday, it had its issues but MM was stellar. Definitely check out Killer Joe. Not for everyone, but I love it, much moreso than DBC. MM has a smaller part in a great ensemble cast, but I'd argue that his performance in KJ is more powerful than in DBC.
Watch Requiem for a Dream and it might help you appreciate his acting a bit better. I do think it's cool that he's in a pretty successful band and still manages to play these amazing roles.
edit: And it would be interesting to see how sales of his more recent movies have been affected by TD. I know I rented DBC (something I rarely do) the other night just to see his performance.

What I'm trying to figure with all this spiral stuff is... if it's not the people we're been talking about, then how are they connected? How do they all have these spirals? What is the common thread for the 'yellow king', and why was the one victim found to match the lsd in her system with ledoux place or whatever? I'm trying to follow the tendrils, to see if there are any inconsistencies or red herrings we've been seeing for when it is revealed who did it, but there's a lot of shit out there now. It's hard too because of the ever present possibility of the unreliable narrator here...

The first thing I thought of when I saw that was that after the case was closed with the killing of Ledoux, someone went through the records trying to close any possible open cases that might lead back to the investigation and cause it to reopen.

Eh, it wouldn't be bad, but my biggest problem would be a little too much misdirection/not informing the viewer, and it might feel a little too deus ex-y. "hey guys you tried to frame me, but I'm still a cop, and now YOU'RE arrested!!!!"

I would hope that the actual shots we get of the past would be legitimate and not just some crappy set up for them to pull the rug out on us later, especially because we've seen Marty and Rust lie to the new detectives while we're given the actual story. Adding in a third layer would just be a cheap trick.
Not totally sure what you're looking for with the spiral stuff. Just seems to be a mark of the "Yellow King Cult" or whatever you want to call it. That and black stars. Just iconography from their mythos.
The disturbing thing is that it's shown up twice in Marty's house (that have been identified so far). Once with the spiral drawing on the wall, and the other time with the 5-on-1 doll set up. If you did want to take the paranoid conspiracy point of view, you could easily attach some meaning to the look Marty gave the dolls after his girls left, that meaning being, "How the hell did they hear about that?"

Another fantastic episode. It's unbelievable where we started the episode and then where we ended. I love when writers/directors effectively play with time and it's so well done here.
Is it actually a cult of some kind though? Is it a cult that molests little kids? I'm just trying to figure out how all the disparate crimes fit, what their philosophy is, and how the yellow king leads them precisely. There's a lot of fucking weird shit in this case, they've done such a great job making every moment drip with menace and suspicion.

I'm pretty sure he was looking up unsolved missing persons cases. Soon after that scene he asks the 2012 detectives if they've been looking at unsolved cases. Also, Marie Fontenot's case was finally closed as a report made in error. btw, where did that lead? I can't remember what happened after they found the twig lattice in the back shed when they interviewed her uncle.
Yeah, I keep forgetting that we still have nearly half the season left. I'm really hoping this show is going to be lil b-status after the season is over, and we can go back and see all sorts of fucking hints and clues in previous episodes that made no sense before.
Ah, yeah, not much to say at all about the nature of the cult at this point beyond the fact that it "might" exist. I doubt that they'll spend too much time going into specifics though. Most likely it just continues as a framing device much in the way the case has throughout the season.
Just like what you said, ended in "Made in error". Everyone thought she went off with her dad (or was it her mom?) and that Marie was better off that way, so rather than spend resources chasing her down across the entire state/country, they just filed it away, called the missing persons report an error, and assumed the best. The twig lattice in her backyard implies otherwise, and the multitude of Made in Error's was to show just how widespread the cult murders might just be.

I think that at this point it's pretty obvious that there is a cult or some organization of some kind. As to it's purpose? Couldn't even begin to guess.
I think the "cult" kidnaps people and sacrifices them to their "god" under the leadership of a "priest" the "yellow king". I don't think it has anything specificly to do with molesting kids, and part of the problem is we've only seen two victims, both adult females. However, when Rust asks what happened to some kid in episode 1 or 2, the detectives show him the picture of the modern day murder - this seems to suggest that the cult members do in fact groom the victims from a young age.
Granted, I could be completely misremembering shit and talking out of my ass right now.
I'm thinking it's going to be exactly like that and I'm looking forward to watching them all in one sitting in a few weeks. It's going to be glorious.

I think it's Revernd Tuttle, the guy that owns the school. He is the guy that shook Rusts hand in the first episode. He has a high up connection to the police as he's the mayors brother I think.
Seems like someone at the top is covering for him. Rust is just obsessed and following each murder case as a civilian. Probably gets fired when he presses against Tuttle and the establishment.
