This show is still run by the writer. Nic Pizzolatto is the showrunner, creator, and writer. He created the concept, wrote all the scripts, and was on set every day talking to the actors and supervising the shoot.

The reason why there's one director for all the episodes is because Fukunaga is represented by the same agency which represents Nic, and they were put together to try and create the package to pitch to networks. They started making it while there was a bidding war, so this season is actually more like a big budget indie production which got picked up by HBO, rather than a show created and produced from within HBO from the start.
Very interesting, thanks.

Woah, i hope i didn't come off as sympathetic to Marty. He deserves that.. I was just surprised that her wife would go as far as kicking him out of the house without being aware of any specific affair - although she was clearly suspicious.

I had certainly hoped - and was expecting - that his wife would wise up and get out.. or at least issue a real ultimatum. So this what a legitimate surprise for me. And I only used the word psycho because of Rust's terse assessment.. I dont think I would have labeled it anything specific myself.

I don't know I thought the wife's reaction was very reasonable. Denial is a big theme in this show as I've said. Whenever a character is confronted with that their first impulse is to walk away or remove that from there. When Daddario's character showed up, Maggie was unable to deny her husband was having an affair (you can argue she was trying to bring it up before but she was still more or less content to stay with her husband), and she left. I'm not saying she's at fault for anything, or that she is on the same level as Rust or Hart. But it does fit in with that idea of Denial being a theme in this show, and illustrating how characters deal with it.

I don't think it was. About halfway through there's a shot where the camera shoots the night sky and a helicopter flies over and then back down to follow Rust into a house. I think those are two separate cuts edited together.

As for the quality of the episode I wasn't really impressed with it, I thought the first three were better. mathew's fight scenes looked stiff and hokey, like I was watching an 80's cop show where the star just one hits his way out of any situation because fuck you, he's the Fall Guy!
It was confirmed to be one shot

Here are some screencaps of the latest episode, because why not.

God tier.

amazing episode, but one thing that bothered me - rust had been shooting up, freebasing, drinking AND snorting blow yet he seemed coherent and was like a gun-ho rambo but in reality he would be on another fucking planet and barely able to stand (even if he was a junkie previously).
I never saw him shooting up. I think in his circumstances using downer, psychedelic or dissasociative drugs will certainly get him into a state where he's unable to stand.

However even if he had taken one of those type of drugs, combining it with blow or other uppers will balance him back out again.

It's the same way you can get drunk, snort some lines and feel alert again (so you can drink even more).

the dude is already an alcoholic, so let's just write that off for the moment. he wasn't shooting up, but making it look like he was (cayenne pepper and lemon I think he said gives the appearance?) and as for the blow if he's been doing undercover work professionally for the last 4 years he knows his limits, but also knows how to get himself into that "mode' pretty well.

guy is a professional, wouldn't expect him not to know how to do all of this in the span of a weeks time.

I also thought the part where he was in slow motion then did the crank/cocaine was to indicate this. The cocaine user in our watching group said that is pretty much how it would be. But who knows maybe he was cranked up hahahah. I also liked how during the run he had various moment where he acted still out of it a bit. Swinging head and unfocused gaze and all that. Showed a good level of attention to continuity.

As for the show I liked it. Rusty got banged with that bat and my god it looked painful. I also loved how the biker gang was reflected like basically human hunters everyone scoping everyone else. So different from the glitzy Sons of Anarchy. Though I love both shows.

Yea, I mean some thought was put into it like wow there's the spiral in the bramble and they sorta look like people but the overall poster just seems so simple. Like it took the artist 5 minutes to think of a concept and execute. Not that I think complexity or detail matters much for art. But buy that and spend money on a frame and hang on my wall? Nah.

Not crazy about the poster. Something about it looks too...simple. Maybe it's just a style that I don't associate with the show.

Meanwhile, the intro:

I'd rather have one of those instead, minus the credits of course.

Also, is this 2002 Rust?

Speaking of the (awesome) opening credits, there has been at least one shot from all 4 episodes aired so far in it. Stands to reason that there are shots of Ep. 5-8 in there too.

Usually for these Mondo posters they try to use iconic imagery, and I guess the most iconic thing from True Detective so far is those little branch things and the swirl tattoo, but seeing as the actual case itself is kind of ancillary to the character drama it isn't that striking of imagery to sum up the show in a poster.

Probably would have been better to focus on the faces of Rust and Marty somehow, but more difficult to come up with a cool design.

Some variation of this shot from the opening might have been cool:

Eh....I was waiting on a Mondo poster but that seems pretty uninspired to me.

yep. shoulda spent more time crafting something interesting vs sticking with one large collection of one motif of the show. they're also trying to get on the bandwagon a bit too early. it's only been 4 episodes and as hyped as the show is getting people sticking out a uninspired piece for sale to ravenous fans screams "I want your money now and not later".

they usually have good stuff too. usually when a show hits at least second season and they put the time into it.

To be honest, it would probably be best to release stuff after the season is over. We still don't even know the relevance of the crowns and the bramble and the dream catcher things. Some of it could end up just being curveballs. At the end of the day I think I'd want at least some rendition of the characters since that's the focus of the show no matter what ends up happening. Someone could do something really interesting like old/current faces as a way of showing how the show was told in flashbacks.

EDIT: There should be a distinction made between a print and a poster. I had a poster of early days Bjork that I taped on my wall in high school. A $300 limited David Choe print is something that I pay to have framed.

my room looked a bit like Rusts apartment for awhile. then I bought a single framed picture and ruined the entire deal.

Grimsen - if you want to post some vague thoughts on the upcoming episode because you have access, that's fine. Let's just please keep major spoilers out of the thread since none of this is supposed to be out in the wild. Thanks.

Not to mention that he could have prefaced his post a bit better. I'm sure we weren't the only ones to assume he just meant Episode 4 since he didn't say anything like 'So I got to watch Ep 5 early...'

Thanks for deleting the posts. Unfortunately I read some of the spoilers thinking he was just talking about the last episode.

....then again, maybe he just made it all up. Has happened before.

Will do, sorry about that. Couldn't help myself, it was too much of a mindfuck episode. That's all I'll say.

I'll go freeze myself till sunday now.

I know it was an accident and you were excited/intrigued, but if I get spoiled on TD, I'm gonna make what happened to Dora Lange look like a goddamn vacation to Tahiti.

Now that that's said.

*HUG*

No more pre-release tagged spoilers from me, promise. I'll have chewed my fingers off by the time the next episode comes out anyway, so anxious to see more.

Slow day at work this afternoon...up for grabs:

Let me know if anyone else already has variants of these--I know some of you already have the intro avatar-ized, but I think I avoided dups.

Great show but Rust taking leave to go back undercover in another state for however long (days or weeks I can't remember) stretched the limits of my suspension of disbelief.

Watched all four episodes today. This show just oozes quality. Definitely my favorite thing on TV at the moment. I'm kinda sad it's ending so soon but I'm also excited to see what direction they take it in next season.
