Los Angeles police are investigating the death of a 37-year-old motorist after a physical altercation with two LAPD sergeants who were arresting him.

Omar Abrego, 37, was declared dead Aug. 3 about 12 hours after he was arrested by the two gang-unit sergeants, according to officials. The sergeants took Abrego into custody after they spotted him driving fast in South L.A. and nearly striking a pedestrian in a crosswalk, according to the LAPD.

A cause of death has yet to be released pending further tests, according to Los Angeles County coroner's Chief Craig Harvey. The death is being investigated by the LAPD's Force Investigation Division.

Abrego suffered a severe concussion and multiple facial and body contusions in the incident, which also left one of the sergeants with a broken hand.

An initial coroner's report says Abrego was combative and confused with acute cocaine intoxication, Harvey said.
LAPD officials said a community member flagged down the sergeants at about 5:45 p.m Aug. 2 reporting concern about a white vehicle in the area. Soon after, the sergeants saw a white vehicle driving erratically at high speed, just missing a pedestrian, police said.

As the sergeants reached the 6900 block of South Main Street, the man -- later identified as Abrego -- jumped out of the car and attempted to run on foot, police said.

"A physical altercation ensued and the sergeants were able to take the suspect into custody. The suspect sustained a laceration and a rescue ambulance was requested," according to an LAPD statement.

Abrego was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead around 5:10 a.m.

Both sergeants were treated at a hospital after the struggle, one for a broken hand and the other for a knee injury, police said.

The LAPD hasn't released the names of the sergeants.

RIP.

He definitely should've been arrested for driving that recklessly, but beat to death? Seriously? Again?

This isn't setting off any alarm bells for me. Coked-up, ran on foot, was probably tackled to the ground, etc.

Not that people dying is some "OK" thing, but it's going to happen due to the nature of the job.

Beating someone to death doesn't just happen. Unless you really want it to. Be he coked-up or not.

Well if he was that blitzed on coke I guess he could have had a heart-attack; otherwise it sounds like he was straight up beaten to death? Jesus Christ.

We don't have a specific cause of death yet. Someone's head can easily get hit on the way down and kill them despite being unintentional. (This has happened with tazers before.)

Where does it say he was beaten?

Edit: Okay just watched the video and there was a witness saying that.

"A physical altercation ensued and the sergeants were able to take the suspect into custody. The suspect sustained a laceration and a rescue ambulance was requested ...

I think you have to read between the lines here.

Sensationalist title! The report clearly states he only "sustained a laceration" during his arrest. He must have died from injuries sustained in an unrelated and unreported beating just before he was carefully apprehended by the officers.

So he beat the guy so bad he broke his own hand?

Not necessarily - you can fuck your hand up pretty easily if you don't really know how to fight properly. For instance, Jeremy Clarkson broke a finger when he punched Piers Morgan, and that wasn't even that savage of a blow.

Yea I've seen someone's hand get really fucked up from landing a punch. It was worse then the guy who got hit.

The aggressiveness of cops has always angered me. I can see the need to subdue people but they do it with such a disregard that it almost seems gleeful. They slam people as hard as they possibly can to whatever hard surface they find.

"A physical altercation ensued and the sergeants were able to take the suspect into custody. The suspect sustained a laceration and a rescue ambulance was requested,"

What do you think that means? He tripped and fell?

That could easily fit into the cop chasing and tackling him down, followed by a wrestle to subdue him.

Like I said, I hadn't watched the video where a witness said he saw the cop punch the guy.

Honestly this doesn't set off any alarms, a physical altercation can mean any number of things. I can't watch the clip but did the witness say the cops beat the guy even after he was down or that it was a fight and they had to struggle to restrain him or just that "a physical altercation" took place? The all around injuries for all parties involved makes it sound like it was more of a struggle to restrain where the victim smashed his head in the chaos and died from the wound. Not really the cops fault in that case

If more evidence comes out showing it was more of a true beating of a guy who had already been taken down then yes raise hell but for now lets just wait for more info.

Yeah, coked up people are no joke. I used to know a bouncer. About 6'4", strong as an ox and tough as nails. He always wanted at least 2 other guys with him if they needed to remove a dude on coke or speed. They fight like animals and don't give a fuck.

I can see a fight with two cops getting very ugly.

That guy said he saw the cops beating him for 10 minutes. That's a VERY long time to be punching someone without anyone trying to stop it. 10 minutes of getting beating by anyone is just savage. I think that's exagerated a bit. If it's actually true then holy shit.

How do you know it was broken from excessive punching?

A physical altercation that needed to happen because they were doing their jobs.

Witness statement: "They were beating him real bad. Like, you know. Basically he died of the wounds."

edit: Another eye witness: "The officers beat [Abrego] with fists and batons ... the police punched him for 10 minutes"

double edit: I don't think you're going to be hitting someone if you broke your hand before said beating ensued.

So he beat the guy so bad he broke his own hand?

If the guy didn't die they would have charged him with assaulting a police officer.

So glad that I just moved out of LA County. Fuck LAPD. Where I live now, I rarely ever see police...

That could be much worse depending on your new area. Police are not intrinsically a negative force. But they become a problem when not correctly staffed and regulated.

It'd be helpful if this stuff was in the OP, and not in a video. :-/

The adrenaline will mask the pain from the broken hand in the moment- happens all the time in UFC.

I think he was just plain beat to death. An officer said that he had a laceration -- which was why they called EMS, but the laceration was obviously from the beating.

Sure, but people don't normally die from lacerations. There had to be either a severe injury, or a random complication, such as a blood clot, etc.

How do you know it was broken from excessive punching?

You know how when cops kill an unarmed, innocent man in broad daylight their spokespeople say shit like "A man was confronted by police and then an officer involved shooting occured. The man later died."

The cops are saying here and now "A man was confronted by police and then there was a physical altercation. The man later died."

Yes it does. You don't know what you're talking about. One blow to the head can kill someone if they are unlucky. This sounds like a tragic accident, not malice. Police enforcement by nature involves violence, and violence brings with it danger of doing serious damage. I'm not saying this was handled perfectly but come on. Don't demonize these cops.

They were apparently beating on the man for ten minutes.

Witness accounts say they were beating on him for several minutes. That sure sounds like an accident.
And "Police enforcement by nature involves violence"? Wtf? No it fucking doesn't. Not of this magnitude at least.

I don't demonize them, I just go the most logical route when reading LAPD or NYPD these days. Shit is disgusting.

Yes. They accidentally beat him for 10 minutes. And then he died from said beating. Such a tragic accident. Kind of reminds me of that one terrible accident where Rodney King was accidentally beat by a multitude of officers.
