Resident Evil Requiem so far for me. Outstanding game. Due for a new playthrough soon. I think nothing will come close to it, but I will see how I feel after I played Fatal Frame 2, Mouse P.I for Hire, Indiana Jones and Pragmata.

I've never been too much into RE outside of RE4, so my vote goes for CD.

Has fun combat, puzzles that have you thinking and exploration feels rewarding. Pretty cool game.

I haven't finished Pragmata yet (still only a few hours in) but it is a big candidate for my personal GOTY already. I am also looking forward to Dawn of War IV (please be good) and Ace Combat 8 (if it releases this year).

Are we really lacking things to discuss that we're talking about GotY barely 4 months in? At least wait for mid-year for the check-in.
The idea that we have to wait for some arbitrary 'mid-year' milestone to acknowledge greatness is exactly why early-year gems get forgotten or overlooked

RE:9 Requiem but Crimson Desert is VERY close and I am not done with that game yet

Marathon also really surprised me

Overall really good start of the gaming year

It's currently Slay the Spire 2.

Resident Evil Requiem is probably the safe pick, but my GotY is Nioh 3 just by virtue of it being more catered to my gaming taste.

Haven't played any 2026 game.
But so far KCD2 is my favorite game I've played this year.

From what I played so far:

Nioh 3 for me.

Is fun, has a lot of content and brought new things to the series.

RE9 is cool, but the lack of a mercenaries mode annoys me.

Crimson Desert... Well... The good parts are great, but the bad parts are terrible and unfortunately those parts soured the whole game for me.

I'm only 30 hours in with Crimson Desert, so I'm still in the tutorial; do I can't really count it yet. Maybe when I enter the end game in about 400 more hours I'll have a better clue on where to place it.

Right now, Resident Evil requiem is the front runner, and has a huge lead.

Played none of those games in the list, beyond the Marathon server slam thing before it released.

Going through my backlog, so my GOTY from that would be between Everspace 2, Metalwolf Chaos XD & DIRT 3.

Will pick up Crimson Desert Mewgenics and Pragmata likely before the end of the year though.

How do you like Everspace 2? It didn't hook me as i was expecting but maybe when my back catalogue gets smaller i should give it another try.

  • Game Design: Marathon, RE9 and Mewgenics
  • World Building, Scope, Characters and Exploration: Crimon Desert* and Mewgenics ( and RE9 for it's characters), and kinda Marathon
  • Combat: RE9, Marathon and Nioh 3*
  • Graphics and Optimization: RE9, Marathon and Crimson Desert.
So the common games in all of this are Marathon+RE9, so those are my picks.

*: well I have not played this a lot, just a few hours at my friends house, Nioh 3 only played demo.

for me so far it's between Mewgenics and Slay the spire.
Both are extremely deep, complex and addictive gameplay / combat loops.

This year has been a big miss for me in the AAA department.

I'm liking it the more I play it, because it has pretty fun progression, and I'm on my 2nd ship now.

Bear in mind, a big reason I went back to this one is I got a pair of flight sticks, so using those vs a gamepad has been a pretty big upgrade.

Voted Marathon because that's really the only new game I've put considerable time into this year and I do think it's a quality game. I've watched the missus play some of Crimson Desert which looks like fun too but I personally haven't played it yet.

I just voted the one I have played the most. There is still a lot of year left so I don't expect it to be there at the end of the year.

Its pretty tough, Nioh 3 is incomplete without the DLC and NG+ cycles, and Crimson Desert is fun and addictive but has way too many issues to be a GOTY. Like way too many.

Sorry, but I literally do not believe anyone playing CD is not regularly going to find themselves annoyed by some bone-headed design decision in their path!

It's definitely pushing my buttons

Plus I never had to Google so much lol

About 170 hours and nothing in this game bothers me to any significant degree. Too much to love to worry about a few flaws here and there.

80 hours into Crimson Desert and I'm still in awe and want to pour in way more time into it, which is damn rare it happens.

So it's my GOTY so far

There will have to be something very special to top it off for the rest of the year

Never tried it with a flightstick, though. Sounds fun.

Believe it or not, Pokemon Pokopia.

I'm kinda stunned by that. I rarely like games like that and I put 40+ hours into it, beat the campaign, and was kinda sad when it was over.

It also took my attention away from Crimson Desert. It's not what I expected at all!

I don't think it'll be my game of the year, though...we'll see....

  • Game Design: Marathon, RE9 and Mewgenics
  • World Building, Scope, Characters and Exploration: Crimon Desert* and Mewgenics ( and RE9 for it's characters)
  • Combat: RE9, Marathon and Nioh 3*
  • Graphics and Optimization: RE9, Marathon and Crimson Desert.
So the common game in all of this is RE9, so that's my pick. It's not the best RE but it's still a fantastic game.

Game design for RE9?

Maybe Nioh 3 if the DLC really brings the heat. Without DLC it feels kind of mediocre.

Best things I have played this year came out at least a year prior. Hoping Fable knocks my socks off this year and Forza Horizon 6 somehow takes me back to the joys of FH3. Phantom Blade Zero, Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement, Control Resonant, and Silent Hill: Townfall are also contenders.
